  3. AMD's earnings today kicked off with big news – the company agreed to purchase Xilinx for a whopping $35 billion in an all-stock transaction. Still, that big news shouldn't overshadow the company's stellar performance during its third quarter as the company posted record revenue. While Intel struggles with an unexpected shift to lower-end products for its desktop PC chip sales, punishing its bottom line and margins, AMD continues to chew away market share and notched record client processor revenue and unit shipments. That certainly throws Intel's relatively poor quarter in desktop processor sales into stark relief. AMD's client CPU average selling prices (ASPs) continue to climb, and the company posted record quarterly client processor revenue, signalling that Intel's sudden and unexpected shift to selling more low-end chips comes at the expense of AMD's high-performance Ryzen models snapping up more of Intel's potential sales. AMD is also on the cusp of launching its Ryzen 5000 processors next month, which the company says bring an amazing 19% improvement in IPC and take the lead in gaming performance, so we should see that trend accelerate in the near future. Intel's response will come in the form of Rocket Lake, but we won't see those chips until the latter portion of Q1 2021, meaning AMD should own the holiday season for client processor sales. AMD is firing on nearly all cylinders, with revenue skyrocketing to $2.8 billion, an increase of 56% year-over-year (YoY), and 45% quarter-over-quarter (QoQ). The stellar results stem from strong Ryzen and EPYC processor sales. AMD is also doing well at maintaining (and even slightly improving) its profitability: The company reported a gross margin of 44%, a 1% YoY increase. That yielded a gross profit of $1.23 billion during the quarter. In the client computing and graphics segment, AMD raked in $1.67 billion, a 31% YoY and 22% QoQ increase. Strong Ryzen sales drove those gains, but slow graphics sales dragged on revenue. That isn't surprising in the wake of Nvidia's Ampere launch, though AMD expects that to change with the release of its RDNA2 Big Navi graphics cards that it will announce later this week. Meanwhile, AMD has pulled the covers off its Zen 3-based Ryzen 5000 processors, and sales begin November 5, so its already-stellar desktop PC sales should accelerate further. On that note, AMD reported that both it's desktop PC and notebook processor ASPs increased, OEM sell-through doubled in notebooks YoY, and the number of notebooks designs doubled YoY. AMD CEO Lisa Su said the company believes it gained more share in the client segment for the 12th straight quarter. Operating income of $384 for the client segment was up $205 million YoY and $184 million QoQ, indicating AMD is doing brisk business on the client side of the house. Moving on to the enterprise, embedded, and semi-custom segment, which produces server CPUs and chips for game consoles, AMD posted revenue of $1.13 billion, which is up 116% YoY and 101% QoQ. That comes on the back of increased EPYC server processor sales, with revenue more than doubling YoY driven by cloud and enterprise adoption. That growth comes before AMD's next-gen EPYC Milan chips, which come with the powerful Zen 3 architecture, begin shipping en masse to OEMs in Q1 2021. In the interim, AMD plans to begin shipping Milan chips to cloud and select HPC customers in 4Q 2020. AMD also has chips for the Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X in production, and sales ramps of those consoles over the holidays should further lift this segment through the tail end of the year. AMD has suffered sporadic shortages of some of its client chips this year, which is largely thought to be a byproduct of limited production capacity at TSMC. Su said that supply has improved, helping the company bolster sales in the quarter, and the company doesn't see any significant supply shortages in the near future. Things look good for the remainder of the year, too. AMD guides for $3 billion in revenue for the fourth quarter, a 41% YoY increase. As one would expect, AMD says those gains will come at the hands of increased Ryzen 5000 and EPYC Milan server CPU sales. AMD expects revenue to increase by 41% YoY and gross margins to weigh in at 45% for the full year, setting the stage for yet more growth in 2021.

  4. Barely six weeks old, the new Microsoft Surface Duo is now the prime candidate in Microsofts own 'Seasonal sale,' being offered up with a flat $200 discount, plus trade-in options for potential savings of up to $700. It goes without saying, this is the cheapest price on the Microsoft Surface Duo so far, and one that's left early adopters more than a little bit upset - more on that later. So, is the new Microsoft Surface Duo a tablet, laptop, phablet, or phone? The answer is yes to all the above. In all seriousness, even Microsoft itself has been reluctant to place this brand new device in any of the previously mentioned categories, which is a very hip move if we do say so. Instead, what you're getting is a slick, versatile little device that's squarely aimed at those who value mobile productivity. Its dual screens allow it to function in a variety of modes that resemble a laptop, tablet, or phone, respectively, but it's also got a fair amount of power under that hood, which means you won't be tearing your hair out while using those Microsoft 365 apps. Importantly, it runs on Android, not on Windows like the other Surface devices, so you'll also have all those key mobile functions, plus the ability to pair it with one of the best cell phone plans. So, is this latest early Black Friday deal on the Surface Duo a bit of a slap in the face for early adopters? Unfortunately, Microsoft itself has stated that it will not be refunding the difference for those who bought it on release, instead stating customers need to return their original device and then pick-up another. In our eyes, that's definitely not an amazing consumer-focused response, given the extra hassle it puts customers through. However, people should always be aware that this time of the year is on the cusp of the Black Friday deals period - one where new releases often get flash discounts.

  5. I had high hopes for Mercedes’ voice recognition. But it’s proving a bit hit and miss so far; sometimes it picks up my commands – even complex postcodes – but at other times it gets confused. It’s early days, and I’m finding a more relaxed chatting voice is more effective than a carefully enunciated one. Let’s hope we learn to get along better in time.Sometimes it takes a little jeopardy to push boundaries. Just the night before, I’d done a radio phone-in about electric cars, suggesting that they’re generally hugely capable and that for many more people than are buying them, they could be the perfect means of transport. And then I went to bed without checking my schedule for the next day. So it was with no little amount of horror that I then awoke to discover that – after six months of commuting 12 paces from my bed to my chair – I was due in Northampton, 89 miles away, and that I hadn’t charged the rather lovely Mercedes-Benz EQC overnight. Did I grab the keys to my wife’s trusty 10-year-old Honda Civic, or did I live the change I wanted to see? Back to top I’ll admit that my hand flicked from one set of keys to the other more than once but, after a calming few minutes online researching charger locations, I knew I had to live by my own words. My almost-calamitous organisation meant I had to leave 30 minutes earlier than otherwise but, if all went well, I’d be on time and have enough electrons whizzing around beneath my feet to get home again. And – surprise, surprise – I drove, I stopped and a 35-minute stop at an Ionity/Polar charging station just off the M1 delivered around 70 miles of charge. Naysayers take note: there were 11 fairly-high-speed chargers at this well-known location, and I was the only one using them; come a short distance off the motorway these days and it feels like you’re never far from a chance for a rapid top-up. And while I waited, I was able to go online and clear my emails, so even having to leave early had upsides, too. And while I waited, I was able to go online and clear my emails, so even having to leave early had upsides, too. First impressions? To drive, it’s a cut above the average electric car – which means relaxing or fast on demand, with a frisson of dynamic excitement on offer, albeit one that can never hide its 2495kg kerb weight and sits short of what the I-Pace achieves. It’s a joy to be in, from its comfortable, beautifully upholstered seats to its abundance of practical cubbies. The massive, dasbhboard-length infotainment-and-instruments screen and the head-up display give a futuristic air, although I suspect it’s going to take time for the array of screen, dash and steering wheel buttons to all fall to hand intuitively. The voice-controlled ‘Hey Mercedes’ system helps with that but isn’t infallible as far as my southern English mumbling is concerned. Range will be interesting, too. As it dials into my driving style, an indicated 210 miles is being shown, rather than the official 232. Consider also that it seems to be rating its capabilities around 5% too highly and you end up with a car that records a sub-200-mile figure; that’s potentially 25% short of what I’d consider ideal and less than the Kia e-Niro offers for half the price. It will be interesting to find out if I can learn to use the various driving modes more efficiently and dial my driving style into the car better, too. Most exciting of all is the fact that the EQC is already pushing the boundaries of what I thought I knew about EVs or was willing to do. Question is, is it going to lead me down a path of fulfilment or trouble? Second Opinion I’m most interested to find out how Jim gets on with the EQC’s various driving modes and semi-autonomous driving aids. It’s a complicated thing to get on terms with, as I discovered on the international press launch in Oslo and on a group test. It just shaded its electric rivals in the latter, mostly by being the most multitalented car on the day. But the way the regenerative braking system manages itself around town if you leave it in Auto mode certainly raises some drivability quirks. 6. The Movement of Enterprises in France (MEDEF) — the largest employer association in the country — called on French companies to stay strong in the face of an ongoing boycott campaign prompted by overt Islamophobia. “The French principles of secularism and freedom of speech must take precedence over companies’ development plans,” Geoffroy Roux de Bezieux, MEDEF’s leader, said today. The statement from the business lobby leader came after thousands of Muslims launched a boycott campaign against French products. Activists launched the campaign in response to a rise in Islamophobic acts in France. “Of course this is bad news,” Roux de Bezieux told RMC radio, referring to the boycott campaign. However, according to the French businessman, companies must prioritize France’s “values of secularism and freedom of speech” and be stoic in their handling of the situation. Roux de Bezieux qualified the boycott campaign as “stupid” and urged French business leaders to “not answer stupidity with stupidity.” The campaign came after a series of acts that attacked Islam and Prophet Muhammad. Last week, French President Emmanuel Macron said that France “will not renounce” the caricatures and drawings depicting Prophet Muhammad, defending the “right of blasphemy.” The French government also allowed for the display of caricatures offending Muslims on some of its buildings. Countries such as Kuwait, Jordan, and Morocco have officially condemned the Islamophobic acts in France. Meanwhile, Turkey, along with NGOs and activists in several Muslim countries, went one step further and boycotted French products. Several supermarket chains in Qatar, Kuwait, and Jordan, among other countries, removed French products from their shelves, in a move that observers expect to significantly affect the French economy.

  10. Early Black Friday gaming laptop deals are still available today at Best Buy. Originally posted last week, we spotted this beast of a Ryzen 9 equipped Asus Zephyrus for just $1,199 (was $1,449.99) and we're still eyeing it up right now. The Asus Zephyrus G14 is currently ranked our best gaming laptop so we're always on the hunt for the best offers on this particularly awesome little machine. This is actually the lowest price we've seen this spec go for, and it's a fantastic deal considering you're getting one of the most powerful laptops on the market for a fraction of the price of a new Alienware. The AMD Ryzen 9-4900HS is a particular highlight in this spec, meaning you're not only getting a processor capable of excellent gaming performance, but also with plenty of grunt for productivity tasks. An RTX 2060 graphics card, 16GB of RAM, and a lavish 1TB SSD round out the specs here to make one extremely fast laptop capable of running even the most demanding games at high settings and 1080p resolution. Unfortunately for those on a budget, you've also just missed a similar deal on the baseline spec model, which was going for just $899 last week. We actually didn't think this one was quite as good value as the upgraded spec version, although it's still an extremely capable gaming laptop all around. If you did want to snag yourself that cheaper version, we'd bet money that it'll crop up again in next month's official Black Friday deals so fingers crossed you won't have long to wait. If you're eying up the upgraded spec that's still on sale right now, however, don't feel like you have to wait - Best Buy has guaranteed it won't go any lower come November. Not in the US? Check out the best gaming laptop deals in your region below. Want to do a little bit more reading? Check out our dedicated best Asus Zephyrus G14 prices and deals article for a full breakdown of this awesome machine. If you need something cheaper, also recommended is our best cheap gaming laptop deals article, where prices start at just $629.

  13. Fez-Meknes reported only 33 new cases on Sunday, likely a welcome figure for the formerly hard-hit region. Rabat – Morocco’s Ministry of Health recorded 3,020 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, bringing the country’s total confirmed cases to 197,481. Active cases stand at 30,985 and 743 patients are in severe or critical condition. The ministry also announced 46 new deaths and 2,823 recoveries. Morocco’s COVID-19-related death toll is 3,301, while 163,195 people have recovered from the virus. The country’s fatality rate is 1.7% while the recovery rate is 82.6%. Since March 2, labs throughout the country have conducted more than 3.19 million tests for COVID-19. Of this sum, more than three million came back negative. In the past 24 hours, labs produced 18,348 negative COVID-19 tests. Morocco’s COVID-19 cases by region Casablanca-Settat maintained its usual lead, confirming 1,090 cases and seven deaths on Sunday. The majority of cases (690) emerged in the city of Casablanca, Morocco’s economic capital, followed by Mohammedia (103) and Settat (82). Casablanca also recorded six deaths; the remaining death was in El Jadida. Rabat-Sale-Kenitra followed with 726 new cases and 10 deaths in 24 hours. The majority of the new cases were in Skhirat-Temara (170), Sale (163), Kenitra (151), and Rabat (80). The Oriental confirmed 270 cases, a relatively high figure for the eastern Moroccan region, as well as seven deaths. Oujda-Angad accounted for 125 of the new cases. Souss-Massa, home to the tourist hub Agadir, confirmed 227 new cases and two deaths. Most of the cases (108) were in Agadir-Ida Ou Tanane. The Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region counted 216 new cases and three deaths. Tetouan accounted for 80 of the new cases. In Marrakech-Safi, health authorities recorded 148 cases of COVID-19 and four deaths. The city of Marrakech accounted for the vast majority of cases (112) while the remaining cities in the region each recorded fewer than 20. Beni Mellal-Khenifra, central Morocco, reported 106 new COVID-19 cases and five deaths. The Draa-Tafilalet region closely followed with 105 cases and three deaths. Morocco’s southern regions, as well as Fez-Meknes, each recorded fewer than 100 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday. Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra counted 54 cases and one death and Guelmim-Oued Noun reported 35 cases and no deaths. Fez-Meknes reported even fewer, totaling 33 new cases in what is likely a welcome change for the formerly hard-hit region. However, the region recorded four deaths. Dakhla-Oued Ed Dahab reported only 10 new cases and no deaths.

  16. A power supply that's worthy of your money, with high performance and low noise output. The Thermaltake Toughpower PF1 750 power supply achieves high performance in almost all areas, and on top of that, it is highly efficient. Its overall performance score is high, but it cannot threaten units like the Corsair HX750 and the po[CENSORED]r Seasonic Focus Plus Platinum with similar capacity. Nonetheless, when it comes to efficiency, the Thermaltake offering loses only to the more expensive Seasonic Prime Platinum, having a notable difference from the Focus Plus Platinum 750 and an even larger from the Corsair HX750. With a longer hold-up time and even lower ripple on the minor rails, the PF1 750 could earn a place in our best PSU picks. The Thermaltake Toughpower PF1 line consists of three units with capacities ranging from 650W to 850W. All are 80 PLUS Platinum certified. Cybenetics has also certified them as ETA-A (efficiency), LAMBDA-A, and LAMBDA-A- (noise output). In this review, we will take a look at the middle member of the family, the PF1 with 750W max power. Like all other PF1 models, it is fully modular and has super-compact dimensions, thanks to the 140mm depth. Lastly, it uses a hydraulic bearing fan, which can offer high airflow if required. Thermaltake Toughpower PF1 750W at Amazon for $159.99 The OEM behind Thermaltake's PF1 models is HKC, which is mostly known for its affordable products. During our test sessions, we will determine whether HKC can meet the performance levels of the competition in this high-end category. It won't be easy since it has to face strong competition, including the Seasonic Focus Plus Platinum, Corsair HX750, FSP HPT750M Hydro, and other products. Nonetheless, it is always nice to see new products, and new manufacturers, in this category at least, enter the game.

MITRE Corporation and tech giants release framework to keep us safe from futuristic AI threat Anyone worried about the threat of a Skynet-esque rise of the machines may be able to rest a little easier after the release of new protective measures designed to avoid a potential AI uprising. The nonprofit MITRE Corporation has teamed up with 12 top technology companies, including the likes of Microsoft, IBM and Nvidia to launch the Adversarial ML Threat Matrix. The group says the system is an open framework created to help security analysts spot, alert, respond to and address threats targeting machine learning (ML) systems. Our pick of the best cloud computing servces around today Here's the best workstations for all your power PC needs The best cloud management software choice's we've found ML Matrix Microsoft says the release was motivated by a continuing growth in the number of attacks against commercial ML sytems around the world. The company surveyed a selection of 28 major businesses, finding that almost all are still unaware of the threat that adversarial machine learning can pose, with twenty-five out of the 28 saying that they don’t have the right tools in place to secure their ML systems. The Matrix contains a number of past vulnerabilities and adversary behaviours spotted by Microsoft and MITRE over the years, as well as a whole host of Microsoft's expertise in the security sector. "We also found that when attacking an ML system, attackers use a combination of “traditional techniques” like phishing and lateral movement alongside adversarial ML techniques," Microsoft said in a blog post. The Adversarial ML Threat Matrix GitHub repository is open now for businesses interested in learning more. “When it comes to Machine Learning security, the barriers between public and private endeavors and responsibilities are blurring; public sector challenges like national security will require the cooperation of private actors as much as public investments," noted Mikel Rodriguez, Director of Machine Learning Research, MITRE. "So, in order to help address these challenges, we at MITRE are committed to working with organizations like Microsoft and the broader community to identify critical vulnerabilities across the machine learning supply chain. This framework is a first step in helping to bring communities together to enable organizations to think about the emerging challenges in securing machine learning systems more holistically.” Keep your systems secure with the best endpoint protection services around

  21. When you're designing your battlestation, you've obviously factored in for one of the best gaming PCs with all of the parts you chose, as well as monitors, peripherals and, if you didn't have one, a desk. Oh, and you'll need a chair. If you get a really cheap one, you may not be comfortable. For some streaming cred, you might go with a racing-style gaming chair. But now there's a luxury option. Herman Miller, known for premium ergonomic office furniture, got into the... gaming game this year, with a $1,495 collaboration with Logitech G. The Herman Miller X Logitech G Embody Gaming Chair is the priciest gaming chair we've ever tested, and eschews much of the gamer styling that you often see, in favor of more subtle aesthetics -- indeed, it's practically identical to Herman Miller's Embody chair meant for offices. There are a few twists for extra comfort for long gaming sessions. But ultimately, the Embody is a very expensive, very comfortable gaming chair. For many, the price will be the point that stops them in the tracks. But regardless, the Embody shows what a gaming chair could -- and arguably should -- be: something focused on comfort and performance, rather than a gaming status symbol. The Herman Miller X Logitech G Embody Gaming Chair (which I’ll refer to as the Embody from here on out) looks like a chair I’ve seen before, but like no gaming chair I’ve ever seen before. Specifically, it doesn’t have the throne-style, racing seat aesthetic seen on gaming chairs used by streamers on Twitch or by many professional esports players. There’s no head pillow, lumbar pillows, no massive logos, and no black pleather. No, the Embody looks like a very modern office chair. That’s because it is largely the same as an existing Herman Miller chair by the same name. There are a ton of similarities: The gaming chair has the same backrest that reduces in width as it hits the top, while the back has a spine and a series of supports that look like ribs. It sits on a sturdy aluminum base with five wheels designed for either hard floors or carpets The chair doesn’t scream “gaming.” The more aggressive aesthetics are still quite subtle. There are some imprints in the foam on the seat and backrest that give the slight impression of something metal, like a tank tread or a Power Rangers Dragonzord. There’s a small Logitech G logo at the top of the backrest, but it’s the same color as the fabric. The back of the chair uses a flexible, dark cyan plastic, the same color as the adjustment buttons that you’ll find under the arm rests and on the lever to raise and lower the chair. When combined with the dark grays found everywhere else on the chair, it matches the colors you find on many of Logitech’s G-series gaming peripherals. There’s also a parachute tag on the back with the Logitech G and Herman Miller logos. All of the materials feel premium. The majority of the frame is aluminum, though there is still some plastic, which keeps the chair light. The seat is covered in polyester that Herman Miller claims is tested for durability, seam strength, color retention and flame resistance. (I never thought about my chair catching fire before this.) I worry a bit about keeping it clean, if only because the fabric would be more difficult to wipe down than the pleather you feel on gaming chairs. Perhaps the one place that could obviously be improved are the armrests. While I found the foam to be comfortable, for $1,495, leather armrests would have been appreciated, though they may have clashed with the rest of the chair. Unlike many gaming chairs, the Embody comes assembled straight out of the box. All I had to do was open the (very sizable) packaging, tear off some protective plastic and adjust the chair to my liking.
