  1. The New Role Of The Software Quality Architect Is there business value for the organization in the roles of testing and quality assurance? This question is becoming more relevant today as companies look for ways to streamline their development processes to release products faster, and "old fashioned" testing practices frequently serve only as unneeded hurdles slowing the team down. Thriving in today's fast-moving environment. You can open any industry report and see the adoption of DevOps and Agile methodologies increasing steadily across most industries and sectors. At the same time, we also see that both the service providers as well as their consumers are choosing to move to SaaS and mobile offerings for their personal and professional applications and services. Another loosely related fact is that most products today have become extremely replaceable. To give you a personal example, it takes my kids less than a minute to switch from Netflix to Amazon Prime and then to YouTube when looking for something to watch, just as it takes me about three minutes to switch from Uber to Lyft if I can't find a quick ride home. The same behavior is also apparent around the products and applications we use in our work-related tasks, with the barriers for moving being so low that, for most of us, they stopped existing at all. MORE FOR YOU Digital Transformation And Cybersecurity During Covid-19 VCISO: A Pragmatic Path To Cybersecurity In Pandemic Times And Beyond Continuous Intelligence Is The Way To Smaller Data Long gone are the days when companies would choose a system and stick to it for 10 or 20 years. Today, buying decisions are made with a three- to five-year usage forecast in mind. How do organizations survive and even thrive in this dynamic and hypercompetitive environment? They obviously invest many resources trying to keep ahead of their competition. Moreover, when looking at those companies making waves above their rivals, we see that a big part of their strategy relies on modeling how their users work and having a complete understanding of what makes them increase and decrease their usage patterns within the applications. We don't live in the age of large releases anymore. No longer are features only released once they're completed and finished, and we're no longer waiting for large versions and updates to be released only once every six or 12 months. The reality of today's SaaS and DevOps ecosystems is one where we need to work based on a strategy of releasing minimum viable products (MVPs) to our customers, with the aim of understanding how real users react to the new features and changes and only then continuing to invest resources in the functionality around these validated ideas. A similar approach is true for bugs, where we should find and fix only those issues that are critical and would cause real damages before releasing our products — and then have the monitoring and bug-fixing capabilities required to make additional fixes once these issues are found in production. As mentioned by Dr. Mik Kersten in his book Project to Product, companies invest their time in either creating new features, fixing defects, ensuring security or closing technical debt. If we look at the average age of S&P 500-listed companies dropping from 60 to 20 since the 1950s, we can see that many customers, with their relatively low brand loyalty and their replacement options, should appreciate a company that releases more functionality and fixes issues faster over those that are more stable but with less innovation in their functionality. Refocusing the aim of testing. If we look back 10 years, the good testers in a team were the ones who brought up bugs that were relevant to our users. They would come up with realistic scenarios and not waste time on border cases with only theoretical repercussions and no business value. This is no different today. The job of a tester is to provide business value by finding the issues that the team needs to solve before the product is deployed to production while understanding which areas and potential bugs are better left to be fixed only after they materialize in the real world. The job of the tester is also to make sure the organization has the needed tools to do this, to detect issues as they happen and then to solve them quickly and with minimum disruption. Quality past the bugs and fixes. Returning to the idea of understanding how users work with a product and providing the functionality that will encourage them to use and recommend it more, we need to understand that fitness-for-use and alignment-with-needs are now seen by many customers as quality attributes, sometimes above stability and even lack of issues in the product. In the end, the biggest factor determining whether a user likes our product or moves to a competitor is if they feel we are giving them what they need. The best way of understanding this is by measuring how users are working with the system. We need to analyze what features they use and what features they don't, discover patterns and find the value streams within the system. Then, we need to enhance those value streams and either fix or drop the areas that are not providing value to our users. Today, the job of the quality assurance person in a team has to encompass this new measurement of product quality. They must provide measurable proof and visibility into what users do with the system and how they do it, as well as demonstrate or refute the hypothesis of how a new feature increases the value generated to our users before we continue investing resources into it. This is the way by which the new role of the quality assurance architect — that person we used to call the tester — can provide business value to the organization. Not only do they ensure critical bugs are found before we release our products, but they also help the whole organization understand the value we are generating for our customers so that we can invest in the areas where we increase this value. This allows us to avoid pouring resources into bottomless pits that will not generate any value to our business.
  2. Under the skin: the in-car audio technology your ears will love Active noise control might seem like a nice-to-have rather than a must-have, but it’s becoming as significant a part of vehicle architectures as the metals and plastics used to create them. Active noise-cancellation systems, which detect unwanted noise and cancel it with signals broadcast through the car’s audio system, have now become fairly commonplace on premium cars. As well as making the driving experience more relaxing, active noise cancellation systems have a significant role to play in reducing vehicle weight by cancelling noise that would otherwise be controlled using hefty passive noise-damping materials. Early noise-cancellation systems could tackle fairly narrow frequency ranges and have been good at dealing with predictable noise like that created by engine vibration. But more random sound, such as wind or road noise, is much harder to deal with. Israeli firm Silentium has come up with a new software package called Active Acoustics, a facet of which is broadband active road noise cancellation. Drawing on signals generated by microphones and sensors to measure suspension movement, the system has recently been introduced by Jaguar Land Rover on the Jaguar F-Pace, Jaguar XF and Range Rover Velar, and it can take noise over a wide range of frequencies, from 20Hz to 1kHz (1000Hz). Beyond road noise, the Active Acoustics software can be configured to take out a range of unwanted sound from various sources, leaving only the desirable sound. The system can also be used to profile noise, shaping the noise spectrum to a certain level inside the cabin that’s pleasant, comfortable and safe. In that role, Active Acoustics uses the same methods as active noise-cancellation, such as software, transducers and computing power to sense the noises that need to be mani[CENSORED]ted. The noise-shaping technology can add noises that aren’t there but are desirable or emphasise sound that a driver wants to pay more attention to, like telephony, driver alert signals and external sounds entering the cabin, such as ambulance and police car sirens. Active Acoustics is still an evolving technology, though, with the eventual goal of mani[CENSORED]ting every sound in the cabin, especially speech, which is one of the hardest sounds to modify. Although not every sound can be controlled, Silentium is already able to create a ‘quiet bubble’ in space around each occupant’s head. The bubble is a spherical space about 330mm in diameter in which the sound volume and quality can be individually controlled. One of the first uses of the Active Acoustics bubble was active road noise cancellation, but it’s likely to become even more relevant to EVs, where road noise is no longer masked to some extent by engine noise. Wind noise cancellation using the same techniques is also under development. Personalised audio within each bubble, inaudible to the other occupants in the car, is expected to be ready for production in the next two to three years. Tech firm NAWA’s vertically aligned carbon nanotubes (VACNT) technology, which can be used to create lithium ion battery electrodes that charge and discharge faster, is taking the same approach to making carbonfibre structures stronger with VACNT-based material called NawaStitch. It comprises a thin film containing trillions of carbon nanotubes set between layers of carbonfibre cloth making them less likely to separate in an impact. NAWA claims its “nano-Velcro” increases shear strength of carbonfibre by 100 times.
  3. Covid: Man jailed for Scotland-Isle of Man water scooter crossing A man who crossed the Irish Sea from Scotland to the Isle of Man "on a Jet Ski" to visit his girlfriend has been jailed for breaching Covid-19 laws. Douglas Courthouse heard 28-year-old Dale McLaughlan took four-and-a-half hours to travel from the Isle of Whithorn to Ramsey on Friday. McLaughlan, from North Ayrshire, made the crossing despite having never driven a water scooter before. He admitted arriving unlawfully on the island and was jailed for four weeks. Under the island's current laws, only non-residents given special permission are allowed to enter the Isle of Man. McLaughlan, of Warrix Avenue in Irvine, was previously given permission to work as a roofer on the island for four weeks in September and, after isolating for 14 days, met his girlfriend on a night out. The court heard his subsequent applications to return had been rejected. 'Very real risk' Prosecutors said the 28-year-old bought the vehicle and set off on the journey of about 25 miles (40km), which he had expected to take 40 minutes. After he arrived in Ramsey at about 13:00 GMT, he walked another 15 miles (25km) to his girlfriend's home in Douglas, who believed he had been on the island working for several weeks, the court was told. The following afternoon, he gave a police officer her address as his own and that evening, the couple went to two busy nightclubs. Following identification checks, police arrested him on Sunday evening. In mitigation, the 28-year-old's defence advocate said he suffered from depression and was not coping with being unable to see his partner. Sentencing him, Deputy High Bailiff Christopher Arrowsmith said McLaughlan had made a "deliberate and intentional attempt to circumnavigate" the border restrictions, potentially putting the community at risk. He said the "carefully planned" journey had also put the 28-year-old "at very real risk" of harm. Speaking after the hearing, a government spokesman said following an investigation, public health officials were "satisfied" there was "no wider risk to the public".
  4. Fall Guys Season 3 Rewards The Most Competitive Players Fall Guys: Season 3 is bringing more than just new levels to the battle royale. The new season also adds crown ranks, a ranking system that focuses on how much players win. Rewards for winning more include new cosmetics like golden costumes. "The more crowns you grab, the higher your crown rank rises," reads a post on the PlayStation Blog that revealed the new feature. "And with it, players will unlock a world of curious and highly desirable rewards, including exclusive colors and patterns to leave other players in no doubt of your commitment to the bean cause." One of the most coveted rewards will be golden variants for costumes from previous seasons, like the knight and hot dog outfits. Mediatonic didn't clarify how much work it would be to unlock these costumes, but the studio did say they were the most "prestigious addition(s)" to the game yet. This new addition will work alongside the regular battle pass, giving players multiple avenues to unlock rewards like name plates, titles, costumes, and emotes. The ranking can be seen at the bottom of the post-match rewards screen. Fall Guys' new season begins on December 15. It brings seven new mini-games, like Ringus Dingus and and Thin Ice, alongside a winter theme with new music, level variants, and other content to the game show battle royale. As spotted by VGC, Reddit users on the Cyberpunk page have reported receiving full refunds for digital versions of the game, even if they went past the two-hour maximum playtime that is typically enforced. There is no quick and easy way to do this, with you still needing to call PlayStation's customer service. One user said Sony is itself complaining to CD Projekt Red about the game's issues.
  5. Core i5-11400 and i9-11900K Rocket Lake CPUs Show Up in New Benchmarks Leaks for Intel's upcoming Core i5-11400 and Core i9-11900K Rocket Lake CPUs are starting to show up, including a few benchmarks. APISAK Tweeted two new benchmarks, one showcasing the i9-11900K running on an RTX 2080 Ti in an Ashes of the Singularity run, and a SiSoftware benchmark result has appeared for the Core i5-11400. In the Ashes of the Singularity run, the Intel Core i9-11900K, with a base clock of 3.5ghz, scored 6400 points in the benchmark, with an average CPU frame rate of 64 fps. This score seems incredibly low for Intel's next-gen flagship. For perspective, you can find plenty of Core i7-9700K results with the same settings and GPU with nearly double the frame rates. Presumably, this means the 11900K is an engineering sample and isn't running beyond its base clock. But at least we now know that 11900K samples are in the testing phase, implying that Intel's Rocket Lake chips should be getting close to launch. For the Core i5-11400, we now know this chip rocks six cores and 12 threads, plus a base clock of 2.6GHz and a maximum turbo frequency of 4.4Ghz, not bad for what should be Intel's lowest-end Core i5 model. The benchmark used is SiSoftware's Multi-Media workload, and the 11400 came with a score of 646.07Mpix/s. Intel's Rocket Lake processors will be built on the upcoming Cypress Cove core architecture, which is simply Intel's 10nm Sunny cove cores backported to the 14nm node. So yes, for one final time (we hope), Intel is sticking with its 14nm process. But, Intel seems to be focusing entirely on IPC performance this time around, with the i9-11900K only having eight cores and 16 threads, a strange occurrence when the Core i9-10900K came with ten cores and 20 threads. The Core i5 series still has six cores and hyperthreading which is the same as the 10th gen Core i5s. That said, it remains a mystery if the Rocket Lake Core i7s will retain hyperthreading or not, with the 11900K going back down to eight cores. Either way, perhaps Intel can regain enough per-core performance to make up for the core deficit compared to AMD's Zen 2 and Zen 3 CPUs.
  6. Troy Carter and Suzy Ryoo’s music tech startup Q&A launches software group, Venice Innovation Labs Q&A, a startup developing tech for the music industry co-founded by industry insiders Troy Carter (Lady Gaga’s first manager) and Suzy Ryoo (Carter’s longtime collaborator), has launched a new suite of software products through a division called Venice Innovation Labs. The new tools are designed to help record labels beta test songs, manage artists, and distribute music easily and efficiently, the company said in a statement. The first releases from the new division are StreamRate, which provides sentiment analysis of new songs before they’re released; and Venice For Labels, which tracks splits and payments among different artists, manages and monitors music distribution, and helps labels keep track of their rosters. The company is also providing a human touch through a strategic marketing and advisory “Premium Services” team led by Ray Kurzeka in North America and Matt Ott in the UK. “Technology is rapidly changing the way music is consumed, yet our industry’s infrastructure remains underserved. We’ve been quietly building beautiful and intuitive tools that labels will love, as well as services that move the needle. Our vision is to create an authentic community to empower brilliant artists and the labels that support them daily,” said Suzy Ryoo, President of Q&A. I think for a lot of us in tech, we’re a bit stuck. On one hand, these technologies have produced jarring amounts of wealth in the tech industry, but they have also caused a large number of harms. What do we do next? Let me start by saying that the general framework of the solution is about what I call the four levers: money, code, norms and laws. Money is the business models, which create the incentives for how the advertisers on the platforms and the users behave. Code is how we design the platforms and the algorithms underlying the platforms, which I go into in great detail. Norms are how we adopt, appropriate and use the technology. And obviously, laws are regulation. In terms of solutions, I think the entry ticket for solving the social media crisis is creating competition in the social media economy. Platforms that lack competition don’t have any incentive to change away from the attention economy and their engagement-driven business models, nor do they have any real incentive to clean up their negative externalities in our information ecosystem, whether it’s hate speech or misinformation or mani[CENSORED]tion. Now, when I say competition, the first thing on everyone’s mind is always, “Oh, you mean break up Facebook.” But the point I make in the book — and I take a very clear stance on this — is that breaking up Facebook in this economy doesn’t solve the problem. This economy runs on network effects. The value of these platforms is a function of the number of users on the platform. Economies that run on network effects tend toward concentration and monopoly. So, if you break up Facebook, it’s just going to tip the next Facebook-like company into market dominance. What we really need is structural reform of the social media economy, and that involves social network portability, data portability and interoperability legislation. Let me push back on this a bit though. Terms like “data portability” always sound nice as a solution, but have we ever effectively used this tool to open a market? This isn’t the first time that we’ve done this. During the AOL-Time Warner merger, we forced AOL’s AIM product to become interoperable with Yahoo Messenger and MSN Messenger. And it went from a 65% market share to a 59% market share one year later, down to like 50%, then it ceded the entire market to new entrants three years later. Another good analogy is number portability in the cell phone market. It used to be that you couldn’t take your cell phone number with you when you switched from one cell phone provider to another, and then we legislated that they had to let you take your number with you. That was akin to a social network at the time, because all of your friends knew to call you at that number. Research has shown that number portability created about $880 million of consumer surplus every quarter for years and years after it was instituted in Europe, and it created a lot of competition. We should have something very similar in social networks, around social network portability and data portability, so that we could create competition. Now, if you break up Facebook after these kinds of structural reforms to the market, that’s a different question, but breaking up Facebook without structural reforms to the market economy is like putting a Band-Aid on a tumor. It’s not going to solve the underlying lack of competition that the social media economy has.
  7. My life in 12 cars: McLaren Automotive boss Mike Flewitt Mike Flewitt, boss of McLaren Automotive since 2013, is a rarity among car company CEOs as an instinctive and passionate lover of cars both at work and when his time is his own. Many contemporaries seek the ‘car guy’ label, but few can justify it to the extent that Flewitt does, reading and researching car stuff for fun, racing his classic Lotus collection on weekends or supporting his wife Mia’s ever-more remarkable progress to the top step of the podium in the British GT Championship. It wasn’t always like that. Nobody in Liverpool-born Flewitt’s family had any special love of cars. His father was an academic and his mother a teacher. Neither of his siblings (the elder brother who is now a judge and the younger sister who got into teaching) showed much automotive interest. Mike, although always mechanically interested as a child, was more likely to be fettling bicycles than dreaming of cars like many of his contemporaries. But a saffron-yellow Triumph Herald changed all that. Young Flewitt was working in a local sports shop to earn pocket money and unexpectedly came into a £200 insurance payout when his best bicycle was stolen. To replace the bike, he bought the Herald for £250 from a lady who also worked in the sports shop – because it seemed “kinda cool”. An Austin-Healey Sprite Mk4 would have been even cooler still, he recalls, but a teenager’s insurance premiums would have cost more than the car. Still, the Herald played the key role of getting Flewitt into cars. “I absolutely loved that car,” he says. “It was pretty decent to drive and dead easy to work on because of the separate chassis and the way its whole front body section lifted away. I enjoyed solving the sort of problems you could see and touch – still do. I had an extremely oily Haynes manual that I used to follow religiously. Working on that Herald taught me to love cars, and now they’re my whole life.” The Herald took 19-year-old Flewitt off to the University of Liverpool to study economics, but he soon found the experience “lacked relevance” so after a year he started work in the Ford factory at Halewood, 10 minutes from home, at first fitting rear parcel shelves on the production line. Soon he was accepted as a technical apprentice, which involved regular trips to Ford HQ in Essex plus college training on day release. That set him on a 12-year Ford journey from trainee through foreman, supervisor and manufacturing engineer (he began studying again at the University of Salford in his late twenties) to area manager. Early in his Ford phase, Flewitt developed what would become a lifelong love of the Lotus marque, aided initially by the launch of the magazine Practical Classics and by a well-thumbed Chris Harvey book on the Elan (he still has it). What would become a lifelong itch to know more soon led to more reading; he became captivated by the unique aura of Lotus founder Colin Chapman. “He was an inspired engineer, a great leader-businessman and a brilliant driver,” says Flewitt, “much the same as Bruce McLaren was. These days, those would be three distinct jobs, but these guys managed to do them all.” Flewitt also fell under the spell of the incomparable Jim Clark, whose ability behind the wheel was so immense and so natural that the shy Scot simply couldn’t understand why everyone couldn’t do it. It seemed natural that the Herald should give way (via a Mini) to three years’ ownership of an old Lotus Elan +2S 130/5, yellow with a metalflake yellow top. Flewitt’s Ford phase ended in the mid-1990s, when he took a job with Rolls-Royce in Crewe, tasked with revolutionising the manufacturing system for the forthcoming Silver Seraph (and Bentley Mulsanne Turbo). He made such a good job of it that he was promoted rapidly to production director – and that new prominence also brought an offer for him to run his own carmaking operation, the revolutionary Autonova business set up to build the Volvo C70 Coupé and Convertible at Uddevalla in Sweden. The business was jointly owned by Volvo and Tom Walkinshaw of TWR fame, and Flewitt grabbed it with both hands. The “life-changer” for him was that he met his wife there; she had started as a line worker, trained as a manufacturing engineer and landed a key production role. “We made a good car,” recalls Flewitt, “a decent, comfortable kind of GT built off the V70 platform. We had some early problems, but volume eventually reached a healthy 15,000 a year. We owned two, first a Coupé and then a Convertible after it was launched late in 1999.”
  8. Boy and man arrested after teenager found dead in Lincolnshire A 14-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man have been arrested on suspicion of murdering a teenager found dead in Lincolnshire. The boy was discovered on a patch of common land behind Alcorn Green in Fishtoft, near Boston on Saturday. Police said final identification was yet to take place, but it was believed he was of secondary school age. Det Supt Martyn Parker said: "This is a devastating incident in which a young boy has lost his life." Police have appealed for anyone with external facing CCTV covering the junction of Freiston Road and Woodthorpe Avenue between 20:00 GMT on Friday and 10:20 GMT on Saturday to get in touch. They also have asked for footage covering the entire length of Wing Drive and Alcorn Green between the same times. Det Supt Parker added: "This type of incident is not what we would expect to see within our communities. "I want to reassure the public that we will do all in our power to meticulously investigate the circumstances of this young boy's death." The body of a "young boy" has been discovered and two teens arrested for murder as an investigation was launched by Lincolnshire Police over the weekend. Officers were called to Alcorn Green in Fishtoft, near Boston in Lincolnshire, at around 10.22am on Saturday after the discovery was made, reports Lincolnshire Live. Two teens, aged 14 and 19, have been arrested on suspicion of murder. Police say final identification is yet to take place, but officials now believe the victim to be a boy of secondary school age. The two arrested teenagers remain in police custody. Detective Superintendent Martyn Parker said: "This is a devastating incident in which a young boy has lost his life. The impact will no doubt be felt greatly in the community and beyond. "This type of incident is not what we would expect to see within our communities. We are working with those affected to keep them informed and offer our support. "I want to reassure the public that we will do all in our power to meticulously investigate the circumstances of this young boy's death and we would urge anyone who has any information that could support this investigation to get in touch." The force are making a direct appeal for anyone with external facing CCTV covering the junction of Freiston Road and Woodthorpe Avenue, and the entire length of Wing Drive and Alcorn Green, for any footage between the hours 8 pm on December 11 and 10.22am on December 12, 2020.
  9. Genshin Impact Shows Off Huge Mountain Region In New Trailer Genshin Impact has attracted a massive following with its free-to-play take on the Zelda: Breath of the Wild formula, and it's getting even bigger with Version 1.2. The latest content update will add a new mountain region called Dragonspire, filled with dangerous enemies and extreme cold. The mountain is said to accrue more and more snow, which never melts. In the trailer, we see heroes go up against powerful ice monsters, some of whom resemble yetis. The mountain is located in the southern part of Mondstadt, and once you get into the frigid canyon, you can eventually find a cave filled with a pulsated orb that looks like it's somehow biologically connected to the mountain itself. Two new characters are introduced in the update--Albedo and Ganyu. The former relies on sword strikes and has a powerful area-of-effect attack to send enemies flying, while the latter is a powerful and deceptive magic user. There are also new weapons and new story quests to go along with the region, so it's a great time to jump back in if you have taken a break. Genshin Impact is available now for free on PC, Android, iOS, and PS4, with Nintendo Switch and PS5 versions coming in the future. It is grossing more money on a daily basis than almost any other mobile game, beating out the likes of PUBG Mobile and Pokemon Go. It's also one of the most successful games to ever come from a Chinese developer, and the continued content updates should help to keep players engaged for months or years to come. One specific example of this that Barbour gave was that the sniper rifle's Focus effect, which kicks in when the R2 button is gently squeezed, will now have a tension point that you'll need to apply pressure to for it to activate. Pushing past that tension point will allow you to feel the click of the trigger as you fire the weapon. IO Interactive also confirmed that Hitman 3 will feature full VR support, allowing you to explore every level in the game from a first-person view. If you own the previous two Hitman games, you'll also be able to play through locations such as Sapienza or Hawke's Bay in full VR. No PC VR options have been announced yet. You will also need to be running the PS4 version to get it to work. IO Interactive also revealed two editions of Hitman 3 that will be available. Pre-ordering the standard edition will unlock the Trinity Pack of cosmetic suits for Agent 47, while the Deluxe Edition has a wider selection of extra features. You'll be able to access the Trinity Pack, digital soundtracks for all three Hitman games, director commentary mission introduction, a digital artbook, deluxe Escalation missions, deluxe suits, and more items.
  10. How to Build an Alexa Speaker with Raspberry Pi In this tutorial, we’ll install Alexa Voice Service (AVS) on a Raspberry Pi 4 to essentially “make” our own Alexa speaker. We’ll nickname this project, “AlexaPi.” This project is possible thanks to the Amazon Alexa Voice Service (AVS) SDK. If you have your heart set on an Echo Show on Raspberry Pi (Alexa with a screen), we’ll cover a Raspberry Pi Alexa with a visual interface in a future article. Completing the steps in the article is a prerequisite to the AlexaPi with screen project. Why Build an Alexa when you could just buy one? If you don’t already own a Raspberry Pi, it is less expensive to buy an Amazon Echo device. As of this writing, a brand new Echo Dot sells for $24.99 on Amazon’s website which is $10 cheaper than the cheapest Raspberry Pi 4 and that’s not including the cost of other components. The joy of AlexaPi is not the outcome, but the educational journey. You’ll get a glimpse of how Alexa works behind the scenes, and possibly spark an interest in designing your own custom device with Alexa embedded. Amazon has made this Pi project possible for the purpose of encouraging device manufacturers to embed Alexa in their products. What is the difference between AlexaPi and Echo devices? AlexaPi has many of the basic features of an Echo device, but is not intended to be a replacement for purchasing an Echo device. Below are a few of the key similarities and differences between Echo and AlexaPi. Smart Home devices such as TP-Link Kasa, Teckin, Avatar, and more can be controlled via your AlexaPi with the same process as an Echo device. Alexa Skills are available on AlexaPi. For example, say, “Alexa open cat food.” This is a skill I wrote that plays the sound of opening a can of cat food. Calling & Messaging - At the time of the writing of this article in the US, calling via AlexaPi is not supported. What You’ll Need Raspberry Pi 3 or Raspberry Pi 4 16GB (or larger) microSD card (see best Raspberry Pi microSD cards) with a fresh install of Raspberry Pi OS Power supply/Keyboard/Mouse/Monitor/HDMI Cable (for your Raspberry Pi) USB Microphone Speaker with 3.5mm or USB connector. We’ve only tested with a 3.5mm speaker but USB should also work. Timing: Plan for a minimum of 1 hour to complete this project. The main install step takes 30 minutes to over an hour depending on your Pi model and internet speed. The majority of this tutorial is based on terminal commands. If you are not familiar with terminal commands on your Raspberry Pi, we highly recommend reviewing 25+ Linux Commands Raspberry Pi Users Need to Know first. AlexaPi Setup and Install 1. Connect your USB microphone and speaker to your Raspberry Pi. 2. Boot your Raspberry Pi. If you don’t already have a microSD card see our article on how to set up a Raspberry Pi for the first time or how to do a headless Raspberry Pi install.

  12. A complete and balanced diet with all the nutrients is the basis of any diet, especially if it includes products of plant origin. With these tips you can achieve it. If you include products of plant origin in the diet, by which a variety is guaranteed to obtain the nutrients that are normally obtained in foods of animal origin. You will have a balanced diet. This was pointed out by Johanna Molina, nutritionist at Pomar-Mulai: “if you plan to consume foods of plant origin, you have to do it properly to obtain the necessary nutrients, knowing that they are highly beneficial sources for the body and prevent the development of diabetes or other diseases of the cardiovascular system ”. Meanwhile, she added that special diets can be made that include foods of animal and vegetable origin so that the nutritional contributions are complemented. The contribution of dairy products of animal origin is high, its protein is considered of high biological value and it is also highly digestible and absorbable for humans. Achieving the balance between both diets is ideal and not staying with just one type, because their combination provides the body with vitamins, minerals such as calcium to strengthen bones and teeth, fiber and water, compounds that fight and prevent diseases , in addition to helping the metabolic and digestive system. We spoke with nutritionist Johanna Molina and she shared some tips for achieving a balanced diet. 1. How do we include more vegetables without changing our diet? Increasing the consumption of food sources of vegetable, as in the case of increasing the contribution of fruits and vegetables in preparations and also including products made from these plant sources as in the case of beverages, which are made from fruits dried, in particular a nut milk drink. 2. What is having good eating habits? Among the good eating habits it is important to mention that they include: basing the diet on natural products, that is, consuming a good source of food such as fruits, vegetables due to their high contribution of fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants; Nuts and their derivatives including dairy drinks prepared from these foods as they provide essential fatty acids that generate countless benefits to the body. In the same way, include protein from different sources both vegetable (legumes: beans, chickpeas, peas, lentils) and animal protein, moderately consuming red meat and increasing the consumption of white meat, likewise, the dairy drink of animal origin due to the contribution of Protein of high biological value (this means that it offers a wide variety of essential amino acids for the body) are necessary for our proper functioning and nutritional status. From the group of carbohydrates, try to consume them natural, avoid consuming a large quantity of refined products. In summary, offering our body food in adequate variety to meet all the requirements that the body has and likewise the amount of food consumed is very important to avoid the excesses and / or deficiencies generated by it. 3. How to find the balance? Providing through our diet, foods from all groups to offer the different nutrients required by the body controlling the amount, there lie many of the health problems of the po[CENSORED]tion, such as weight gain, by consuming the quantities in a greater proportion of those required and also all the diseases generated from it, including diabetes, hypertension, diseases of the cardiovascular system, among others. 4. How should vegetables be consumed? It depends on the type of food, texture and hardness that it has, if the food requires cooking this should be minimal to avoid the loss of nutrients that is generated when applying high temperatures to food, such as the denaturation of vitamins, minerals due to to cooking. If the food allows it, it is better to consume it raw, as long as disinfection methods are applied (this due to the high handling, among others that these foods have) to avoid acquiring pathogenic organisms through them that can generate some type of disease. 5. Do you have to spend a lot of time on a balanced diet? Why? The implications that having an inadequate diet has on our health are seen over the years and allows that, at a certain age, added to our family history, among other factors and lifestyles, we are diagnosed with chronic diseases such as being overweight or obesity, diabetes, hypertension, among others, that impair our quality of life and generate a gradual deterioration in sensitive organs such as the kidneys, heart, among others. That is why it is important from the childhood stage to generate adequate eating habits, avoiding consuming refined products, with a high contribution of sugars, saturated and hydrogenated fat, sodium among other compounds that accumulate in our body over the years, producing diseases. Finally, you must understand what the body needs to be well and achieve a balanced diet, if you decide to make plant-based dietary changes it is important to carry it out under medical and nutritional supervision due to the risks of certain dietary deficiencies.
  13. Normally, unlocking the iOS operating system occurs a few weeks or months after launch. In the case of iOS 13.5, the developers managed to launch a "jailbreak" only a few days away. The new unc0ver v5.0.0 was released over the weekend and works with all recent Apple devices. These are the ones launched in the last few years, including iPhone 11 or iPhone SE. The advantage of this jailbreak is that users do not give up the security of the operating system if they use it. Which devices are compatible with the new jailbreak for iOS 13.5 In general, a jailbreak for the iOS operating system uses loopholes in the security of the operating system, but breaks certain protections in order to work. In the case of unc0ver v5.0.0, the developers of the "Pwn20wnd" team claim that all Apple protections remain active. Thus, the applications will be able to run the applications in the sandbox, without the risk of being affected by other installed software. Apple Pay and iMessage features will also be functional, with no restrictions or risk of being accessed in the background. Basically, the new jailbreak for iOS 13.5 adds a new exception to the security system, which allows certain applications not approved by Apple to run. The new unc0ver is based on a 0-day exploit, so it is compatible with many iOS devices and versions. Pwn20wnd say that any device running iOS 11, 12 or 13, including the new 13.5 can be unlocked. Due to the nature of this vulnerability, it may take several weeks or even months to resolve the issue. Thus, those who want to run jailbroken iPhones or iPads now have the latest and most stable version of the operating system, which could be updated later. What operating system do you need on your computer to install unc0ver v5.0.0 It is interesting, however, that the installation can be done by several methods and on several operating systems. You can install unc0ver v5.0.0 on both Windows and macOS, as well as Linux and iOS. It seems that part of this feat benefits from the functionality of the AltStore alternative app store, launched last year on iOS by an independent developer. This software allows you to run applications outside the App Store even without jailbreak. However, there are plenty of reasons for jailbreaking, including the ability to customize the operating system, running applications without connecting to AltServer from time to time, and more. There is even the possibility to install uc0ver from another iOS device with jailbreak. You can download the iOS 13.5 unc0ver v.5.0.0 jailbreak from the official website. Here you will also find installation instructions for each operating system.
  14. Through Qualcomm's innovation, monitoring applications and blocking suspicious behavior will be more efficient and less impactful on device performance. Deployed at the hardware level in the Snapdragon 820 chipset, the technology called Smart Protect provides monitoring of applications installed on the device, issuing alerts for those where suspicious behavior or other anomalies not detected by conventional antivirus solutions are detected. Unlike software-implemented antivirus solutions that identify malware by comparing their signature to a list of known threats, the Smart Protect feature directly monitors what's happening on your phone, alerting you as soon as suspicious behavior is detected. The system can even identify new threats that are not included in the signature databases used by traditional anti-malware solutions. Snapdragon 820, the first chipset to offer hardware-implemented antivirus protection According to Asaf Ashkenazi, director of product management at Qualcomm, users will receive "almost instant notifications of unexpected activities and privacy violations." In addition, because the technology is implemented by hardware, reports will be kept offline and without consuming the device's battery excessively. Currently available only on devices equipped with the Snapdragon 820 chipset, Smart Protect technology will be used to complement the protection already offered by commercial antivirus products, with the company collaborating with Avast, AVG, Lookout and other security companies.

  16. A team of researchers from Riga is developing technology that will one day help change the course of asteroids heading for Earth, Euronews reports. High-precision hand-built chronoscopes in the laboratory of the Latvian start-up Eventech are used today to track the movements of satellites. But this year, the company won a contract from the European Space Agency (ESA) to develop tools capable of assessing the possibility of deflecting the course of an asteroid before it gets too close to our planet. In turn, NASA plans to launch the first phase of the AIDA mission next year to deflect the trajectory of an asteroid and assess the impact of such an operation, called the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART). Also, as part of DART, on July 22, 2021, a Falcon 9 missile from SpaceX, Elon Musk's company is to launch a 500-kilogram probe, equipped with a camera, in the direction of the asteroid Didymos to hit and change its current course, which risks approaching Earth in 2123. Eventech chronoscopes should be ready for the HERA tracking mission, scheduled five years later, to determine if this impact has really changed the course of the asteroid. "Our new technology, which will equip the second ESA spacecraft called the HERA, will measure whether the impact removed Didymos from the previous course, thus avoiding hitting Earth," said Imants Pulkstenis, Eventech engineer. "It's much more interesting to go where no man has ever been than to make consumer electronics for huge profits," he added. Eventech chronoscopes are part of Latvia's tradition of space technology, dating back to the Soviet era, when Sputnik - the first man-made satellite to orbit the Earth - was launched in 1957. They measure the time it takes for a pulse of light to reach and return from an orbiting object. Eventech devices can record time measurements of up to a picosecond - or a thousand billionth of a second - allowing them to be converted to distance measurements with an accuracy of up to two millimeters. Every year, about ten chronoscopes are produced by the Latvian laboratory to equip observers around the world. They make it possible to observe the Earth's atmosphere, increasingly crowded by new waves of private satellites, to which are added traditional scientific and military devices.
  17. Antibiotic resistance is a very real threat. In the near future, we may no longer be able to treat and cure many of the infections we could once have hacked, because the bacteria manage to survive the most sophisticated drugs we have. Experts estimate that 10 million people will die in the next 30 years due to bacterial resistance to antibiotics, and researchers are exploring alternatives. This is how a team of researchers from Great Britain seems to have found something promising in a source that not many would have thought of: a medieval manuscript, "Bald's Leechbook", considered to be one of the first medical texts, reports CNN. It is a natural remedy made from onions, garlic, wine and bile salts, which has shown its antibacterial potential, with hopes of treating diabetic foot and other foot infections, given that diabetic foot ulcers risk becoming complete. resistant to antibiotic treatment, hence the threat of sepsis and amputation. "Bald's Ointment", remade with ingredients from the supermarket Known as "Bald's ointment", the treatment has the potential to fight so-called biofilm infections (no - biofilm is the response of bacteria to stimuli that directly attack them. They combine and form a mass of bacteria difficult to fight) - communities of antibiotic-resistant bacteria that are more difficult to treat. The study by British researchers estimates that biofilm infections cost the UK alone over a billion pounds a year. For the first time, the medieval mixture proved to be a potential aid in the fight against supermicrobes in 2015, and the study now published in "Scientific Reports" shows how it worked and how it could be put into practice. Tested separately, each of the ingredients of the natural mixture has a certain antibacterial activity, but it seems that this activity becomes stronger when they are put to act together. Researchers remade the ointment from the old medieval book using garlic and onions bought from regular supermarkets, used an English white wine, and bile salts were taken from a beef stomach. Researchers have also tested ointment for safety, and the data are promising, especially when it comes to natural ingredients. The next step is to chemically characterize the mixture and then start testing on human skin. Old texts, a source of inspiration for new medicines Researching historical texts to find new treatments is not an unusual practice. Artemisinin, the anti-malarial drug derived from the wormwood plant, was discovered by Chinese researcher Tu Youyou after studying ancient Chinese texts. The researcher was awarded the 2015 Nobel Prize in Medicine. The culmination is that even in the old English book researchers found a wormwood remedy recommended for malaria, a disease that wreaked havoc in England in the early medieval period. Antibiotics are essential in modern medicine, and if they lose their effectiveness, medical procedures such as surgery and chemotherapy could become too dangerous. That is why researchers are looking for new antibiotics, but also alternative treatments. Common substances in everyday life are considered, such as honey or vinegar, but also more unusual sources, such as the blood of the giant monitor lizard (Komodo monitor lizard). In other approaches, viruses are used to attack ultra-resistant bacteria.
  18. On Sunday, December 6, the day of the parliamentary elections, the people from the quarantined localities will be able to exercise their right to vote without presenting any document proving this, according to Prime Minister Ludovic Orban. Those in quarantine will only be able to vote using the mobile ballot box. "The exercise of the right to vote must be unrestricted in quarantine areas as well. Every citizen, even if he is in a locality that is temporarily under quarantine, has the freedom to go to the polling station and vote, without giving a statement. It's voting day. Everyone knows that people go to exercise their right to vote. We have CNSU during tomorrow, before the Government meeting, after which in the Government meeting we will transpose the CNSU proposal in the modification of the GD regarding the alert status. (They will be able to walk - n.red.) Without giving a statement. This is an unnecessary formality. It is clear that the man is leaving the house to go to the polls. It should not be understood that those who are quarantined can go to the polls. Those who are quarantined, as a result of a DSP decision, must stay at home or at the location where they have established their quarantine. They will be able to exercise their right to vote through a mobile ballot box ", Prime Minister Ludovic Orban declared at Digi24.
  19. The next generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class will also have a performance version of the AMG S63. According to sources, the model will be equipped with a plug-in hybrid propulsion system capable of delivering about 800 hp. In recent weeks, Mercedes-Benz has released a series of new information on the next generation S-Class. The model will be presented on September 2 and promises both aesthetic changes and a lot of news in the field of safety and assistance systems. At the same time, the future S-Class will be available in an electric version called EQS. As before, customers will discover in the offer and versions signed by the AMG division. According to reports, the Germans will not offer an AMG S65, the W12 engine will be available only on Mercedes-Maybach variants. Also, the future AMG S63 could be equipped exclusively with a plug-in hybrid propulsion system. According to sources, the top of the range will rely on the same system prepared by the Germans for the future Mercedes-AMG GT 73 4-Door Coupe. Reports mention a 4.0-liter biturbo V8 and an electric motor. In total, the plug-in hybrid system would provide about 800 horsepower. The same sources say that the launch of the performance version of Mercedes-AMG S63 would take place next autumn.
  20. Although it was supposed to be a triumphant moment for NVIDIA, the launch of the GeForce RTX 3080/3090 family of graphics accelerators in stores drowned in detail, the first batch of video cards on sale being bought by opportunists eager to speculate on the enthusiasm of fans reselling at much inflated price , only for the entire batch of products to be compromised due to a hardware defect. GeForce RTX 3080, no version with 20GB memory Following the course of events, we find that the new series of NVIDIA "Ampere" graphics accelerators is equally absent from store stocks, the graphics chip supplier failing to keep up with the huge demand from consumers. Although unproven, fresh hopes have been dashed by rival AMD, whose offer of next-gen graphics accelerators "Navi" could raise real competition for NVIDIA, at least in the budget range. GeForce RTX 3080 In practice, the problems for NVIDIA are not only limited to the availability of graphics processors, but also to GDDR6X memory supplies. Developed on the basis of proprietary technologies to which NVIDIA has exclusivity, GDDR6X memory chips can be delivered by a single designated manufacturer - Micron, which means that any problems in production can not be solved by contracting other semiconductor suppliers . However, the lack of GDDR6X memory stocks only justifies abandoning the 20GB GeForce RTX 3080 edition, not the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti model with 16 GB GDDR6 memory, which is much easier to obtain from suppliers such as SK Hynix and Samsung. Mais sobre o texto original Most likely, the decision taken by NVIDIA is related to the availability of the graphics chip manufacturer, Samsung, whose 8nm process would not be as efficient as previously thought. In the end, Nvidia seems to choose to follow the already chosen direction, trying to deliver as many copies of the GeForce RTX 3080 series with 10GB memory, the GeForce RTX 3070 model with 8GB video memory entering only as a timid answer for the new offer of graphics accelerators AMD, NVIDIA remaining to re-evaluate the situation early next year.
  21. For those who have Android smartphones it may seem strange, but iPhone users have never been able to download system updates using the 4G connection. However, this limit disappears today, when the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro reach the first customers in the countries where they have already been put on sale. It seems that Apple will finally allow the possibility to download system updates using a 5G connection, even if the phone is not connected to a WiFi network. Apple allows downloading updates to iPhone 12 via 5G It's unclear why Apple has had this limitation for iPhone models so far. 4G networks offered more than enough speeds to download these updates, and many high-end phone users have unlimited internet or plans with tens or hundreds of GB of monthly traffic anyway. In fact, many of the smaller updates require only a few tens or hundreds of MB to download, only the updates that bring important software versions being larger than 1 GB. Being the first models with 5G, the phones from the iPhone 12 range will be the first to be able to download new versions of iOS through the new generation networks. In fact, this function will be deactivated at the factory, requiring manual activation. However, this is done from the connectivity menu, not from the general settings, where updates are usually made. Basically, for 5G, Apple offers three new connectivity settings: Mode data on 5G, Standard and Low Data Mode. The differences are in transfer speeds and most likely energy consumption. In the highest setting, the phone will be able to download software updates and other larger files at maximum 5G speeds. FaceTime calls will also be played back at full quality. Standard is the mixed mode, which still uses 4G connections when 5G speeds are not required and uses a low quality profile for video calls, while Low Data Mode stops software updates over mobile networks and certain background data transfers. While this is certainly good news, the bad news is that the 5G signal is still very limited, both in Romania and in most other countries.
