  4. A 4.4-magnitude earthquake shook Southern California about 25 miles east of downtown Los Angeles on Tuesday, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The quake struck about 7:33 p.m. local time, the USGS said. It was centered about three miles north of the city of La Verne in the San Gabriel Valley. “It was like if somebody had grabbed it and was shaking the house,” Vickie Carillo of La Verne, who was watching "Jaws 2" with her son, told the Los Angeles Times. The quake was followed by a magnitude 3.4 temblor a minute later. “We haven't had an earthquake in quite a while — I mean not like that,” Carillo said, after finding trophies, books and other items on the floor. “I'm just glad I didn't get in the shower like I was going to.” Victor Flores, who lives in a two-story house in La Verne, told the Times that the shaking was “extremely violent.” “It was moving the whole house,” he said. “It shook hard for what seemed like 10 to 20 seconds, and then it just kept going. It was really loud too, kind of like thunder. It just hit really hard and quick.” The main quake was widely felt, either as a sharp jolt near the epicenter or a rolling motion farther away. It shook buildings for several seconds in downtown Los Angeles. The jolt also was felt 40 miles away in Sylmar to the northwest and 30 miles south in Huntington Beach.

  8. One man, accused of a trio of weapons violations, remains the only person charged in connection with the carnage wrought three weeks ago in Chicago, when 75 people were shot -- 12 fatally -- during the city's bloodiest weekend of the year. Rick Franklin, 27, was arrested Aug. 4, and charged with three felony weapons charges, including aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. The offenses were linked to Franklin due to the latest technology being monitored by police and civilian analysts, the Chicago Tribune reported. After Franklin allegedly fired a gun near an intersection, the shots were detected by acoustic sensors in the area, and an alert was soon sent to a monitoring center more than a mile away. Cops then immediately used surveillance cameras at the intersection to track down a blue Ford Focus seen fleeing the scene, officials said. But Franklin is the only alleged shooter who's been charged after a weekend so violent it prompted Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel to deploy an extra 600 officers to patrol the streets. Chicago police’s clearance rate for solving homicides was around 17 percent in 2017 and is on pace for similar numbers this year, according to the Tribune. “Other cities are a lot better than us,” said Brendan Deenihan, deputy chief in the detective division. “And we have to take ownership for our low clearance rate and I understand that. And we will do so." He added: “However, every single study I have read, the most difficult cases to solve are outside violence with a handgun, gang involvement. And, unfortunately, in the city of Chicago that is the vast number of shootings.” Meanwhile a 25-year-old man was killed early Thursday morning when another vehicle pulled up to him at a red light and fired multiple shots, striking the man in the head, shoulder, arm and thigh. The victim drove off but crashed his vehicle into a tree. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Emanuel is under increasing pressure to take action or resign as the crime problems mount. Last week he drew criticism for blaming a lack of “moral structure” in predominantly black and Hispanic neighborhoods for the crime spree. “This may not be politically correct," he said, "but I know the power of what faith and family can do....Our kids need that structure...I am asking...that we also don’t shy away from a full discussion about the importance of family and faith helping to develop and nurture character, self-respect, a value system and a moral compass that allows kids to know good from bad and right from wrong.” Chicago’s chief of police, Supt. Eddie Johnson, this week blamed the violence epidemic on judges and prosecutors who refuse to jail repeat offenders. Johnson said his department can “only do so much,” noting “it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out why shootings continue to be a problem in Chicago.” He continued: “If people don’t give us the information we need, and our judicial partners don’t hold them accountable, would you stop if that’s what you wanted to do? You know, it’s ridiculous.” Chicago residents on Friday morning were bracing themselves for another what could be another violent weekend. Last weekend was the second bloodiest of the year, with 58 people shot and seven killed.

  12. Russia and Argentina have used a crematorium in Buenos Aires to burn 389kg (858 pounds) of cocaine seized in a drugs bust at the Russian embassy. The total haul of cocaine destroyed was estimated to be worth €80m (£72m; $93m). A former embassy caretaker and an Argentine policeman are among six people held in both countries. The burning marks the end of a long-running police operation that wouldn't disgrace a crime best-seller. The Powder Plot In 2016, the ex Russian ambassador alerted Argentine officials to 12 suitcases found hidden in an embassy annex. The problem? They were packed full of drugs. After the tip-off, Argentine police got into the room with an embassy key in the dead of night, and replaced the cocaine with flour. They also tagged the cases with GPS tracking devices. The plan was to wait for the owners to collect their cases, then swoop. But police were in for a very long wait, as Argentine Security Minister Patricia Bullrich explained. "The operation took 14 months and at one point we thought that they wouldn't come for their cargo, that they realised that someone was under suspicion. But everything went well," she said, quoted by Russia's Tass news agency. A year later, the cases arrived in Moscow, and arrests followed. It is still unclear why the suspects waited so long to move the drugs. Russian Ambassador Dmitry Feoktistov and Ms Bullrich took part in the incineration on Tuesday. The alleged ringleader of the smuggling gang is Andrei Kovalchuk, who was arrested in Germany and extradited to Russia in July. Russian media name the other accused Russians as Vladimir Kalmykov, Ishtimir Khudzhamov, and Ali Abyanov. Authorities suspect that Mr Kovalchuk hired Mr Abyanov to store the cocaine cargo in the school attached to the embassy, and to organise its transfer to Russia. At the time Mr Abyanov was the embassy's caretaker. Russia's RBC news website says Mr Kalmykov and Mr Khudzhamov were arrested when they came to collect the cases at a Russian foreign ministry warehouse. The suspects have called the police operation a "provocation", and have said they were trying to export speciality coffee from Argentina. Two Russians with Argentine citizenship are under arrest in Argentina - Alexander Chikalo, and a senior Buenos Aires policeman, Ivan Blizniouk. The policeman is suspected of having pulled rank at the airport, enabling the cases to be loaded onto a Russian plane without customs checks. Ms Bullrich praised the "fantastic" security co-operation with Russia, saying it had been a "very complicated operation" and "Russian police officers came here seven times".

  18. Four men have been stabbed and six have been arrested following an incident in Camberwell. Officers were called to playing fields outside Landor House at 5.24pm following reports of a stabbing. According to a Scotland Yard spokesperson, the four men, all believed to be in their teens, "have all been taken to south London hospitals." "Six males have been arrested in connection with the incident. Police remain at the scene. The condition of the four men is not yet known. A witness, who did not give her name, described seeing boys running on the grass opposite her flat shortly before the stabbing. "There were four or five black boys running. All of a sudden I could hear, 'Help, help'," she said. She added that when she walked up, she saw police officers running and a boy on the floor. A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We sent a number of resources to the scene including ambulance crews, a single responder in a car and an incident response officer. "We treated four people at the scene and took them to hospital." Local residents posted images of the crime scene to social media. One person who wished to stay anonymous told the Standard they saw the aftermath of the incident. "It must have only just happened. My bus braked and I looked up as the Police cars pulled up in front of the bus. I saw at least 10 officers run to the estate and others were already there. "A number of officers were pushing members of the public including young people away and three or four officers were gathered a short distance away and looked like they were bending over tending to someone. Superintendent Annmarie Cowley, of Southwark police, said: “This incident is in its very early stages and at present we cannot speculate on what the nature of it may be. “What we can say for certain is if there needed to be an example of the utter senselessness of knife crime, then this is it; four males are in hospital, and at this stage we cannot say how serious their injuries are. It is beyond comprehension. “I would like to offer my reassurance to the community that officers are responding robustly; we remain at the scene and have also requested additional resources from the Territorial Support Group and Violent Crime Taskforce to patrol the area. “Additionally, a Section 60 has been authorised from 18:30hrs to 09:30hrs on Friday, 17 August, providing officers with powers to deter any further potential trouble." The crime scene is just a short walk from Warham Street, where 23-year-old drill rapper Sidique Kamara, also known as Incognito, was stabbed to death on August 1."
