  2. Another computer-security firm is raising concerns about the potential for hackers to glean users' personal data from phone apps released by the campaigns of Republican presidential contenders Ted Cruz and John Kasich. An independent analysis released Monday by Symantec determined that the "Cruz Crew" phone app could allow third parties to capture a phone's unique identifying number and other personal information. The company said the Kasich 2016 app could expose users' location data and information about other apps installed on the phones. The Associated Press first reported on potential vulnerabilities in March after the computer-security firm Veracode performed detailed reviews of phone apps released by presidential campaigns from both parties. The Cruz campaign updated its app to resolve some issues, while a Kasich spokesman said the security experts were wrong.
  3. [EN] All well and good, until they appear in a fly landscape. What to do? If you have a CD handy, whether it's new or it's used, it's good to get him out on the line. Tie it with string and hang it from the window frame. It seems that the flies are afraid of light that is reflected dvd and avoid the area. Thus, they will not take advantage of that window is open and will not enter the house. [RO] Toate bune și frumoase, până își face apariția în peisaj o muscă. Ce-i de făcut? Dacă ai la îndemână un CD, fie că e nou, fie că e folosit, e bine să-l scoți la bătaie. Leagă-l cu ață și agaţă-l de tocul geamului. 7. British actor Ian McKellen poses for a photograph during a photo call in central London on April 22, 2016 A new iPad app intended to make William Shakespeare's works more accessible is being launched by actor Ian McKellen and director Richard Loncraine on Saturday, the 400th anniversary of the Bard's death. The app users see actors reading out "The Tempest", facing the camera with no costume or staging as the text scrolls, and its developers said they hope eventually to cover all of Shakespeare's 37 plays. "This is not a production. We're in our own clothes, the actors are not relating to each other. The person we're relating to is you, the person at the other end of the app," said McKellen, who worked with Loncraine on a production of "Richard III" 20 years ago. "We're trying to help you," he said. "Shakespeare did not mean you to read it. He wanted the actors to read it, learn it, put the script aside and speak it to the audience," he added. "The Tempest" was chosen because it is Shakespeare's last play but also the one that appears first in a compilation of Shakespeare works put together in 1623—seven years after the famous playwright's death. Users can pause the readings to click on notes whose level of detail can be adapted if the viewers are schoolchildren or university students. Loncraine, who set up Heuristic Media, said the app "helps people to comprehend" Shakespeare but was "not meant to be a substitute" for watching a play. "It was written 400 years ago so it's very, very difficult for modern audiences who haven't studied it," he said. The programme "strips away elements that you don't need to understand the text," he said. The filming took place over two days at Pinewood Studios near London, which were recently used for the latest instalment of "Star Wars". The actors are all experienced Shakespeare hands, sitting side by side in front of the cameras and with a large prompter scrolling the text. In September, Heuristic Media is planning to record four more plays—"Romeo and Juliet", "Macbeth", "Othello" and "Midsummer Night's Dream"—always with a prominent actor in the primary role. "Shakespeare's work stays alive by evolving into new media," said Jonathan Bate, professor of English literature at Oxford University, adding that the new app was "true to Shakespeare". The app is addressed mainly to students reading Shakespeare in the original language—an audience estimated by Loncraine at 56 million people. But can also help adult audiences familiarise themselves with plays before going to the theatre. McKellen said: "It's only when you get into the theatre that you'll get the real Shakespeare experience."
  8. A larger battery, beefier CPU, and other goodies let it run longer and faster. Unlike its predecessor, the Yoga 900’s isn’t trying to be the slimmest reversible laptop around. It’s 18 percent thicker than the Yoga 3 Pro to accommodate a more powerful Intel Core i5 or i7 processor—the Pro used a Core M chip—and the larger battery and additional cooling it requires. That means considerably better performance and a longer runtime. Those are improvements that no one will complain about, unless they prefer a skinny machine. The Yoga 900 starts at $1,150 and is available from Best Buy and Lenovo. Thin to win That said, Lenovo claims that the Yoga 900 is the thinnest Core laptop on the market. That may well be, but at 0.59 inches thick and 2.8 pounds, it’s still bigger than the older 0.5-inch, 2.6-pound Yoga 3 Pro. However, with its slightly reduced depth (8.86 inches versus 9 inches) and width (12.75 inches versus 13 inches), the Yoga 900 has crossed over into looking somewhat generic due to its squatter profile. While an 18-percent increase sounds like a lot, the extra thickness isn’t all that much. But though I prefer the look of the Yoga 3 Pro, the Yoga 900 is an attractive laptop, especially since it also boasts the Yoga line’s fancy watchband hinge. It’s too bad that motif isn’t applied subtly to the rest of the laptop, but if you want to turn heads, you can always opt for the Clementine Orange color. The now famous watchband hinge on the Clementine Orange model Yoga 900. Details, details... The Yoga 900 is a fully reversible laptop with a 13.3-inch, 3200x1800 IPS touchscreen display. Its picture is great under most circumstances, especially playing movies in low-light conditions, and has a decent amount of brightness. On the minus side, the screen reflects quite a bit of light, and it has a rather healthy amount of bezel. It’s hard not to want something sleeker after the example set by Dell’s XPS 13. The port selection on the Yoga 900 is minimal but adequate for everyday use. You get two USB 3.0 Type A ports, a USB 2.0 charging port, an SD/MMC card reader, combo analog audio jack, and a USB Type C port. That Type C gives you standard USB 3.0 (5Gbps) speeds. It doesn’t support Thunderbolt 3, nor charging. You don’t get a dedicated video-out port, but the Type-C port provides DisplayPort over USB if you use an optional dongle. The Yoga 900 in tablet mode. The Yoga 900 is available with an Intel Core i7-6500U CPU, a 256GB or 512GB SSD, and up to 16GB of DDR3-1600 memory. All versions come with 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0. Our $1,400 model had its specs maxed out, while the minimal Core i7 configuration runs $1,150. Performance With a faster CPU, it was no surprise that our Yoga 900 zipped past its predecessor in our PCMark benchmarks, scoring 2,531 versus the Yoga 3 Pro’s 1,723 in the Home Conventional test, which runs the system through basic tasks like word processing, web browsing, and light photo editing. It also scored 2,778 versus the Yoga 3 Pro’s 1,988 in the Work Conventional test, which is similar to the Home Conventional test but with a stronger focus on work-oriented tasks like spreadsheet editing. This improvement in performance will show more clearly the more you throw at the Yoga 900. While the Yoga 900 smokes the Yoga 3 Pro, it does slightly underperform competition with the exact same processor. That said, the difference is so small you won’t really notice it. The Yoga 900’s SSD keeps things moving along quickly. Our AS SSD benchmark clocked the Samsung SM871 M.2 SATA SSD at a high of 473MBps for sequential read speed and a high of 437MBps for sequential write speed. That’s decently quick, if not as fast as an M.2 PCIe SSD would have been in the same scenario. Battery life is decent, even if it’s not the nine hours Lenovo touts. The Yoga 900 lasted 6 hours and 37 minutes during our video rundown test, in which we run a 4K ultra-HD video on loop using the native Windows 10 media player. Thanks to the Yoga 900’s larger 66WHr battery, that’s almost 50 percent longer than the Yoga 3 Pro, with its 44.8WHr power cell. As for watching movies with the sound going through the laptop speakers—you get a surprisingly decent experience that way. No one will mix their next album using the Yoga 900’s speakers, but the clarity is better than average, and there’s even a modicum of bass. They’ll do if you’re too lazy to pull out your headphones. The Yoga 900 in reverse-stand mode. Input ergonomics I’ve generally praised Lenovo for its keyboards, and the Yoga 900’s is about as good as it gets. It even offers dedicated functions keys—the Yoga 3 Pro instead had combined them with the top-row numeric keys. I do have a personal issue with the lack of forward rake to the unit and the keyboard deck, because I encounter lots of accidents with the space bar. That’s easily fixed with a couple of self-adhesive rubber feet for the rear of the Yoga to add the incline that I need, though. The Yoga 900 in normal laptop orientation. The touchpad feels very comfortable to use: It doesn’t require much effort to click, and it’s very smooth when dragging your fingers across it. It also isn’t overly sensitive to tapping. As for the touchscreen, I can’t speak highly enough of it. I wish they made touchpads that were as smoothly responsive. Software and warranty There was a fair amount of “value-added” software running in the Windows 10 Home system tray, a lot of it courtesy of Intel. Removing it (hint: remove then re-install the Intel drivers using Device Manager) as well as McAfee made for a slightly smoother experience. The base warranty on the Lenovo Yoga 3 900 is a one-year carry-in. You can increase that all the way to three years with accidental damage protection for $219, or pick an option in the middle. Conclusion If the Yoga 3 Pro was like a stick-thin runway model, the Yoga 900 is like a muscle-toned fitness model. The Yoga 900 has much more of an edge over the Yoga 3 Pro when it comes to specs and performance, rather than in purely chic looks. It’d be nice to have seen features on it like 10Gbps USB and a PCIe SSD, but all things considered, it’s still a chart-topping reversible. And everybody will dig the hinge.
  9. A university professor has been hacked to death in Bangladesh, in an attack police say is similar to killings of secular bloggers and atheists by suspected Islamist extremists. AFM Rezaul Karim Siddique, 58, was a professor of English at Rajshahi University in the country's north-west. He was attacked with machetes by unidentified assailants while on his way to the university from his home. Last year, four prominent secular bloggers were killed with machetes. However, Siddique's colleagues say that he had not written anything controversial and was not an atheist, unlike previous victims. Police believe that he may have been targeted by suspected Islamist extremists because he was involved in cultural activities. The BBC's Dhaka correspondent Akbar Hossain says hardline Islamist groups dislike anyone involved in the cultural field. Siddique had founded a music school and edited a literary magazine, his family told the BBC. Deputy police commissioner Nahidul Islam told AFP news agency that the music school was in Bagmara, a former bastion of outlawed Islamist group Jamayetul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB). His family say they cannot understand his murder Members of JMB were arrested over an assault on an Italian Catholic priest late last year. Siddique's wife, Hosne Ara, said she had no idea why anyone would want to kill her husband. "As far as I know, my husband didn't have any personal enmity with anyone. I can't believe that he has been murdered," she told the BBC. Hundreds of students at Rajshahi University are reported to have protested on campus against their teacher's death and demanded the immediate arrest of the perpetrators. Siddique is the fourth professor at the university to be have been killed in the past 12 years. It is not clear why they have been targeted and no culprits have been punished. Earlier this month, a Bangladeshi law student who had expressed secular views online died when he was hacked with machetes and then shot in Dhaka. The four bloggers killed last year had all appeared on a list of 84 "atheist bloggers" drawn up by Islamic groups in 2013 and widely circulated. There have also been attacks on members of religious minorities including Shia, Sufi and Ahmadi Muslims, Christians and Hindus. Several men are under arrest for last year's killings, including some attached to a hardline group called the Ansarullah Bangla Team. Muslim-majority Bangladesh is officially secular but critics say the government has failed to properly address the attacks. Last week, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued a stern warning to anyone who criticised religion: "I don't consider such writings as freethinking but filthy words. Why would anyone write such words? It's not at all acceptable if anyone writes against our prophet or other religions."
  10. Volkswagen has more than doubled its provisions for the diesel emissions scandal to €16.2bn (£12.6bn). Last year it told shareholders that €6.7bn had been set aside for potential costs or recalls. The increased sum included the cost of fixing cars that violate air pollution standards, buying back vehicles and legal costs. The move comes as German carmakers agreed to recall 630,000 diesel vehicles to tweak engine software. German transport minister Alexander Dobrindt said Mercedes Benz, Opel and Porsche as well as Volkswagen and Audi would adjust settings that increased levels of emissions such as nitrogen dioxide in some diesel cars. Shares in Daimler fell 4.6% in Frankfurt after the Mercedes owner said it had begun an internal investigation into its diesel emissions testing at the request of the US Justice Department. It said net profit for the first quarter fell by a third to €1.4bn, held back by costs associated with the launch of the new E-Class range. The bigger-than-expected decline came despite a 2% rise in revenue to €35bn as sales rose 7% to 683,885 vehicles. VW chief executive Matthias Mueller said he could not put a figure on the total cost of the emissions scandal until a final deal was reached with US authorities. Nor could the company release preliminary findings from an investigation it commissioned from law firm Jones Day until reaching an agreement, it said. VW still faced US Justice Department fines as part of an expected civil settlement, as well as possible criminal charges. On Thursday, a US court disclosed details of a deal between VW and the US Department of Justice for more than 500,000 American owners of its diesel cars affected by the emissions cheating. The deal will involve buybacks and "substantial" compensation for owners of mostly two-litre vehicles. UK questions US district court Judge Charles Breyer said he expected an agreement between VW and regulators covering about 90,000 larger vehicles and SUVs to be addressed "expeditiously". Final details of the packages offered will be announced in June. Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin has asked Volkswagen why it was offering compensation to customers affected by the diesel emissions scandal in the US but not the UK. A Downing Street spokeswoman said: "We expect VW to treat its UK customers fairly and to adequately address their concerns. The Transport Secretary has pressed VW on the specific issue of this discrepancy of compensation." VW sales The increased emissions provision pushed VW to an annual pre-tax loss of €1.3bn, compared with a profit of €14.7bn the previous year. VW expected group sales to fall by up to 5% in 2016. Chief financial officer Frank Witter said: "We are again operating in an exceedingly challenging environment in which global demand for new vehicles is declining, exchange rates and interest rates remain highly volatile and competition in many of our markets is intensifying." Shares in VW closed down 1.7% in Frankfurt on Friday and are more than 40% lower than at this time last year. Analysts at Evercore ISI said in a note: "Investors should be relieved by the fact that VW has put a number on the financial risk associated with the vast majority of its diesel issues... Management should now be in a position to more actively address the turnaround plan for the VW brand. NordLB analyst Frank Schwope, who has a "hold" rating on VW shares, said: "The crisis in Wolfsburg is far from over yet."

  12. Prince released his first album in 1978 and went on to sell more than 100 million records - here are some of Prince's greatest hits The hugely popu.lar, acclaimed and influential musician Prince has died at his home in Minnesota at the age of 57. Police were summoned to his Paisley Park estate early on Thursday and found his body in a lift. An investigation has been opened. Prince became a global superstar in the 1980s, with albums such as 1999, Purple Rain and Sign O' the Times. His innovative music spanned rock, funk and jazz. He sold more than 100 million records during his career. "It is with profound sadness that I am confirming that the legendary, iconic performer, Prince Rogers Nelson, has died," his spokeswoman said. "There are no further details as to the cause of death at this time." In a statement, Carver County Sheriff Jim Olson said his deputies responded to a medical call at about 09:43 local time (11:43 GMT) and later found an unresponsive adult male in an elevator at Paisley Park Studios. First responders tried to revive him with CPR but he was pronounced dead at 10:07. Hundreds of fans have now gathered outside Paisley Park. US President Barack Obama said the world had lost a "creative icon". 'A visionary' - Madonna Born in 1958, Prince was a prolific writer and performer from a young age - reportedly writing his first song when he was seven. A singer, songwriter, arranger and multi-instrumentalist, Prince recorded more than 30 albums. His best known hits include Let's Go Crazy and When Doves Cry. 'A joy to watch': By Mark Savage, BBC entertainment reporter Prince was in his element as a live performer, like here at the 2007 Super Bowl A musical prodigy from a broken home, Prince famously wrote, arranged, produced and played almost all of his hit records. But the Purple man's purple patch really came with his first band The Revolution. With them by his side, he wrote more than two dozen rock classics in a five-year flurry. Purple Rain, Little Red Corvette, 1999, Raspberry Beret, When Doves Cry, Kiss... At the same time, he dashed off Manic Monday for The Bangles and Nothing Compares 2U, made famous by Sinead O'Connor. In the studio, he was unstoppable. But the magic really happened on stage. He would vamp, preen and tease an audience into a frenzy, then slay them with a quiet moment of crystalline beauty. He was a joy to watch. He also wrote music for several artists - Sinead O'Connor's version of Nothing Compares 2U became a worldwide smash in 1990. In 1984, he won an Oscar for the score to Purple Rain, a film he also starred in. Throughout his career he had a reputation for secrecy and eccentricity, once changing his name to an unpronounceable symbol. In 2004, Prince was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, which said he "rewrote the rulebook". Prince released more than 30 albums in a long career He had been touring as recently as this month Prince is widely regarded as one of the most inventive and imaginative musicians of his era He had a mercurial relationship with technology. In 2000, he released singles via the pioneering music-sharing service Napster, but he later declared the internet "completely over" and refused to allow his music on major streaming platforms. Prince's latest album, HITnRUN Phase Two, was released last year and he had been touring as recently as last week. On 15 April he was taken to hospital after his private plane made an emergency landing in Illinois. It happened just hours after he had performed on stage in Georgia. He was treated and released after a few hours. Tributes have been pouring in from artists young and old, across the musical spectrum. Madonna, who dated Prince briefly, described him as a "visionary who changed the world" Chic guitarist Nile Rogers said there were "tears and love on our tour bus" Singer Justin Timberlake: "Numb. Stunned. This can't be real" Guitarist Slash said Prince was "one of the greatest musical talents of my lifetime. Maybe of the 20th century" Boy George: "Today is the worst day ever. Prince RIP I am crying!" "I can't believe it, I'm in total shock. So many wonderful memories," wrote Lionel Richie Musician and actor Wyclef Jean: "RIP to the King Prince thank u for inspiring me to be a Musician First and using this tool to heal people" Mick Jagger said Prince's talent was "limitless", calling him a "revolutionary artist, a great musician, a wonderful lyricist" "It's such a blow. It's really surreal. It's just kind of unbelievable," Aretha Franklin told MSNBC. "He was definitely an original and a one of a kind. Truly there was only one Prince." This theatre in New York carried a commemorative message
  13. Timeline of the research activities and fu.ture implication. Credit: Dr. Daniel Graziotin While constantly developing, software takes over more and more aspects of our life at both individual and community level. Thus, software failures and security are easily becoming major concerns which need to be addressed on the spur of the moment. A way to do so, according to computer scientist Dr Daniel Graziotin, University of Stuttgart, is adopting a new concept, which he terms 'Software quality information needs', along with multi-angled extensive empirical evidence to produce a development tool to improve software quality. His Grant Proposal is published in the open access journal Research Ideas and Outcomes (RIO). The proposed research is in the context of an earlier DFG Grant Proposal, authored by Prof. Dr. Stefan Wagner, University of Stuttgart, and published in the same journal. The earlier project idea suggests novel tools analysing software changes before and during their implementation. Similarly to Dr Daniel Graziotin's idea, it is based on fast and focused feedback loop. The presently proposed research, planned to take 24 months, is set to start with establishing the 'software quality information needs' construct. The author coins this theory in order to conceptualise and provide deeper understanding of the information essential for a developer when performing code changes or designing new parts of a system. The project is to then go on to produce metrics to detect and satisfy a developer's needs. As a result, optimally unobtrusive measurement techniques are to be developed and evaluated in three empirical studies. About 120 software engineering students from the University of Stuttgart are to be recruited to provide empirical evidence. While they are working on either real-world or university software projects, they are to be observed, regularly interviewed and asked to think aloud. Their insights will be further enriched through a post-task interview. The findings are to answer the question "How can we conceptualise information needs when dealing with software quality?". "What information is needed when dealing with software quality?", is to be covered by the second empirical study, which plans to involve the software engineers of Daimler, Porsche, and Bosch, since the automotive industry is particularly concerned with software quality issues. The engineers are to fill in mostly open-ended surveys and thus, provide a broad view of software quality information needs and their priority from a practitioner's perspective. Building on the above case studies, the German multinational engineering and electronics company Robert Bosch GmbH is to be approached for validated questionnaires and behavior patterns tests, such as keystroke frequency and typos detection. Ultimately, the findings are to answer how software quality information needs to be detected unobtrusively through behavioral patterns. To exemplify the tool, based on the described research and its expected findings, the scientist uses fictional software developer, called Anne. While working on a system routine to be applied in a banking application, she is notified by the integrated development environment (IDE), that there might be some quality issues. It turns out that she is employing a design pattern that is not frequently employed in similar cases, so the IDE suggests that she browses some StackOverflow.com related questions and answers regarding the design pattern. Because she has also created part of the procedure by cloning code from another part of the project, the tool offers her to help to refactor the cloned code. "Providing a software developer with the right kind of information about the current state of and the effect of changes on software quality can prevent catastrophic software failures and avoid opening up security holes," Dr Daniel Graziotin argues.
  14. It's the first liquid-cooled tablet with a Skylake Core I processor, the company says Acer's Switch Alpha 12 shown at a press event in New York City on April 21, 2016. One wouldn't typically imagine liquid cooling in a tablet, but Acer has pulled it off with its latest Switch Alpha 12. The liquid-cooling feature is especially noteworthy, considering fans are disappearing from tablets and hybrids. But tablet has Intel's Skylake-based Core I processors, and it needed a cooling mechanism, and Acer didn't want fans in it. While announcing the tablet Thursday, Acer said it is the first fanless tablet with a Skylake Core I processor. The device doesn't use Intel's power-efficient Core M processors, which is offered in many Windows thin-and-lights and the new MacBook. The Acer device has a "closed-loop liquid system," which dissipates the heat as liquid floats through the system. The liquid cooling system takes up little space. The tablet has a 12-inch screen that can display images at 2160 x 1440 pixels. It has a kickstand, much like the Surface Pro. A detachable keyboard will ship for free with the laptop. Acer didn't immediately provide the price. The Switch Alpha 12 comes with up to 8GB of RAM, up to 512GB SSDs storage, and integrated Intel 520 graphics. It offers eight hours of battery life, and it weighs 900 grams, or 1.25 kilograms with the keyboard attachment. Also announced by Acer was a new S 13 ultrathin notebook, which has a 13.3-inch screen. It has a full HD screen, offers up to 13 hours of battery life and runs on Intel's latest Skylake Core chips. Acer also showed the R 15 convertible laptop, which is powerful enough to provide a decent gaming experience. It has a 15.6-inch screen and can be packed with up to 12GB of the latest DDR4 memory, and an Nvidia GeForce 940MX GPU. It has a full HD display.

  16. Google has made it tougher for people to hide behind excuses when it comes to finding time to hit the gym or learn new languages. Google added "Goals" tools to free calendar applications tailored for smartphones powered by Apple or Android software, using artificial intelligence to let software figure out when one could fit in workouts or lessons Google added "Goals" tools to free calendar applications tailored for smartphones powered by Apple or Android software, using artificial intelligence to let software figure out when one could fit in workouts or lessons. "Whether it's reading more books, learning a new language or working out regularly, achieving your goals can be really hard," Google product manager Jyoti Ramnath said in a blog post. "That's why starting today, we're introducing Goals in Google Calendar." People can add personal goals such as going for runs or getting to gyms, and then Google calendar software analyzes schedules for optimal times to squeeze in activities, according to Ramnath. Calendar will automatically reschedule time for personal goals if conflicts arise, and is programmed to automatically reschedule activities if users simply prefer to put them off. The more people use the Goals feature in Calendar, the better the software gets at picking times for personal objectives, according to Google. "Calendars should help you make the most of your time, not just be tools to track events," Ramnath said.
  17. If the merger fails, how long can these smaller vendors hold on? Toshiba's Satellite PC business will have to go it alone, it appears, as a proposed Vaio/Toshiba/Fujitsu merger apparently is falling apart. A three-way merger between Fujitsu, Toshiba, and Vaio Corp., seen as a way for these smaller PC players to take on larger rivals like HP Inc. and Dell, is apparently collapsing. The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that the talks between the three companies were breaking down, and that Japan Industrial Partners (JIP) Inc., which owns a controlling stake in Vaio, had already walked away. As the Journal points out, though, the combined 2015 market share of all three companies is less than 6.5 percent, which falls just below Apple’s 7.1 percent of worldwide market share. If the talks fall through, it’s possible the companies would just go their separate ways, an increasingly risky proposition as the PC industry continues its downward slide. It’s worth noting that JIP CEO Hidemi Moue publicly talked up the three-way deal as late as February. “The PC market is shrinking, which means there are merits in working together to make the most of research, production volumes, and marketing channels,”Moue told Bloomberg. At the time, Moue talked about the possibility of moving beyond PCs into smartphones, and predicted that a deal would be achieved by the end of March. With Vaio apparently out of the talks, it’s less likely that Toshiba and Fujitsu would combine forces, unless the two can find a particular niche to exploit. Panasonic, for example, has fallen by the wayside as far as overall PC unit sales are concerned, but the company has refocused itself on its Toughbook ruggedized PCs. Discussions of a three-way merger began last fall, when Japan’s Nikkei financial paper reported that the three companies were thinking of combining their notebook businesses, with each receiving a relatively equal stake in equity. The story behind the story: The most important number in all of this isn’t the relative market share of HP, Dell, Toshiba, or any one PC player. It’s the “others” category, the catchall for the smaller players that don’t make the top five. As late as the second quarter of 2014, the “others” category sold 26.6 million PCs, worth 35.0 percent of the market—just under double that of the leading vendor, Lenovo. Now, that total is down to 21.8 million PCs, and 33.6 percent. If the PC market continues to shrink, chances are the big players will become bigger—and the smaller vendors? They could just fade away.

There are a variety of ways to do this, including built-in tools, downloadable programs, and browser-based solutions. Read on after the jump to learn how. Method 1. Windows Remote Desktop (PC) 1. Enable Remote Desktop on the computer you want to access. On the Windows PC that you want to access, you will need to enable Remote Access so that other computers can connect to it. You can enable this on the Pro or Enterprise versions of XP, Vista, 7, and 8. This method requires that you be on the same network as the computer you want to access, either through the router or through a VPN. Press the Windows key + Pause to open the System menu. An alternative method is to click the Start menu, open up the Control Panel, click System and Security, then click System. Click the “Remote settings” link on the left side of the window. Check the “Allow remote connections to this computer” box. You can adjust some of the advanced options, such as length of time an invitation is good for, by clicking the “Advanced” button. 2. Add users. You will need to set which users can log in remotely on that machine. Click the “Select Users” button, and then click the Add button. Choose which users you would like to add. 3. Find the system name. When you connect to the computer, you will need to know the system name. You can find this by pressing Windows key + Pause and looking for the “Computer name” entry. 4. Disable Sleep mode. You will not be able to connect to a computer that is Sleeping or in Hibernate. Make sure to disable these if you want to connect remotely. Open the Control Panel and then select Power Options. You may have to switch views to see the icon. Click the “Change plan settings” link next to your active plan. Set Sleep and Hibernate to Never. Click the “Save changes” button when you are finished. 5. Connect to the computer. Log on to the computer that you want to use to connect to the remote computer. Click the Start menu and enter “remote desktop connection” into the Search field. Click it to open it. Enter in the system name of the computer that you want to connect to. Enter in the user name that you are connecting with. Click the “Show options” button to open the advanced options for your connection. You can use these options to tweak your connection to give you the best performance, as well as configure the sound and display. Click Connect to start connecting to the computer. When the connection is made, the other computer’s display will appear in a window on your computer. You can navigate Windows just like you normally would. 6. Open port 3389 to allow connections through the internet. If you want to be able to connect to your remote computer directly over the internet, without having to use a VPN, you will need to open port 3389 on the firewall of the computer you are connecting to. This will expose the Remote Desktop to the internet, meaning potentially anyone access it. For this reason, it is highly recommended that you have a very strong password. To find out how to open ports on your router, check out this guide. Once you open port 3389, you will be able to connect to the computer by entering its public (external) IP address. To find the public IP address, check out this guide. Remember, you will need the IP address of the computer you are connecting to. 7. Connect to your remote desktop with a smartphone or tablet. If you are running Windows 8 0r 8.1 Professional, you can connect to your remote desktop through the official Microsoft apps on iOS and Android. You will need to have Remote Desktop configured on your computer. Method 2. TeamViewer (Any) 1. Download TeamViewer. This is a free program for home users that allows you to quickly set up a remote connection between your computers. This programs is especially useful for Mac computers, as configuring native remote desktop connections is very tricky and potentially expensive. It is also useful for Mac-to-PC connections and vice versa. Select a download; there is an all-in-one complete version, or a special TeamViewer Host version for unattended access only. Besides TeamViewer, there are several other po[CENSORED]r programs available, such as LogMeIn, WebEX, LapLink, RealVNC, and GoToMyPC. 2. Install TeamViewer on the remote computer. When you start the installer, you will be asked if you want to Install or Run TeamViewer. Select Install to configure TeamViewer on the computer, allowing you to connect to it anytime. Check the “Show advanced settings” box. Select “personal/non-commerical use”. Read and accept the license agreement. 3. Configure TeamViewer for later remote connections. Make sure “Yes” is checked before continuing the installation. TeamViewer will be configured so that you can connect to it from any computer over the internet. Make sure that “Full access” is checked so that you can access the computer remotely without having to approve it on the remote computer. 4. Start the “Unattended access” setup process. After installation is complete, the “Unattended access” wizard will start. Follow the steps laid out in the wizard to complete the setup. You will need to give your computer a name as well as a password. Make sure that the password is strong to prevent unwanted intruders. 5. Create a TeamViewer account. This will allow you to quickly see which of your remote computers are online and available to connect to. Once your account is created, you will see your computer appear on the list in TeamViewer. 6. Keep TeamViewer running. TeamViewer will need to be running in order to connect to that computer. TeamViewer runs in the background, and takes minimal system resources. 7. Connect to the computer remotely. Once TeamViewer is configured on the remote computer, you can connect to it from another device. You can do this by logging into the TeamViewer website and connecting through the browser, or by downloading and installing the TeamViewer program on that computer. You will need to log in and use your password to connect to the remote computer. Method 3. Chrome Remote Desktop (Any) 1. Install the Remote Desktop Chrome extension. You can find this in the Google Chrome web store, and it is a free download. Be sure to only install the extension from the Google Chrome team. You will need to install the Chrome extension on the computer you want to connect to and the computer you are connecting from. You can install the Chrome extension on Windows, Mac and Linux computers, and virtually any modern version can run it. 2. Enable remote access. On the computer that you want to connect to, open the Remote Desktop app that you installed in Chrome. Sign in with your Google account if you are not already, and then click the “Enable remote connections” button. 3. Create a PIN. As an extra layer of security, you can create a PIN that will be required whenever you start a connection. This will help protect your computer even if someone is able to compromise your Google account. 4. Install the components. Once you create your PIN, the remote connection software will be installed on the computer. You may need to accept these installations, depending on the security settings on your computer. 5. 6. Connect to the computer. On the computer you are using to connect with, open the Chrome Remote Desktop app. Click the “Get started” button and select the computer that you want to connect to. You will be asked for the PIN, and then you will be connected. You will only be able to choose computers that you have previously linked with your Google account. 7. Use the remote computer. Your remote computer’s display will be shown in your Google Chrome browser. You may experience a slight delay when using the remote computer, as commands need to be sent through the internet in order to reach it. Click the Disconnect button in the top menu to end the connection. Use the Send Keys button to send key commands to the remote computer, such as Ctrl + Alt + Del and Print Screen. 8. Share your screen temporarily. If you want to share your screen with someone on a temporary basis, such as for technical support, you can use the Remote Assistance option. Click the Share button on the Chrome Remote desktop main menu, and then copy the code that is displayed. Give this code to the person that is assisting you, and they will be able to connect through the Chrome Remote Desktop app on their computer.
  20. AMD has released an updated Radeon Software Crimson Edition driver, version 16.4.1. The highlight of this particular release is that it offer much improved performance in Quantum Break. Further goodies in the driver include the fixing of various frame rate capping issues, and some specific flickering screen problems in Hitman. Xbox One and Windows 10 exclusive game Quantum Break is out today and AMD wanted to make sure its users got the best experience from day one, by releasing this hotfix driver. In its own tests using the new driver, and a Radeon R9 Fury X graphics card, AMD managed to boost performance in Quantum Break by up to 35.76 per cent. Other highlights are said to be the driver's continued support for the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive. In terms of issues fixed with this latest driver release, there are two things of note. Firstly those who had been experiencing annoying flickering screen effects while playing Hitman in DirectX 11 mode (using high shadow settings) will be pleased to know that problem has been banished. Secondly, more generally, the frame rate capping issues in someDirectX 12 applications has been resolved. Plenty of known issues remain but hopefully, as they are listed, they are high on AMD's most wanted list of bug kills. Usefully for a number of issues, like crashes due to the AMD Gaming Evolved overlay, AMD has detailed workarounds for you. So if you have some issues that aren't addressed above it's worth a look at the release notes. Half way down that linked page you can find direct download links for the new AMD Radeon Software Crimson 16.4.1 drivers for both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7, or newer, systems. As regular HEXUS readers will know, Quantum Break's minimum requirements include the Windows 10 64-bit OS.
  21. Microsoft's Corporate VP of the Engineering Systems Team, Gabe Aul, has written a lengthy blog post covering all the new features, refinements and tweaks in the latest Windows 10 Insider Preview. The post coincided with the release of Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14316 to Windows Insiders in the fast ring. This new build features many of the things that will arrive in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update this summer. As announced last week at BUILD 2016, the latest insider preview will allow you to run native Bash on Ubuntu on Windows. This is enabled by turning on developer mode in settings and turning on the Windows Subsystem for Linux (Beta). If you are interested in this particular feature it is covered in more depth here. Further interesting, and rather intelligent, features spring from the new Cortana cross-device capabilities. In this OS build you will be able, for example, to get low battery notifications for your phone on your PC, use Find my phone/Ring my phone from any of your devices, and quickly and simply share maps across devices. Microsoft Edge extensions were recently announced and this OS build has a couple for you to try out – the Pin It Button and OneNote Clipper. The Reddit Enhancement Suite, Mouse Gestures, and Microsoft Translator have all been updated too. A dark mode has been added to the personalisation colour settings. I preferred this mode on my Windows Phone so it's nice to see it come to PCs. However Microsoft says that UWP apps that control their own theme settings won't actually go dark once the mode is switched on. There are further colour customisation options for Start, the taskbar, and the Action Centre. On the topic of the Action Centre, this too has been improved with user able to choose which app notifications should be shown first and the ability to limit the number of visible notifications per app (default is now three). Users just tap to expand the notifications they are interested in. There are yet more new features such as a new Connect App to make Continuum more flexible and less reliant on hardware dongles, more emojis, the Skype UWP preview app, Virtual Desktop improvements, an improved update progress experience, and updated Battery Settings and Battery Saving experience. For a full rundown of the numerous changes in this Insider Preview head over to Gabe Aul's post, on the Microsoft blog, where you can also read about bug fixes in this update and known issues.
  22. Adobe systems has issued an important patch for its Flash browser plugin software. As Reuters reports, Adobe has issued this patch to remedy a security flaw that made users vulnerable to drive-by ransomware attacks. This vulnerability was a so-called 0-day one, and has been exploited by a type of ransomware known as 'Cerber' since the end of March. Ransomware has grown in prominence in tech and general news headlines recently. Typically, once the ransomware malware files become active on your computer system, your personal folders, or even complete drives, can be encrypted. That usually leaves just two possibilities; either pay the attacker for the decryption key, or restore your files/drives from your well maintained backups. It's easy to understand that many will pay handsomely to get access to their files back, which may include important business documents and cherished family photos and videos. Trend Micro apparently warned Adobe about the Flash flaw allowing drive-by installations of the Cerber ransomware as far back as 31st March. Cerber is interesting as the malware includes speech reminding users and urging users to pay up to regain access to their files. Adobe's release notes concerning the Flash Player 21 update simply says that it contains "important bug fixes and security updates". You have to find the associated security bulletin to read about the 24 critical vulnerabilities fixed in this release. In these notes Adobe admits that "CVE-2016-1019 is being actively exploited on systems running Windows 10 and earlier with Flash Player version 20.0.0.306 and earlier". CVE-2016-1019 is a "type confusion vulnerability" that could lead to code execution. Adobe notes that those with auto-updates for Flash enabled should get the update soon. However that hadn't happened for me, so I headed over to Flash.com to grab the update direct. It was annoying to have to opt out of Adobe's optional offers, which I think of as Adobe monetising its software failures. Windows, Macintosh, Linux and ChromeOS users are all urged to update their Flash Player software.
