  5. Donald Trump’s criminal conviction presents a remarkable collection of historic firsts. He’s the first former or serving US president to be found guilty of a crime. He’s the first presumptive major-party nominee to become a convicted felon as well. While Trump plans his appeal in the hush-money case, and awaits a sentence on 11 July that could in theory include prison time and a hefty fine, it’s not too early to consider the political fallout. That will be difficult, however, given this has never happened before. “We often look to history to find some kind of hint of what’s going to happen,” says Jeffrey Engel, director of the Center for Presidential History at Southern Methodist University. “But there is nothing in the record that comes even close to this.” Trump secured the Republican presidential nomination earlier this year and is scheduled to be crowned at the party's convention just days after his sentencing. LIVE UPDATES: Follow the reaction to verdict Polls indicate he is in a statistical dead heat with President Joe Biden and maintains a slight edge in many key swing states that will decide the election. But those surveys also provide evidence that this conviction might change all of that. In exit polls conducted during the Republican primaries this winter, double-digit numbers of voters said that they would not vote for the former president if he were convicted of a felony. An April survey by Ipsos and ABC News found that 16% of those backing Trump would reconsider their support in such a situation. Those were hypothetical convictions, however. And at the time he was facing four criminal cases, including charges related to an alleged conspiracy to overturn the result of the 2020 election and his handling of classified documents once leaving the White House. Now those voters can make their judgement based on a real conviction. "The real verdict is going to be [on] 5 November, by the people," Trump said, moments after leaving the courtroom. Doug Schoen, a pollster who worked with Democratic President Bill Clinton and independent New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, says American voters may feel less strongly about the hush-money case by then because it relates to events that took place eight years ago. “While it’s not a great thing to be convicted of a crime, what voters will be thinking about in November is inflation, the southern border, competition with China and Russia and the money that is being spent on Israel and Ukraine,” he said. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cnll59r891xo
  6. Our newest spy photos of the 2025 Ford Expedition confirm new interior and exterior styling for the full-size SUV. Along with new headlights and taillights, the spy photos appear to confirm rumors of a new split tailgate similar to the BMW X5. The photos also reveal 24-inch wheels, which would be a first for the Expedition. Ford's full-size SUV has been around in its current form dating back to 2018. Since it hasn't been updated since a mid-cycle refresh in 2022, the Blue Oval brand has decided 2025 is high time for the Expedition to receive its next comprehensive overhaul. Our spy photographers caught sight of a heavily camouflaged Expedition back in March, but now most of that camo has been stripped away and we've gotten our first good look at the refreshed SUV. The 2025 SUV was caught driving on a set of 24-inch wheels, marking the first time the Expedition has been offered on such a large wheel. The front fascia is all new and features a simplified look. New, sleek headlights border a redesigned grille. The new headlights continue to be wrapped by C-shaped running lights, though they're now split between two housings instead of being in one unit as on the older vehicle. Our most recent round of spy photos also fully reveals the updated taillights. The new units appear taller than the old lights. Rather than the previous version that cut sharply into the Expedition's body, the new lights look to be skinnier. The big news at the back of the Expedition is the split tailgate. There's still no confirmation, but keen eyes will make out a hard crease beneath the mule's camouflage that seems to indicate a split-gate design. If the rumors prove true, the Expedition would join SUVs such as the BMW X5 and Land Rover Range Rover with similar designs. Inside the Expedition, pictures from our spy photographer confirm the addition of a huge 48.0-inch display from the Lincoln Nautilus spanning the dashboard. As with the Nautilus, we don't expect the top display to be a touchscreen. It will instead be controlled through the smaller 11.1-inch infotainment touchscreen mounted on the center of the dash. As for the things our photographers can't see, we expect the Expedition to continue with the twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 it has now. The base models produce 380 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque, but upgrading to the Limited increases those figures to 400 horsepower and 480 pound-feet. There's also the possibility that the Expedition lineup could add a hybrid powertrain, likely in the form of the 430-hp hybrid V-6 found in the 2024 F-150. Although no firm reveal date has been announced, we expect to see the 2025 Expedition later this year. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60961078/2025-ford-expedition-spy-photos-new-look/

  8. The copepods, in addition to being the world’s most numerous crustacean, may also in fact be the world’s most populous multi-celled organism. Found in fresh and salt water worldwide, the roughly 12,000 species are key participants in all of the ecosystems they inhabit. Most are vase-shaped creatures only several millimeters long. Moving through the water by means of paddle-like appendages, they ravenously hunt down tinier organisms such as bacteria and algae, and are in turn food for organisms as diverse as fish fry and baleen whales. Some are even parasitic. Their numbers are such that divers often hear a crackling sound around them as millons of copepods move through the current. The bristlemouths, or lightfishes, are considered the most numerous fish on the planet, exceeding even the famously plentiful herring in numbers, and are also the most numerous vertebrate, period. They comprise the family Gonostomatidae, which contains over 30 species. Bristlemouths are deep sea fishes, and, as befitting their pitch-black environs, boast rows of light-emitting organs called photophores along their sides. These monstrous little creatures form a key component of the ocean food web. Their ubiquity contrasts with their fragility: bristlemouths brought to the surface by deep-sea trawling are often damaged. Though perfectly suited to the ocean deep, their delicate black or translucent skins are no match for the abrasions and pressures changes sustained during capture. Just be glad the little suckers are aquatic...the oral "bristles" that give them their name look kind of stabby to me. https://www.britannica.com/list/abundant-animals-the-most-numerous-organisms-in-the-world
  9. Football's world governing body Fifa has been warned players are willing to go on strike if they continue to be overworked. Professional Footballers’ Association chief executive Maheta Molango believes players are now at breaking point. The PFA has been calling for action to alter the congested football calendar, especially with the expanded 32-team Club World Cup proposed for next summer. "I can tell you a situation not even 10 days ago where I went to a dressing room directly affected and I said: 'I’m happy to be here and bark a bit but ultimately it’s down to you. How far would you like to go?" said Molango, speaking at the PFA and world players' union Fifpro’s end-of-season review of player workload and recovery. "Some of them said: 'I’m not having it, we may as well strike.' Some said: 'what’s the point? Yes I’m a millionaire but I don’t even have time to spend the money'. "It’s not even the union who has said it, it has been Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola. We have reached a point where we cannot discount any action." The PFA has threatened legal action and has been exploring options to do that over the growing number of games in the football calendar. In conjunction with the PFA, a letter was sent to Fifa in May by Fifpro and the World Leagues Association (WLA) - which includes the Premier League - threatening legal action if it continues with plans to host a 32-team Club World Cup at the end of next season. In a letter addressed to Fifa president Gianni Infantino and general secretary Mattias Grafstrom, seen by BBC Sport, Fifpro and the World Leagues Association say if Fifa extends its own competitions then it should alter others. It adds that "imposing the burden of adaptation on national leagues and players is inherently abusive" and is "jeopardising national leagues and affecting the health and wellbeing of players". However, BBC Sport understands Fifa believes it has taken into account player welfare with their scheduling programme Molango added: "Some of the changes in England with the domestic calendar is forced by what Fifa and Uefa have done. What has happened, even further confirmation something has to be done but also that it’s not affecting just the top players. "We will always try to exhaust all diplomatic avenues, we have sent a letter, we have received an answer but unfortunately time is against us. "Sometimes between grown up people, despite trying very hard to find solutions you need a third party to decide, maybe an arbitrator or a tribunal." A study focused on young players warned how much stress their bodies are under and highlighted the number of minutes Real Madrid and England’s Jude Bellingham has played before he is 21. The midfielder, still just 20, has played 18,486 minutes in his career, compared to the 3,929 David Beckham played and 6,987 minutes Frank Lampard played at the same age. Fifpro's Europe president David Terrier also warned players were burnt out, physically and mentally. As part of the review of this season a survey of players showed over 50% of respondents said they had been played while carrying an injury. "There is an emergency - we are in danger," said Terrier. "Players have gone beyond the limit and the international timetable is full to the brim." Infantino addressed the issue of the football calendar with members associations at a Fifa congress earlier this month. "Fifa is organising around 1% of the games of the top clubs in the world. 98-99% of the matches are organised by the different leagues, associations, confederations," he said. "Fifa is financing football all over the world. The revenues that we generate are not just going to a few clubs in one country, the revenues that we generate are going to 211 countries all over the world. "Our mission is to organise events and competitions, and to develop football around the world because 70% of the Member Associations of Fifa would have no football without the resources coming directly from Fifa." https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/c2jjmn7ex4vo
  10. A New York jury’s guilty verdict against Donald Trump may have shocked the general public – but some who watched the case closely weren’t surprised. With the burden of proof on prosecutors, the case was Trump’s to lose. But his team’s lack of a counter-narrative and a flawed strategy to undercut the case’s weaknesses stymied the defence, lawyers and former prosecutors told the BBC. And before they even walked into court, one factor already had set up a tough battle. “The single biggest problem that the defence had in this case,” said Mitchell Epner, a New York civil litigator, “was that Donald Trump was their client.” A lack of narrative To convict Trump, the jury had to be certain he falsified his business records, and that he did so intending to conceal or commit a second crime. LIVE UPDATES: Follow reaction to verdict The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office’s case went like this: With Trump’s approval, his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, paid adult film star Stormy Daniels $130,000 to stay silent about an alleged sexual encounter so as not to derail Trump’s 2016 campaign. Trump then approved a fraudulent scheme to disguise the reimbursement to Cohen as legal expenses to hide the hush money. In doing so, he ran afoul of election rules, prosecutors said, which amounted to “election fraud, pure and simple.” The prosecution then called 20 witnesses and offered scores of crucial documents, including cheques to Cohen bearing Trump’s signature. Trump pleaded not guilty to the 34 counts of falsifying business records. But “the defence never had a story that the jury could accept,” said John Moscow, who spent 30 years working for the Manhattan DA. While they did not have to disprove the prosecution’s case, giving the jury a plausible reason behind Trump’s reimbursement to Cohen, for example, would have helped, experts said. “We were prepared for a guilty verdict,” Trump’s attorney Todd Blanche told CNN in a post-verdict interview. “In our view, we were fighting to win the case, of course. But hung jury would have been as close to a win as we could have gotten.” Asked by CNN’s Kaitlan Collins if he or Trump had been in charge of the defence strategy, Mr Blanche replied, “it was both of us.” “We were on the same page about strategy and about what we should be doing and not doing,” he said, calling the experience of working with Trump “challenging and rewarding.” During his final argument, Mr Blanche provided an alternative explanation for the fraudulent documents: that they were payments for actual work Michael Cohen did in 2017, and therefore recording them as legal expenses was not fraud. The defence also argued that Trump paid Ms Daniels only to protect his family, not to defraud voters, but then the team never developed that argument, Mr Epner said. “They never picked a lane, and because Donald Trump closed off every lane that could have been reasonably been picked,” said Mr Epner. “They tried to throw dust in the air and make the jurors confused.” Missing the key point The prosecution used meticulous documentation to show falsified business records, but the evidence that Trump actually intended to commit or conceal that all-important second crime was “thin to nonexistent”, Randall Eliason, a professor at George Washington University Law School, told the BBC. Trump’s team did not focus on hammering this weakness, though in his summation, Mr Blanche gave the jury a list of reasons for reasonable doubt. Instead, they argued that the central events of the case never happened, or that witnesses had lied. But the jury may have found these claims were not supported by later evidence and testimony. Mr Eliason said a more effective defence would have been: “Assume for the sake of argument all of this happened. The sex happened, the hush-money happened, and Trump knew about it. Fine. That’s not what the charges are. What’s the evidence of Trump’s actual intent and knowledge? That’s where the case falls short.’” In Trump lawyer Susan Necheles’ cross-examination of Ms Daniels, she sought to portray the actress as a liar wanting money and fame for her story. “It’s a surprise to no one that there was most likely a lot of pressure from the client to paint certain people as liars,” said Anna Cominsky, a professor at New York Law School. “That’s not necessarily the best defence strategy. Stormy Daniels didn’t have to be a liar for [the defence] to win.” The Cohen factor The defence’s best chance at winning was discrediting Cohen, a star witness. Cohen certainly created plenty of ammunition over the years: guilty pleas for lying to Congress and other crimes, endless public statements bashing his former boss, and questions about whether he had lied to a judge. Mr Blanche hammered these points. In his closing argument, he called Cohen the “GLOAT” - the “Greatest Liar of All Time”. During the trial itself, he cast serious doubt on Cohen’s testimony that he had called Trump – who was using a bodyguard’s phone - about the hush money on 24 October 2016. “I thought that was a huge win for them, potentially catching him in a flat out lie or misremembering,” Ms Cominsky said. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c288wpj1glyo

  14. Students protesting against the war in Gaza have barricaded themselves inside a university building. The protesters had occupied an area outside of Newcastle University but have since moved inside the Armstrong Building. A number of police officers were at the scene on Wednesday. The university said the occupation was being treated as trespass and "those involved would face disciplinary action". Northumbria Police said it was "liaising with all relevant parties". A spokesperson said: "Our over-arching priority is to ensure the safety of everyone in attendance, including the protesters, members of the public and our officers." 'Two months' About 50 people have occupied the building in Queen Victoria Road, which houses a number of subjects, while a group of about 100 gathered outside the campus. The Newcastle Coalition Apartheid Off Campus group said: "After four weeks of peaceful protest we've escalated our action today by taking the joint decision to occupy the Armstrong Building at Newcastle University." The protesters have called on the university to cut ties with defence companies and Israeli universities, and for it to call for an "immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire in Gaza". A spokesperson, who did not wish to be named, said people had "barricaded" themselves into the building because "our demands have not been met", and added protesters were "prepared to stay here for as long as two months". He claimed protestors had "already seen security become violent" - claims which were refuted by Newcastle University. The protestors also denied their use of masks on university grounds would intimidate Jewish students. "If any student is feeling intimidation we want to adjust that and we want to do some outreach for them," the spokesperson said. The Jewish Society at Newcastle University and the Union of Jewish Students have been contacted for comment. 'Unacceptable behaviour' Newcastle University said its security team was "dealing with the situation" with the assistance of police. "While we respect students’ rights to peaceful protest, unauthorised occupation of university property is trespass," a spokesperson said. "We wish to be clear that this behaviour is unacceptable and those involved could face disciplinary action." The university added it does not "tolerate the use of threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour that causes, or is likely to cause, distress" The protest is one of a number of pro-Palestinian demonstrations taking place at universities around the UK, including Manchester, Leeds, and Goldsmiths in London. They followed on from similar protests in the US, where more than 1,000 people have been arrested during demonstrations. Follow BBC Newcastle on X (formerly Twitter), Facebook and Instagram. 15. Subaru continues to expand the WRX lineup in lieu of a full STI model with the 2025 WRX tS. The tS has adaptable dampers that have three settings, as well as stronger Brembo brakes. The 2025 Subaru WRX tS will become available early next year. Subaru expanded the WRX lineup for 2024 with the new manual-only TR model, which featured a series of upgrades including brakes, stiffer springs, retuned steering, and front Recaro bucket seats. Now Subaru is adding another special performance model with the 2025 WRX tS. That moniker stands for “tuned by STI,” and the latest WRX variant gains a new suspension tweaked by the STI performance division, along with a new digital gauge cluster. The headlining update is the new electronically controlled dampers, which have three distinct settings: Comfort, Normal, and Sport. This setup was previously only offered on the automatic-only WRX GT, but the tS now pairs the adjustable dampers with the six-speed manual gearbox. The tS also gains a high-performance Brembo brake system, composed of six-piston front calipers, two-piston rear calipers, and larger pads and rotors. Subaru touts improved stopping power, more pedal feel, and better resistance to fading Visually, the tS has its side-view mirrors, shark-fin antenna, and rear spoiler painted in Crystal Black Silica, while the brake calipers are finished in gold. A tS badge adorns the trunk, and the special edition rides on 19-inch wheels painted in satin gray. The wheels are shod in 245/35 Bridgestone Potenza S007 tires as standard. The tS also gets an upgraded cabin thanks to a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, which replaces the traditional gauges. This means the driver can now view a map and route guidance without needing to look over at the main screen, which is the larger 11.6-inch unit standard on all but the base WRX. Black synthetic suede Recaro bucket seats with eight-way power adjustments sit up front, and blue accents are spread throughout the cabin, including on the seat bolsters, steering wheel, door panels, and shifter. The start button sports an STI logo, while “WRX tS” is seen embossed on the front seat headrests and the floor mats. Subaru removed the moonroof to save weight and provide extra space for drivers wearing helmets. The turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four under the hood is unchanged for the tS, meaning a total output of 271 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, sent to all four wheels. The 2025 Subaru WRX tS will hit dealerships early next year, with pricing being announced later in 2024. While the 2024 WRX starts at $33,855, the TR model costs $42,775 and the GT goes for $45,335, so the tS will undoubtedly be over the $40K mark. https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a60941762/2025-subaru-wrx-ts-details/
17. Mammals can do amazing things! This list will answer your questions about flying ones, venomous ones, really fast ones, and smelly ones. Earlier versions of these questions and answers first appeared in the second edition of The Handy Answer Book for Kids (and Parents) by Gina Misiroglu (2010). Mammals are a class of animal. They have certain traits that distinguish them from animals in other classes, such as fish, reptiles, and amphibians. All mammals share two characteristics: they all feed their young with mammary gland milk, and they all have hair. Almost all of them are warm-blooded, which means they keep the inside of their bodies at a constant temperature. They do this by generating their own heat when they are in a cooler environment and by cooling themselves when they are in a hotter environment. Unlike reptiles, which sit in sunlight to regulate their body temperature, mammals wake up and are ready to go! In general, mammals spend much more time raising and training their young than other animals do. Some examples of mammals include apes, bats, lions, mice, moose, aardvarks, beavers, elephants, gorillas, pandas, hamsters, dogs, cats, horses, whales, and dolphins. Humans, as primates, are mammals too. There are three types of mammals: placental mammals, monotremes, and marsupials. Placental mammals are those whose young are born live and at a relatively advanced stage. Before birth, the young are nourished through a placenta, which is a specialized embryonic organ that is attached to the mother’s uterus and delivers oxygen and nutrients to growing young. Most mammals are placental mammals, including cats, dogs, horses, and humans. The monotremes are egg-laying mammals. These include the echidnas (spiny anteaters) and the duck-billed platypus. Marsupials give birth to their young in an immature state, and most female marsupials have pouches in which to carry and nurse their young. Some marsupials include the koala, kangaroo, and the numbat. Some mammals, such as cows, horses, and pandas, are plant-eaters (herbivores). Others, including tigers, lions, and whales, are meat-eaters (carnivores). Other mammals, including bears, eat a combination of plants and meat (omnivores). https://www.britannica.com/list/7-questions-about-mammals-answered
  18. Emma Hayes sits down in New York City's Bryant Park with an iced coffee, basking in a new glow. In her first full week as head coach of the United States women's national team, the 47-year-old looks relaxed, re-energised and ready for a new challenge. "I needed this more than I realised," she said with a smile that was lacking at times in her final season as Chelsea boss. She may be almost 3,500 miles from London, but Hayes already looks right at home as she recalls the moment she was offered the job she always dreamed of. "I was sat at my kitchen table, my son Harry was running around and one of my best friends from the US - a woman called Lisa Cole, I coached with her for 25 years - was sat on my sofa. "My phone buzzed from my agent and said 'the US want to offer you the job' and I looked at Lisa and said 'you won’t believe the text I just got'. "She jumped out of her chair as an American and she was like 'you’re the one who’s going to change it'. "I was stunned for a couple of days that's for sure. It took a little bit to sink in and maybe only now I am in the job it has sunk in. I’ve got to do the one job I wanted to do more than anything else Just a few days after Chelsea wrapped up a fifth successive Women's Super League title, Hayes arrived in the Big Apple to kickstart her new career. She spent time with US broadcasters, as well as an appearance on the Today Show, where she met Hollywood star Chris Pratt., external "I have never had my hair brushed so much," she joked when asked if she is ready for the media whirlwind that comes with the job. While Hayes said the US aren't feared by other teams like they once were, she still thinks managing the Stars and Stripes is the biggest job in women's football. "I don’t care what anyone says, it really is," Hayes said. "For me, it's a little bit like Brazil in the men's game. Historically what this team has stood for, what they have advocated for, what they have represented as women not just in this country but to the women's game worldwide. "It's fitting for me to be with them and vice versa. I think we are coming together at the right time." In 2023, the USA had their worst performance at a Women's World Cup as they were knocked out by Sweden in the last 16. And they have since fallen to fourth in the world rankings - their lowest ever position. "I’m not focused on rankings, that’s something I can't control," Hayes said. "The fact there isn't a Nations League here, getting to the top of the rankings will be very difficult for USA. "I'm focused on building something again. It's building trust, it's building relationships. They are my biggest priorities." https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/cpddyld29p3o
  19. Spain’s Congress has approved the government’s contentious Catalan amnesty law, which has now overcome its final parliamentary hurdle ahead of its implementation. The law seeks to withdraw pending legal action against Catalan nationalists for separatist activities, including a 2017 referendum and failed independence bid. The law received the backing of a narrow majority, with 177 lawmakers voting in favour and 172 voting against. The amnesty law has spent six months in parliament since the Socialist Party (PSOE) of the prime minister, Pedro Sánchez, presented it. It was approved in a preliminary congressional vote in March, before going to the opposition-controlled Senate, which delayed the bill’s passage but was unable to block it altogether. Once the law is published in the official gazette, judges will have two months in which to apply it. It could still face legal appeals but they are not expected to hinder its implementation. The amnesty is expected to benefit nearly 400 Catalan nationalists who have been facing legal action since November 2011. Many of them were involved in the organisation of an independence referendum in 2017 which was deemed illegal. Police who have been facing prosecution for attacking voters during the referendum will also benefit from the law. However, the most high-profile and controversial beneficiary is Carles Puigdemont, the former president of Catalonia who led the 2017 secession drive before going into self-exile in Belgium, where he has resided ever since while evading extradition. Several other pro-independence politicians also left the country. Mr Puigdemont’s Together for Catalonia (JxCat) party and the Catalan Republican Left (ERC) demanded the amnesty from Mr Sánchez in exchange for their parliamentary support for his coalition government. Mr Puigdemont has said he intends to return to Spain for an investiture vote in the region’s parliament, which is likely to take place in June. He ran as the lead candidate for JxCat in a recent Catalan election, coming second to the Catalan Socialist Party (PSC). Although the former regional president has said he intends to form a government, he does not appear to have enough support to do so. “This is not clemency, it is a necessary redress. Today we have won a battle, but the conflict isn’t over,” said Miriam Nogueras of JxCat party. The PSOE and their coalition partner, Sumar, voted in favour of the law, along with JxCat, ERC, the pro-independence Basque EH Bildu coalition, the Basque Nationalist Party (PNV), the Galician Nationalist Bloc (BNG) and the far-left Podemos. The conservative People’s Party (PP) and the far-right Vox voted against it, along with conservatives from Navarre and the Canary Islands. In a tense and often vitriolic parliamentary session, the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, said the amnesty represented “political corruption”. The opposition has argued that the law gives preferential treatment to Catalans and that Mr Sánchez only presented it in order to ensure his own political survival. Artemi Rallo, of the PSOE, said that the law, and a government pardon of nine jailed independence leaders in 2022, had “normalised politics in Catalonia.” https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cv229gn317ro
