  2. Elden Ring was the most critically acclaimed game released in 2022, garnering countless awards that spanned various categories, including some related to the technical aspect of the game. Even so, I'd be hard-pressed to consider Elden Ring some sort of a technical masterpiece. While its art is top-notch, the game doesn't include any cutting-edge technologies, and its default look is far from the most impressive game we've ever seen. On PC, there are texture mods and other user-made graphics enhancements and tweaks, but they can only go so far. RELATED STORY Alessio Palumbo Elden Ring RT Update Out Now, Though It Doesn’t Look Great That's why I had been eagerly anticipating the ray tracing update. Bandai Namco first announced that Elden Ring would be updated with ray tracing support months before launch. Then, there were no more official news on the matter (although dataminers had spotted the addition of related strings that hinted at an imminent release) until ray tracing was at last added to Elden Ring with this week's 1.09 patch. So, did FromSoftware manage to elevate the game's visuals to new heights? Yes and no. It's not a game-changing difference, which is hardly surprising since FromSoftware only elected to implement ray traced shadows and ambient occlusion. While it is understandable that the developers wouldn't want to go into adding ray traced global illumination since it would have required re-authoring the game's entire lighting, they could have at least added ray traced reflections, too. For that, we have the precedent of additions to an existing game and a live service one at that (Grand Theft Auto V on current-generation consoles). Going back to Elden Ring, the impact of ray tracing (set to max on PC) varies between scenes, which is why I've captured several, both indoors and outdoors, near the beginning of the game. Generally, the ray tracing implementation improves the accuracy of shadows, making objects like rocks or foliage look more grounded and realistic. It can be noticeable, though it is hardly a night-and-day difference. Aesthetically, it tends to make the visuals darker than the non-ray traced option. Speaking of performance, outdoor scenes are a lot more taxing. In this small cave, for example, max ray tracing costs 29 FPS (on the GeForce RTX 4090, the mightiest graphics card available, at 4K resolution), a 24% decrease compared to ray tracing set to off. RT ON RT OFF As soon as we step out of the cave, the performance cost is much larger. Max ray tracing runs at 53 FPS, while ray tracing off is up to 99 FPS. The FPS is nearly halved here, though the visual improvement with the foliage is quite visible. Also, note the greatly improved shadowing on the player character's cloak. link: https://wccftech.com/elden-ring-ray-tracing-update-pc-test-improved-but-at-what-cost/

  4. Like many websites, we publish a daily hint and answer for Wordle(opens in new tab). We do this because every single day Wordle players search for a hint and answer to that day's Wordle puzzle. To be blunt about it: a lot of people cheat at Wordle. But I don't think people cheat just so they don't have to do the puzzle themselves—what would even be the point of playing Wordle every day if you were just going to look up the answer? I'm pretty sure that when people cheat at Wordle it's just to maintain their streaks. Wordle keeps track of how many times you've played, what percentage of games you've won, along with your current streak. If you miss one, that streak is reset to zero, which can be a pretty big blow if you're gone for weeks or even months without missing a single word. So, I get it. You're down to your final guess, and the grid is showing one of those bastard words like CA_ER, which could be CAPER or CABER or CATER or maybe ever CAGER. Your 71-day streak is on the line. Screw it! You take a little peek at the answer, and you don't have to suffer the indignity of starting your streak over from nil. During her talk, Bell revealed what the toughest Wordle word has been to date. link: https://www.pcgamer.com/wordles-hardest-word-caused-60-of-players-to-break-their-streaks/

  6. Germany reached an agreement with the European Union on a landmark regulation that requires new cars to be carbon neutral by 2035, resolving a dispute that threatened to undermine the bloc's ambitious blueprint to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The agreement, which will allow some combustion engines beyond 2035, was quickly condemned by opponents. The bloc and its largest economy had been at odds over the planned 2035 phase-out of CO2-emitting cars, but leaders signaled in recent days that they were close to a resolution. Germany had wanted assurances that new combustion engine cars can be sold beyond the deadline if they run on e-fuels -- a request supported by Porsche and other parts of Germany's powerful car industry. "We have found an agreement with Germany on the future use of e-fuels in cars," Frans Timmermans, head of EU climate policy, said on Twitter. German Transport Minister Volker Wissing said "the way is clear" with the agreement reached late Friday. "Vehicles with internal combustion engines can still be newly registered after 2035 if they fill up exclusively with CO2-neutral fuels," he said in a post on Twitter. READ MORE The deal means that Germany can formally approve an agreement reached in October that requires new cars to be zero-emissions, a key pillar in the EU's plans to reach climate neutrality by 2050. A vote this month, which was expected to be a simple procedure, was delayed due to objections from Wissing's pro-business FDP party, the junior member of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's governing alliance. The deal with Germany doesn't change the text of the regulation that was agreed between representatives of member states and the European Parliament last year. After ministers sign off on it, the commission will provide more details on the next steps to implement the provision on e-fuels, according to an EU official. That vote, which is now expected to take place on Tuesday when energy ministers meet in Brussels, should pass with Germany's backing as the countries opposing will be unable to reach a sufficient enough minority to block the progress. Italy wanted further assurances, including how cars using biofuels could also be exempted. "The battle on tech neutrality has been won, which is the precondition for the recognition of biofuels," Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni told reporters Friday after a summit of EU leaders. "We are also showing that biofuels are zero-emission, hence there's no need to go into the technical details. If the technology hits the target, then you can use it." A scheduled review in 2026 on how the bloc was progressing on zero-emission vehicles was seen as too late for some of the country's automakers. But environmental activists were angered by Germany's decision to hold up the emissions plan and warned against changes that could distract from progress toward broader use of electric and other zero-emission vehicles. Benjamin Stephan of Greenpeace said the deal was a setback for climate protection. "This stinky compromise undermines climate protection in transport, and it harms Europe," he said. It dilutes the needed focus of the auto industry on efficient electromobility, he said. Pascal Canfin, the head of the European Parliament's environment committee, called on the commission to make sure the upcoming rules on e-fuels respect the agreement reached last year on car-emissions standards. Even though the parliament's role in the process going forward is limited, it could still block the future regulation. "The automotive sector has wholeheartedly embraced electric cars, rendering the previous debate on the matter absurd and damaging Germany's credibility," Michael Bloss, a German Green member of the European Parliament, said Saturday. "It is now time to make reparations." link : https://europe.autonews.com/environmentemissions/eu-germany-reach-car-emissions-deal-includes-e-fuels
  7. A cat caught up in an explosion has been found alive almost a week after it went missing. A 68-year-old man died in the suspected gas blast which damaged several houses in Morriston, Swansea on Monday. Three others were injured, including the missing animal's owner Claire Griffiths-Bennett and her son. While one of the family's cats was rescued from the rubble soon afterwards, ragdoll Teddy's whereabouts remained unknown. But on Sunday, the RSPCA's Llys Nini animal centre said: "Teddy has been caught!" Teddy being reunited with owner Claire IMAGE SOURCE,RSPCA LLYS NINI Image caption, Teddy was reunited with owner Claire (right) on Sunday It is believed Teddy had been living in the remains of the family home. The centre said Ms Griffiths-Bennett had been sitting next to the animal at the time of the blast. There were concerns he may not have survived, but on Tuesday he was spotted by Swansea Cats Protection, Llys Nini and South Wales Police. Llys Nini's Sally Hyman said they saw him "sitting on a pile of rubble". Ms Hyman said Teddy was looking at her and washing, but it was not until Sunday that they managed to catch him. She said: "He was big, fluffy and dirty but alive and well. Maybe he was hiding in the debris in the house." There were concerns the property would be demolished with Teddy inside. "So today [Sunday] was make or break," Ms Hyman added. In a Facebook post, the animal centre said: "Claire was released from hospital on Sunday and went straight to the remains of the house to see if Teddy would respond to her whistle. "However on arrival she was greeted with the news that Teddy had, just at that moment, been trapped. "There were tears all around." Teddy was described as "dusty" and "cross", but apparently unharmed. link: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-65009394
  8. Maria Mayer” and “Ludwig Gisch,” two suspects arrested in Slovenia and accused of spying for Russia in January, allegedly worked for Russia’s foreign intelligence service (SVR), the Guardian reported, citing anonymous sources. According to the report, both are Russian citizens and were elite Russian spies. Security services around the European Union have cracked down on alleged Russian spies performing in the wake of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Western countries have expelled hundreds of people working across Europe under diplomatic cover. According to the report, in informal conversations after the arrests of “Mayer” and “Gisch,” Russia quickly admitted that the two arrested in Slovenia were intelligence officers. The sources said that Russian and Western countries are discussing exchanging them for a person or people currently in custody in Russia. “Gisch” reportedly used an Argentinian passport. On March 21, Slovenia’s Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon told reporters that the arrested couple were Russian citizens rather than Argentinians. link : https://kyivindependent.com/news-feed/guardian-russian-spies-detained-in-slovenia-allegedly-worked-for-russias-foreign-intelligence
  9. Yesterday, during the PAX East 2023 Digital Showcase, indie Chinese developer Studio Surgical Scalpels and publisher Skystone Games announced the Steam Early Access launch date of the zero-G first-person shooter Boundary. This competitive multiplayer game first appeared on our radar at Gamescom 2019, where Chris Wray tried a demo. At that time, the developers were targeting an early 2020 release on PlayStation 4 with PC following later. In January 2020, Boundary made the news thanks to an RTX technical demo that won NVIDIA China's DXR Spotlight competition. A few months later, we interviewed CEO and Co-Founder Frank Mingbo Li to learn more about the game's features and mechanics. Later in 2020, Studio Surgical Scalpels even released a benchmark (still available on Steam) featuring RTX and NVIDIA DLSS. After that, the game went dark for quite a while, only resurfacing for occasional and brief test weekends. With the early access release date at last in sight, we had another chance to speak with Frank Mingbo Li. Our lengthy conversation spanned the reasons behind the delays, the features and content available on April 13th, details on the Battle Pass and post-launch roadmap, the console plans, and the technical changes on PC (RTX and DLSS have been removed, at least temporarily, while FSR 2 and XeSS are supported). Boundary was originally scheduled to launch nearly three years ago. What happened? Why was the game delayed for such a long time? Three years ago, our main development platform for Boundary was PlayStation 4, but COVID-19 changed everything. We were forced to start working from home, and the transition was chaotic. Particularly in the early stages, the development team had no experience with remote work, and it took a considerable amount of time to establish this workflow. To make matters worse, the team found that developing the PlayStation version was exceptionally challenging in a remote work environment, and many tasks could not be completed. So we ultimately decided to switch the main platform to PC. We thought the pandemic might last only six months to a year, but it ended up lasting for three years. During this time, the next generation of consoles was also released. When we were finally able to return to the office, we started developing the PS5 version. But as you can imagine, this was a huge challenge for a studio's first project as an independent game development studio. Due to the change in development direction, some members left the team for various reasons. There are almost no developers in the Chinese market who are proficient in developing for consoles, PC, and UE4 at the same time. We found many enthusiastic developers with limited development experience, but it takes a lot of time to become a team that can develop high-quality games. We went through a lot of twists and turns over the entire three years, and eventually, we focused mainly on the PC version. Although we have limited development resources, we rarely compromise on many aspects of game quality and gameplay. This is another reason why it took us so long. When we moved to PC, we further improved the overall quality of the game's visual presentation. We think that developing for PC first has actually helped us make a better game, and we’re thrilled to say that we’re still planning on bringing Boundary to consoles too. What changes have been made to Boundary over the past three years? I know there have occasional tests on Steam, including one last month. What kind of feedback did you incorporate from testers? Compared with three years ago, the current game is quite different in the completeness of features and the degree of polishing of details. In the test two years ago, we found some very big problems. For example, back then, the game lacked enough content, it is difficult for players to gain a sense of growth, the playing experience is monotonous, and players will lose interest fast. Every shooter these days NEEDS that hook to keep players coming back. We were also plagued by issues related to the game's level design and balance. We didn’t have any real production-grade back-end server architecture, and our servers were always on the verge of struggling and catching fire and crashing and burning. At the same time, we lacked a friend system, we didn't have a mechanism to play with friends in a party, we didn't have a real matchmaking mechanism, and our interactions were a bit confusing, and players often couldn't find the options they wanted to adjust. In the previous development stages, we felt that bug fixing and detail polishing became more and more difficult because of the architecture. Basically, a few years back - what we were facing at the time was a game that had an amazing first impression but lacked any real lasting power. In the past two years, we have carried out a major overhaul of the game. The changes involved operations, combat shooting, and the overall game cycle. We have established a network service system that’s both stable and efficient. We optimized CPU usage, optimized network, and server deployment (dynamic expansion of loads and other features). We’ve included player records, a friends system, team formation, voice communication, and matchmaking are all now being finalized, optimized, and debugged for launch. At the front end, we restructured the product. We redesigned and programmed the weapon system and shooting mechanics, material and penetration system, and the role partition injury mechanism. We referenced and absorbed the new technologies and designs of the industry in the past two years. Boundary plays so much better these days compared to when we first planned to launch - in a lot of ways, I’m very glad we were forced to delay the launch around COVID. During this process, we are also constantly conducting testing and user research, and the feedback we have collected has also been corrected and revised in batches in the new version. We are very excited about the new version that will be brought to players and we sincerely hope you all can enjoy the fun of space zero-gravity combat. In the meantime, we're always listening to further feedback and stand ready to fix any issues we find. Even though we’re calling this “Early Access”, we’re treating Boundary as a live game, and we’ll be rolling out content updates, QOL fixes, and balance changes throughout the months leading up to the 1.0 launch.
  10. Tower of Fantasy, the open-world RPG, has been successfully running for quite a while now. They have been trying to pump out a wide variety of new content in every patch update. They have currently released about 13 Limited Simulacrums and their Weapons as of now in Version 2.3. With the knowledge that the CN version of Tower of Fantasy added some of the old characters into the Standard Banner, the global players have been eagerly waiting for that decision to be implemented in the Global version soon. And it seems like Hotta Studio will be doing just that after the version 2.5 update. Four limited characters to enter the Standard Banner after Tower of Fantasy version 2.5 Tower of Fantasy posted a new Developer’s Report where the developers of the game talk and answer some of the player’s questions and feedback that they have provided to improve the gaming experience. In the Dev Report, they answered one of the questions that pertain to some of the Simulacrums being added onto the Standard Weapon Order. linnk : https://gamingonphone.com/news/tower-of-fantasy-is-adding-multiple-characters-to-the-standard-banner-after-the-2-5-update/
  11. Elden Ring got an update today(opens in new tab), and things are getting downright illuminated in The Lands Between. The 1.09 patch brings a slate of bug fixes and makes all sorts of tweaks to Elden Ring's weapons and combat, but the headline item here is that the game is finally getting ray tracing support. There's just one problem: You probably won't want to actually use it. You can go switch ray tracing on in Elden Ring's graphics menu, but what you won't find there is a toggle for Nvidia DLSS or AMD FSR support, the miraculous frame generation tech that lets you maintain a playable framerate even with taxing graphical gewgaws turned on. That means actually activating ray tracing has the potential to slow your game to a slideshow, especially at high resolutions. That's probably why FromSoft's minimum and recommended specs for Elden Ring's new ray tracing mode both suggest you play the game at 1080p: Any higher and you'd begin to sacrifice too many frames. Sponsored Links If you own a mouse, you will never turn off your computer again. Combat Siege To be fair, that's FromSoft's recommendation for builds based around Nvidia 30-series and AMD 6000-series GPUs. I suspect players using bleeding edge 40- and 7000-series graphics cards could probably get away with dialling their resolution up a bit. But considering that barely anyone is using those cards yet(opens in new tab), most of us are gonna have to settle one way or another. link : https://www.pcgamer.com/elden-ring-just-got-ray-tracing-but-you-might-not-want-to-use-it/
