here in England, Scotland and Wales, relaxed indoor mixing rules are cut from five days to Christmas Day. What is tier four and who is in it? Should you see your family at Christmas? Postcode check: Find out the rules where you live Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced the changes for England at a Downing Street briefing after scientists said a new coronavirus variant was spreading more rapidly. Tier-four restrictions - similar to England's second national lockdown - will apply in all areas in the South East currently in tier three, covering Kent, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Surrey (excluding Waverley), Gosport, Havant, Portsmouth, Rother and Hastings. It will also apply in London (all 32 boroughs and the City of London) and the East of England (Bedford, Central Bedford, Milton Keynes, Luton, Peterborough, Hertfordshire, Essex (excluding Colchester, Uttlesford and Tendring). In Scotland, Covid restrictions will only be relaxed on Christmas Day, with mainland Scotland being placed under the tightest restrictions from Boxing Day. Outlining the changes, Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said she wished she had acted quicker to curb the virus in February, adding: "Standing here saying this actually makes me want to cry." A ban on travel to the rest of the UK will also apply over the festive period. In Wales, First Minister Mark Drakeford announced that the country will be placed under lockdown from midnight. In Northern Ireland, no changes have been made to Christmas restrictions, with three households allowed to meet from 23 to 27 December. The country is set to enter a six-week lockdown from 26 December. Tier four graphic For tier-four areas in England, a stay-at-home order has been issued, with exemptions for those who have to travel to work or for education. Social mixing will be cut to meeting one person in an open public space, unless you live with them or they are part of your existing support bubble. All non-essential retail will have to close, along with hairdressers, nail bars, indoor gyms and leisure facilities. People elsewhere will be advised not to travel into a tier-four area. The restrictions will last for two weeks, with the first review due on 30 December. NHS pressure 'at a really dangerous point' UK's R number back above one 'I won't have next summer let alone next Christmas' Mr Johnson told the Downing Street briefing he knew how "disappointing" the news would be, but said he believed there was no alternative open to him. When the virus changes its methods of attack, he said, "we must change our method of defence". Mr Johnson acknowledged it was "unquestionably a difficult moment" in the coronavirus crisis but insisted that things would be "radically different" by Easter due to the vaccine. He did not confirm whether police would be told to stop people travelling home over the festive period or knock on doors on Christmas Day. Mr Johnson said analysis suggested the new variant could increase the the R number by 0.4 or more. Although there is "considerable uncertainty", it may be up to 70% more transmissible than the old variant, he said. Chart showing cases rising across England Presentational white space England's chief medical officer, Prof Chris Whitty, said that while the new variant of coronavirus will make things much worse, if the vaccine works against it there was room for optimism. He has previously said there is no current evidence to suggest the new variant causes a higher mortality rate or that is affected any differently by vaccines and treatments. Speaking at the Downing Street briefing, he added: "I think this is a situation which is going to make things a lot worse, but there are some really optimistic things if you look once we get the vaccine out, assuming the vaccine works against this, which at the moment is the working assumption." Sir Patrick Vallance, the government's chief scientific adviser, urged the public to assume they might be infectious when considering meeting others over Christmas. Presentational grey line There is still some reason for hope Analysis box by Nick Triggle, health correspondent The steep increase in the proportion of coronavirus cases linked to this new variant is strong evidence that it is driving transmission. In London, 28% of cases were as a result of this new mutation in mid-November, but that has now increased to more than 60%. It may explain why, during the second lockdown, cases started to increase in London, while in Kent the tier three measures appear to have had little impact in recent weeks. As England's chief medical adviser Prof Chris Whitty says, this is a bad moment, but there is also some hope. Mutations happen all the time - there have been thousands of variations to this coronavirus since it emerged - and there is nothing to suggest this causes more serious illness or will hamper the effectiveness of the vaccine. The prime minister announced 350,000 people had been given the first dose of the vaccine in the first two weeks of the programme. In the coming weeks, the number of GP-led vaccination clinics should increase six-fold, while approval of a second vaccine made by Oxford University could pave the way for mass vaccination centres to be set up in sports stadiums and conference centres. That could see two million people a week being vaccinated. Within a matter of months all the over-65s could have been offered a jab. This could then start to feel very different. But for now, the slog of the pandemic continues - and for many it just got harder.

CD Projekt Could Face Investor Lawsuits Over Cyberpunk 2077 CD Projekt could soon be facing yet another Cyberpunk 2077 problem, arguably bigger than having to offer refunds to upset players: a class-action lawsuit. It isn't from other players, either, but potentially from investors who felt they were misled about the game's quality prior to release. According to VGC, multiple law firms, as well as a CD Projekt investor, are looking into a class-action suit related to potential misrepresentation by CD Projekt. The company could be accused of breaking an SEC rule that makes it unlawful to operate "as a fraud or a deceit upon any person" during security transactions. Now Playing: Cyberpunk 2077 - Best Bugs And Glitches In other words, this potential lawsuit would see investors taking aim at CD Projekt rather than the customers who bought the game. Given the massive drop in share value for the company over the last week, this isn't a huge surprise. Several of the executives and co-founders of the company have reportedly lost over $1 billion in their own stock value since the game's launch. CD Projekt Red admitted that it hadn't given the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Cyberpunk 2077 enough development time before their December 10 release, and we saw almost nothing from these versions prior to their launch. The games run particularly poorly on those platforms, with frequent drops in frame rate and stability issues. It isn't exactly polished on PC, either, as we pointed out in our Cyberpunk 2077 review, and it remains to be seen how the full next-gen versions turn out on Xbox Series X|S and PS5. Last week, Xbox and PlayStation both began offering full refunds for the digital versions of Cyberpunk 2077. Best Buy followed suit on the physical version, as did CD Projekt itself. For those looking to request a physical refund, you have until tomorrow, December 21.

Core i9-11900 Rocket Lake Flexes in CPU-Z Benchmark Intel is getting closer to its Rocket Lake launch next year and is already pumping out engineering samples of its future Rocket Lake CPUs. As spotted by HXL, someone in China managed to snag an engineering sample of an eight-core 16-thread Core i9-11900 and put the processor through its paces in a CPU-Z test. The Rocket Lake chip scored 582 in the single-threaded test and 5262 in the multi-threaded benchmark. Image 1 of 4 Core i9-11900 Engineering Sample (Image credit: Twitter) Core i9-11900 Engineering Sample (Image credit: Twitter) Core i9-11900 Engineering Sample (Image credit: Twitter) Core i9-11900 Engineering Sample (Image credit: Twitter) The Core i7-10700K is the closest CPU in the CPUz benchmark database, scoring 568 in single-core and 5625 in multi-core benchmarks. That's around 7% faster than the Rocket Lake Core i9. While the Rocket Lake chip's result is strange, bear in mind that the engineering sample runs at much lower frequencies than we'll probably see with final silicon. For now, the SKU runs with a 1.8 GHz base, 3.8 GHz all-core boost, and a 4.4 GHz single-core turbo. This is quite normal, though; engineering samples are not finalized products and are only used for development purposes. As such, we should expect the finalized product to have much higher core clocks. Naturally, we expect the Core i9 models to have much higher boost frequencies. However, while the slower frequencies explain the lackluster single-threaded performance, Rocket Lake's lower core counts are partially to blame for the reduced multi-core performance. For Rocket Lake CPUs, Intel has downgraded core counts to 9th-Gen Coffee Lake levels – now the Core i9 models max out at eight cores and 16 threads. That means the only difference between the 10th Gen Core i7s, 11th Gen Core i7s, and Core i9s is clock speed alone (besides a few minor enhancements for the 11th gen chips). The reduced core counts result from Intel's use of a 10nm architecture that's backported to a less-dense 14nm node. This is not ideal at all. In fact, new core architectures are traditionally not designed to be backported onto larger nodes, as the resulting chip has fewer transistors within any given area. That gives chip designers a smaller transistor budget to work with, which ultimately results in some additives, like cores and GPU EUs, being discarded. But, as with any product, the Rocket Lake chips are developed with certain design targets in mind - in the case of Rocket Lake, Intel is obviously focused on vastly improving its IPC, and thus gaming performance. Pairing Rocket's increased IPC with Intel's stellar 14nm clocks could result in blistering gaming performance, but the jury is still out until silicon hits our test benches. Hopefully, Intel can give the Core i9 chips enough frequency to keep them relevant against rivals like AMD – competition is good for everyone.

FIA develops "100% sustainable" biofuel for Formula 1 Samples of a new sustainable fuel developed by the FIA have been delivered to Formula 1 engine manufacturers for testing, in line with the sport's goal to be carbon-neutral by 2030. The FIA, as motorsport's global governing body, has agreed a strategy for F1 to become carbon-neutral from 2021 as part of a wider effort to "reduce the environment impact of motorsport and mobility by setting clear goals to accelerate this progress". To that end, the organisation has commissioned the development of a biofuel claimed to be "100% sustainable" and to conform with F1's stringent regulations. The first barrels have now been delivered to Ferrari, Honda, Mercedes-AMG and Renault, which supply the V6 hybrid powertrains to F1's 10 teams. No details have been given on the substance's make-up, but the FIA claims that it's "exclusively refined using biowaste", unlike the high-octane petrol currently used by F1 cars. It's planned that successful trials of the new fuel will prompt F1 suppliers to develop similar substances, with an ultimate end goal of the series using 100% sustainable fuels by 2026. As of the start of the next F1 season, all teams must use fuel that is 10% biofuel, plus it will be permitted in other series, including the European Truck Racing Championship. FIA president Jean Todt said: "[The] FIA takes its responsibility in leading motorsport and mobility into a low-carbon future to reduce the environmental impacts of our activities and contribute to a greener planet. "I’m glad that our Members Clubs approve our environmental strategy that's part of the Purpose Driven initiative focused on the societal contribution of our two pillars. "By developing sustainable fuel made from biowaste that can power F1, we're taking a new step forward. With the support of the world’s leading energy companies, we can combine the best technological and environmental performance.”

Meghan settles case over Archie photos with Splash UK agency The Duchess of Sussex has settled a legal claim against a news agency that photographed her and her son, Archie, the High Court has heard. Splash News and Picture Agency - which is in administration - has agreed not to take photos of her, Prince Harry or Archie, should it resume trading. Meghan's solicitor said the photos were taken during a "private family outing" in a park in Canada. Splash administrators accepted the solicitor's comments. The pictures were taken in Horth Hill Regional Park on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, on 20 January, using a long lens, and showed Meghan walking with her two dogs, with Archie in a baby sling. The duke and duchess had set up base in Canada at the time, after announcing their intention to step back as senior members of the Royal Family and divide their time between the UK and North America. They later relocated to Meghan's home state of California. Harry and Meghan sue over 'drone photos' of son Prince Harry paid damages over photos of home Harry and Meghan issue media warning over photos Meghan brought privacy and data protection claims against Splash in March both in her own right and with her husband, Harry, on behalf of Archie. However, Splash UK went into administration on 1 July, after the claim had been issued and served. Mr Justice Nicklin heard details of the settlement at a remote High Court hearing. Meghan's solicitor, Jenny Afia, said that in light of the administration the parties had agreed to settle the claim against the agency, with Splash UK agreeing not to take any photographs of the couple or their son, should it come out of administration in the future. Ms Afia told the court the couple's case was that the taking of the photographs was an "unlawful invasion of privacy" and their subsequent syndication to the media violated their data protection rights. She said the couple held that when the photographs were taken, Meghan and Archie were on "a private family outing in a remote rural setting and that there was no public interest in the photographs". Ms Afia added it was the couple's case that, a day before the photographs were taken, a Splash photographer made "a full reconnaissance inspection" of their private home, "walking around it looking to identify entry and exit points and putting his camera over the fence to take photographs". Neil Allen, of the administrators of Splash UK, accepted "all that Ms Afia has said" on behalf of the agency. A spokesman for the parent company Splash said: "Splash confirms that one of its former companies has agreed that, should it begin trading again, it will not take unauthorised photographs of the family of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex." A spokesman for Schillings, Meghan and Harry's legal representatives, said the settlement was "a clear signal that unlawful, invasive and intrusive paparazzi behaviour will not be tolerated, and that the couple takes these matters seriously - just as any family would." A simultaneous and similar claim against Splash US - Splash UK's American sister company - is continuing through the UK courts, the spokesman added. The duchess is also suing Associated Newspapers, publisher of The Mail On Sunday and MailOnline, over publication of a letter the duchess wrote to her estranged father, Thomas Markle. In October, she was granted a postponement of the trial, which had been due to be held in January, until autumn 2021.

How to Play Cyberpunk 2077 on Integrated or Low-End Graphics Cyberpunk 2077 is a monumental game release that isn’t designed for less-than-monumental hardware. The game is struggling in last-gen consoles and many modest PCs, as it has clearly been intended for next-gen CPUs and GPUs or some of the best gaming PCs. But for those of us stuck with components that are two or three generations old, meeting the Cyberpunk 2077 system requirements and getting decent performance can be a challenge. The good news is that you can make significant tweaks beyond what’s available in the settings menu and those will help you reach playable frame rates on low-end discrete graphics or even some integrated graphics processors. In-Game Settings for Cyberpunk 2077 We are going to start from the lowest game settings, which are all clearly labelled so there are no surprises on what is supposed to be lower. Cyberpunk 2077 on Integrated Graphics (Image credit: Tom's Hardware) One tip: there is an important related performance setting hidden in the gameplay tab: crowd density. Lowering this is extremely useful for the heavy open areas of Night City. Cyberpunk 2077 on Integrated Graphics (Image credit: Tom's Hardware) A very interesting setting is the addition of Contrast Adaptative Sharpening (CAS), a setting that allows rendering the game in a lower resolution and then scaling it back up while sharpening the image. This is an AMD feature (usually found in the AMD control panel) but it is implemented directly in the game, meaning that we can use it on any GPU. Regrettably, its lowest allowed value is 50% of the external resolution, and lowest settings look blurry thanks to the forced Temporal Anti Aliasing. Both things can be fixed, so let's get to that. Custom CAS values for Cyberpunk 2077 The values shown on the menu are controlled by a file in the game's installation directory: r6/config/settings/platform/pc/options.json. Cyberpunk 2077 on Integrated Graphics (Image credit: Tom's Hardware) Easily noticeable is this section which controls the minimum and maximum values for the CAS setting. Here the lowest allowed value can be set lower than 50. Cyberpunk 2077 on Integrated Graphics (Image credit: Tom's Hardware) Additionally, the main user configuration file is stored on the user app data folder: C:\Users\YOUR USER\AppData\Local\CD Projekt Red\Cyberpunk 2077\UserSettings.json Yet again there is a section here to control the allowed values for CAS. If min and max values between these two files do not match, the game tends to crash on boot. Cyberpunk 2077 on Integrated Graphics (Image credit: Tom's Hardware) If changed properly, the settings should now go down to a custom value in the game's menu. Cyberpunk 2077 on Integrated Graphics (Image credit: Tom's Hardware) Still, very low CAS resolution looks very blurry due to Anti Aliasing. So let's disable that next. Disabling Anti Aliasing in Cyberpunk 2077 There is a very useful configuration file located in the installation directory of the game: INSTALLATION DIRECTORY\engine\config\base\general.ini Here we can add a [Developer/FeatureToggles] section to customize some things about the game. For example, we can disable anti aliasing with: [Developer/FeatureToggles] Antialiasing = 0 AntialiasingSuppressed = 1 Advertisement Cyberpunk 2077 on Integrated Graphics (Image credit: Tom's Hardware) This offers a minor but important performance boost on the weakest of GPUs, with the additional advantage of making the game more legible on lower resolutions, including those caused by lower CAS values. Tweaking shadows in Cyberpunk 2077 In the same general.ini file, commands can be added to disable most of the shadows after a certain distance and remove many of the shadows closer to the camera. [Developer/FeatureToggles] DistantShadows = 0 LocalShadows = 0 ContactShadows = 0 Cyberpunk 2077 on Integrated Graphics (Image credit: Tom's Hardware) This has one of the biggest performance impacts of all quick changes you can do and while it does have a visual impact (particularly in daylight scenes) it is still within manageable levels if you must play this game no matter what. Disabling global illumination in Cyberpunk 2077 A couple of commands in the same file can disable the use of global illumination. [Developer/FeatureToggles] DistantGI = 0 GlobalIllumination = 0 This has the effect of making the game look darker, especially indoors and at night, in exchange for a performance boost. Advertisement Cyberpunk 2077 on Integrated Graphics (Image credit: Tom's Hardware) However, be warned that these interact oddly with the commands that disable shadows causing surfaces under direct sunlight to shine extremely brightly. Cyberpunk 2077 on Integrated Graphics (Image credit: Tom's Hardware) This might force you to choose between disabling shadows or global illumination. My personal recommendation is that you stick to disabling shadows and leave illumination on default as it provides the more usable experience. Disabling Hair in Cyberpunk 2077 Amusingly enough you can add a command in this list that can disable character hair, including beards: [Developer/FeatureToggles] Hair = 0 Advertisement Cyberpunk 2077 on Integrated Graphics (Image credit: Tom's Hardware) The performance impact this has is small and will only help the most desperate but it is worth mentioning just by how amusing it is. Performance of Cyberpunk 2077 on Integrated Graphics I ran my test on an Athlon 3000G APU, a dual-core CPU with integrated Vega 3 graphics that is way under what is logical to run a game like this and therefore a useful test case. Cyberpunk 2077 on Integrated Graphics (Image credit: Tom's Hardware) On a custom CAS value of 40% of 1080p on regular low settings, the game struggles to maintain 20 FPS in an open area of the city. Cyberpunk 2077 on Integrated Graphics (Image credit: Tom's Hardware) With all the changes applied, this climbs to a shaky 30 FPS, which is a tremendous improvement, even if the illumination glitches make the game difficult to play. Cyberpunk 2077 on Integrated Graphics (Image credit: Tom's Hardware) Interestingly enough even in combat, the game managed to keep things around 22 FPS which is significantly more than I expected from this little APU. Bottom line If you are trying to get Cyberpunk 2077 in a PC under its minimum requirements and, even after using the lowest preset, you cannot get the game to playable frame rates there are a couple of things to try. A custom CAS value can lower the in-game resolution without affecting UI, disabled Anti Aliasing makes those low resolutions less blurry and disabling shadows or global illumination can boost performance further. Be careful about disabling both as it can cause illumination glitches that make the game unplayable. Further performance mods are being actively created and discovered, so even more performance tweaks might be available in the near future.

Enterprise Software CEOs From The Cloud 100 Predict A Massive Upswing In 2021 A GGV Capital survey reveals 94% of private cloud companies expect improved revenue in 2021, while two-thirds do not expect the pandemic to impact their businesses beyond next year. The Covid-19 pandemic has upended almost every facet of our lives; enterprise software companies, from startups to multibillion-dollar public companies, have not been immune to 2020’s headwinds. Yet this sector also benefited from the mass shift to work-from-home and accelerated digital adoption. For the last decade, companies have been transitioning their business processes, applications, and data to the cloud, and COVID-19 simply sped up this digital transformation. As an investor in the software industry for over 20 years, I wanted to explore the impact of the pandemic on enterprise companies and what their CEOs predict will happen to their businesses in 2021. So I conducted an informal survey; I polled 25 CEOs of top software companies, from growth-stage to pre-IPO, listed in this year’s Forbes Cloud 100, and 17 responded. It’s hardly a scientific study, but the CEOs’ responses were illuminating, proving the pandemic has hurt many software companies’ 2020 top-lines but also provided unprecedented opportunities for growth. Survey response showing the impact of Covid-19 on annual ARR for current forecast vs. pre-pandemic plan ADAM SHARRATT AND STUDIO 96 PUBLISHING Nearly 90% of respondents say the COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacted their 2020 top-line results. Seven companies project their top-line annual ARR to come in up to 20% below their pre-COVID plan, while six project results that are 20-50% below their pre-COVID plans. Two companies actually project higher ARR than planned pre-COVID, proving some software business models flourished during work-from-home orders. Not surprisingly, however, the overall top-line impact of the pandemic for this group was negative in the down 20% to down 50% range. Yet valuations for many private enterprise software companies surged during the pandemic; public market funds and venture investors alike clearly believe organizations will continue their digital transformations via cloud computing, AI, and open source. Public Company Performance vs. Estimated Internal Pre-COVID Plan ADAM SHARRATT AND STUDIO 96 PUBLISHING MORE FOR YOU Inside Qualtrics Billionaire And New NBA Owner Ryan Smith’s Plans For The Jazz: ‘The Front Door To Utah’ The Problem With Bitcoin At $20,000 Their Venture Fund Was ‘A Sign Of A Bubble.’ Then They Turned $1.9 Million In DoorDash Into $440 Million Interestingly, many public cloud companies also underperformed in 2020 compared to projected guidance, but they seemed to have weathered the pandemic better than private cloud companies. GGV took a look at published financial records for 36 public cloud companies, and, in aggregate, roughly two-thirds of these companies undershot our estimate of their internal, pre-COVID top-line plans for 2020, but they did so by a smaller margin than the 17 private companies I surveyed. Their median underperformance compared to plan was -2.9%. The other one-third of the public companies we examined actually exceeded our estimates of their internal, pre-COVID top-line plans. Why did public cloud companies perform better than private ones in 2020? We don’t think public cloud companies are necessarily higher quality than private ones, but, more likely, they were not growing as fast as their private counterparts leading into COVID, so they didn’t have as high a hill to climb to maintain planned internal growth assumptions. It has also been easier to sell new business into existing accounts than to find new accounts during the pandemic, giving public companies with a large installed base an advantage. [Note: To identify the public companies’ internal pre-COVID growth plans for 2020, we took the simple average growth rate from the full-year 2020 public guidance these companies offered when reporting their Q4 ’19 results, just prior to the pandemic, and the full-year growth these companies sustained in 2019. Although not perfect, this seems a pretty good proxy for most public companies’ pre-COVID 2020 plans.] Survey response on the level of optimism for the 2021 vs. 2020 business climate ADAM SHARRATT AND STUDIO 96 PUBLISHING Private cloud companies are already recovering and confident regarding the future. Almost all of the software CEOs we surveyed are more optimistic about 2021 than they are with the reality of 2020. Out of the 17 respondents, 16 believe their businesses will improve in 2021. Seven said their businesses would perform significantly better in 2021, and nine thought business would be mildly better next year. Additionally, while no one knows how the pandemic will play out, two-thirds of the CEOs surveyed believe the pandemic will not impact their businesses beyond 2021. Survey response showing the expected impact of the pandemic on business beyond 2021? ADAM SHARRATT AND STUDIO 96 PUBLISHING Many of the CEOs we surveyed believe that, with vaccines becoming widely available, the world will return to some semblance of normal in mid-2021. “I see a massive upswing in in-person experiences such as entertainment, travel, and social engagement beyond pre-COVID levels as people ‘make up for lost time’, and with that, I see corresponding success for tech platforms enabling these,” said one CEO. “2021 will be the perfect storm for enterprise software—massive IT budget increases, paired with a distributed workforce,” said one CEO. Seeing strong demand for remote workforce technologies, security infrastructure, and data capture and analytics software, the CEOs were confident revenues would improve. “There will be a sustained momentum in digital transformation even as we move past COVID,” predicted one CEO, while another expects an “acceleration of technology that connects people and teams and that creates more business agility.” As demand for enterprise software booms in 2021, the CEOs believe a shakeout may come later in the year. “Competition between cloud providers will lead to lower margins, with each cloud trying to differentiate themselves with exclusive software,” said one CEO. Another commented that we should expect to see “much higher volatility between the winners and losers, and if the model is right, business will accelerate; if it is not, there will be no room for error and companies will collapse.” I believe the enterprise software companies that will succeed post-pandemic will fall into three broad categories: those that serve developers with offerings that win their hearts and minds utilizing open source and API-driven models such as Hashicorp, Confluent, and Stripe; those enabling knowledge workers through low-code or no-code apps, such as SmartSheet and Notion; and those helping organizations extract value from massive quantities of data, including Snowflake, Databricks, and MongoDB. Of course, these companies are already success stories, and many startups will emerge in an ecosystem around these winners in the next few years. With 2020 in the rearview mirror, I’m sure I speak for everyone in that I can’t wait to see what 2021 brings.

My co-living lifestyle in Gran Canaria: Work hard, play harder It’s hard to imagine spending the winter lounging on golden sugar sand beaches, dining alfresco and sailing across dazzling blue ocean. But that’s exactly what I did this November on the exotic, sun-soaked island of Gran Canaria. I’ve been lucky enough to enjoy a whole month co-living with a bunch of wonderful ‘digital nomads.’ For those who’ve never heard of the term, a digital nomad is someone who works remotely while exploring the world. My life hasn’t always been this way. But since I decided to plunge into the realm of working abroad, the world really has been my oyster. I work remotely as a copywriter while travelling. Around a year ago, I decided to pack up my life in London for good and head out onto the open road with Wifi Tribe, an organisation that brings like-minded professionals together from around the world. So what exactly did the experience involve and could it be for you? Buildings designed for co-living are usually completely furnished and aim to create an inspiring and engaging environment for people to communicate and share experiences. A great space will offer a large kitchen, plenty of room for working, and comfy lounge areas. Of course, a strong wifi connection is essential! In Gran Canaria, I stayed in ‘The Roof’ in the island’s buzzy capital, Las Palmas. Run by repeople Co-living, I shared the space with 11 other digital nomads from Wifi Tribe, which I’ll dish the details on a bit later. We had plenty of room to work, cook, and socialise. The large open roof area meant we spent numerous work breaks and mornings enjoying group yoga sessions or a spot of badminton (yep, there was even enough space for a pop-up court.) The Roof isn’t the only po[CENSORED]r co-living spot in Europe, either. I’ve heard great things about many other locations. There are the quaint wooden chalets of Swiss Escape in the charming village of Grimentz in Switzerland and the cosy four-storey dwelling of Casa Netural in the cave town of Matera in Italy that I’d love to visit too. Gran Canaria as a digital nomad hub Gran Canaria is growing as a hub for digital nomads, and it makes sense why. The island has all the trimmings of an ideal destination with plenty to do, incredible year-round weather, and excellent infrastructure. While we spent most of our time co-working at The Roof (honestly, it seemed to have everything we needed during the week), I’ve heard that there are a ton of great co-working spaces and atmospheric cafes to work in Las Palmas too. When we weren’t at our desks, we’d navigate to other areas of the island to get some serious exploring in. For the hedonists and adventure-seekers out there, Gran Canaria is a dream. We spent our weekends zooming through the dust and rocks on off-road buggies, hiking across craggy mountains to discover hidden beaches, and indulging in plenty of water sports activities. But if you prefer a more relaxing ‘workation’, don’t worry. Gran Canaria is home to stretches and stretches of sandy beaches to rest your head on. Plus, the Spaniards take lunch (and siesta) very seriously. It’s easy to while away your afternoon sipping on fruit-filled sangria and tucking into a mouth-watering tapas spread. Travelling with Wifi Tribe I travelled with Wifi Tribe, a company I can genuinely recommend to others. They offer flexible live-around-the-world memberships, where you select different locations to live in one month at a time. These month-long trips are called chapters. Groups run small to keep bonds between members tight, with a maximum of 25 people per chapter. On our Gran Canaria chapter, there were 21 of us split into two houses. Most of us work similar nine-to-five hours, so generally, we spent our weekdays working together, then maximised our weekends with plenty of fun and adventure. On weekday evenings, we’d go out for dinners or cook together ourselves. Travelling with a community has been a complete game-changer for me. Making friends when you’re travelling and working can be challenging, especially when you’re busy during the week. But with co-living, everyone is in the same situation, and many people have that ‘work hard, play harder’ mentality that I appreciate so much. Now, as I prepare myself to (quite unwillingly) leave the glorious island of Gran Canaria, I’ll go with a bunch of lifelong friends and memories of the unbeatable winter sun and adventure.

Brexit trade talks: 'Big differences remain' - Ursula von der Leyen "Big differences remain to be bridged" in talks to reach a post-Brexit trade deal, the EU Commission head has said following a call with Boris Johnson. Ursula von der Leyen warned it would be "very challenging" to overcome differences, particularly on fisheries. According to a No 10 spokesman, the PM said "time was short" and the talks are in a "serious situation". He also said a no deal scenario was "very likely" unless the EU position changed "substantially". Despite speaking of difficulties, Mrs von der Leyen also welcomed "substantial progress on many issues". Talks in Brussels will continue on Friday, with two weeks to go before the UK leaves EU trading rules. In a statement issued after the phone call, No 10 said: "He [Mr Johnson] said that we were making every effort to accommodate reasonable EU requests on the level playing field, but even though the gap had narrowed some fundamental areas remained difficult. "On fisheries he stressed that the UK could not accept a situation where it was the only sovereign country in the world not to be able to control access to its own waters for an extended period and to be faced with fisheries quotas which hugely disadvantaged its own industry. "The EU's position in this area was simply not reasonable and if there was to be an agreement it needed to shift significantly." 2px presentational grey line The basics Brexit happened but rules didn't change at once: The UK left the European Union on 31 January 2020, but leaders needed time to negotiate a deal for life afterwards - they got 11 months. Talks are happening: The UK and the EU have until 31 December 2020 to agree a trade deal as well as other things, such as fishing rights. If there is no deal: Border checks and taxes will be introduced for goods travelling between the UK and the EU. But deal or no deal, we will still see changes. What happens next with Brexit? 2px presentational grey line The call comes as minister Michael Gove told peers that talks about a trade deal "may go on until after Christmas". Mr Gove said he hoped a deal could be reached "as quickly as possible". He said that while the European Parliament has said it would not have time to ratify a deal if it was not concluded by Sunday, they could "apply provisional application of the treaty". Mr Gove, who has led much of the UK government's preparations for no deal, appeared in front of two separate select committees of the House of Commons and the Lords on Thursday. At his first appearance, he told MPs that while "Christmas Day will be sacrosanct", it is "entirely possible" that Parliament "could be sitting on any other day up until 31 December". European Parliament leaders have set Sunday as a deadline for them to see the text of any deal agreed by the negotiating teams. 'Narrow path' available for Brexit deal - EU chief What are the sticking points in Brexit trade talks? What you need to know about the UK leaving the EU The senior MEPs said they would "not be rushed" into approving an agreement at their end, and would have to see the text by the end of the week if they were to sign it off by 31 December. It's long been predicted that competition rules and fishing would be the last areas where compromise is found. For Boris Johnson's government, being tied to EU regulations in perpetuity defeats the purpose of Brexit and makes a mockery of "taking back control". For the European Union, it will not allow its internal market to be undermined by offering the UK unfair access. Ursula von der Leyen has claimed the two sides have made a significant step by agreeing to a "strong mechanism" to ensure neither side lowers their environmental or social standards, but are yet to agree on how each could diverge from these levels in the future. A good number of EU diplomats were quietly confident it was a matter of when, not if, EU access to UK fishing waters could be sorted. But it's proving trickier than they thought. Sources tell me that Michel Barnier explained to EU ambassadors at the start of this week that if fishing is resolved, then a wider deal would quickly fall into place. But there's no sign of a meeting of minds on fish, with the EU warning openly it may prove to be impossible. But let's remember this is the most intense of negotiations and that every public proclamation from London or Brussels will be chosen to strengthening their respective hands in what are the final days and hours of talks. 2px presentational grey line From the EU side, Mr Barnier said: "In this final stretch of talks, transparency and unity are important as ever. "Good progress, but last stumbling blocks remain. We will only sign a deal protecting EU interests and principles." On Wednesday, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also said a "narrow path" had opened up for the two sides to conclude a deal. MPs broke up for the Christmas break on Thursday evening, but Mr Gove confirmed they could be called back to the Commons if a deal is agreed between negotiators. Although there is only 14 days until the deadline, Mr Gove also said he believed there was enough time for the necessary legislation to pass before 31 December "to give businesses legal certainty". But a number of opposition MPs raised issues already facing businesses waiting to discover the outcome of talks. One Welsh MP, Jonathan Edwards, said: "I was contacted late last night by a businessman in my constituency who is reliant on imports from the continent and he can't find a haulage firm willing to carriage on his behalf due to the current delays at the ports. "He's very concerned unless this issue was resolved his business would not survive into the new year." Mr Gove said he would get in touch with the business concerne

Call Of Duty: Warzone Players Are Unhappy About Black Ops Cold War Weapons Call of Duty: Warzone now includes 30 new weapons from Black Ops Cold War and players are having trouble adapting to them. They've found that the new weapons are at a disadvantage compared to ones that have been in Warzone since March. "These guns cannot and will not be able to compete with the current Modern Warfare guns," said Redditor ruckh in a thread about the new update. "It boils down to the attachments--specifically the barrel, the suppressors, and the grips." Black Ops Cold War weapons were brought to Warzone with all of their original attachments and stat types--which are different to the ones used in Modern Warfare and Warzone. The attachments they do have can't compete with ones that were available before the update. "I am shocked this is how it played out," said another player. "I thought Cold War guns were going be deliberately better, including at least one outright broken gun, to try to spur Cold War purchases." Players have theorized that Black Ops Cold War weapons would be stronger than current Warzone weapons in order to encourage players to purchase the standalone game. Instead they've found that the recoil and lack of certain attachments for the new guns gives them a big disadvantage when compared to guns like the Kilo. Most of the ground loot in Warzone is made up of Black Ops Cold War weapons--but securing a loadout with a gun from Modern Warfare is still the preferred route to winning a gunfight. Some of the new weapons, like the MAC-10 SMG, are incredibly powerful at close range, but most gun fights in Warzone happen at medium-to-long-range. The advantage it provides is only reliable in certain situations that aren't as typical in a battle royale. The assault rifles, on the other hand, simply don't measure up to the existing Warzone weapons. One reason for this is because they don't have Warzone's strongest attachment--the monolithic suppressor. It increases both the range and and bullet velocity of most guns in Modern Warfare. Black Ops Cold War's suppressors only decreases those stats. Players don't think Black Ops Cold War weapons will be able to compete unless they're given a similar attachment. Only a small subset of players is being vocal about these changes--but they were talking about how weapon balance would be an issue before the update hit. Infinity Ward, Raven Software, and Activision are dealing with a number of issues--including one that makes players invisible--so players may have to wait before anything changes with the new weapons.

Intel Tests Mysterious Xe-LP GPU: 128 EUs at 1.4 GHz Listings in two benchmark databases reveal that Intel, or perhaps a company close to the chip giant, seems to be testing a rather mysterious unannounced graphics processor that has slightly more compute horsepower than the company's Iris Xe Max discrete GPU for notebooks. Someone has submitted benchmark results of what is called the Intel Gen12 Desktop Graphics Controller featuring 128 execution units (EUs), clocked at 1.40 GHz, and equipped with 3.03GB of memory. Given the 'Gen12' designation, the GPU is based on Intel's Xe-LP microarchitecture as other Xe microarchitectures are referred to as Gen12.x in the drivers. Since Intel's Xe-LP EUs are 8-wide, 128 EUs may be compared to 1024 stream processors of AMD or Nvidia GPUs. So far, benchmark results of the Intel Gen12 Desktop Graphics Controller with 128 EUs have been submitted to Geekbench 5 and SiSoftware databases, as found by TUM_APISAK/Twitter. The part scored 9,311 points in Geekbench 5 and 82 points in Sandra. To date, Intel has released three products featuring its Xe-LP graphics: the 11th Generation Core 'Tiger Lake' processor with up to 96 EUs at up to 1,350 MHz, the Iris Xe Max discrete GPU for notebooks with 96 EUs at up 1,650 MHz, and the Server GPU with 96 EUs at up to 1.1 GHz. Assuming that the Intel Gen12 Desktop Graphics Controller with 128 EUs runs at up to 1.4 GHz, its compute performance will be around 2.86 TFLOPS, about 13% higher when compared to that of the Iris Xe Max running at 1650 MHz (~2.53 TFLOPS). That said, it is hard to expect such a discrete GPU to beat gaming graphics cards running chips from AMD or Nvidia. Meanwhile, Intel could market it as a co-GPU for certain tasks in some niche markets. Intel has not officially announced an Iris Xe-LP GPU with 128 EUs. In fact, it is not even guaranteed that the product will actually be released. Nonetheless, it looks like Intel has something in the works.

Symphony RetailAI Named to Food Logistics’ 2020 FL100+ Top Software and Technology Providers DALLAS, Dec. 17, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Symphony RetailAI, the leading global provider of integrated AI-enabled marketing, merchandising and supply chain solutions for FMCG retailers and manufacturers, today announced that it has been named to Food Logistics’ 2020 FL100+ Top Software and Technology Providers list. The annual list honors leading software and technology providers that ensure a safe, efficient and reliable global food and beverage supply chain. Symphony RetailAI was listed in 11 categories including data synchronization, predictive analytics, supply chain management and warehouse management systems. Today’s retailers are presented with new challenges each day. There’s both a historical reliance on sales data to drive business and a desire to have a more customer-centric focus and operations. As retailers focus more on measuring every aspect of their businesses, they are creating a lot of data, which is often not converted into practical insights that help them make more effective decisions. This “micro focus” on data has broken the supply chain into micro processes that don’t work in a cohesive way. Symphony RetailAI delivers a connected, omnichannel solution suite that helps retailers deliver on their customer promises. “In addition to the existing challenges retailers face, the global COVID-19 pandemic has added complexity to the supply chain and also highlighted the supply chain’s critical nature,” said Patrick Buellet, Chief Strategy Officer, Symphony RetailAI. “The dramatic increase in online grocery volume exposed the food retail industry’s need for quicker adoption of modernized processes and technology to fuel efficiency and agility. In fact, in a survey of FMCG retailers and CPGs, Symphony RetailAI found that 89% of those surveyed believe that the events of COVID-19 are driving retailers to optimize the supply chain to support omnichannel strategies faster than anticipated.” With artificial intelligence and master data management at the core, Symphony RetailAI’s supply chain solutions enable retailers to achieve a holistic view of the customer that fuels profitable growth – connecting and automating information, processes and people through technology – to deliver on their promises to customers. The solutions leverage all available data to drive productivity and allow retailers to get granular and highly specific views of data instantaneously and remove manual elements from key processes, such as replenishment, so that they can quickly drive real change in line with customer requirements. Symphony RetailAI’s supply chain solutions help streamline the food logistics supply chain with: Omnichannel Communication – creating a smooth and transparent workflow across the business to serve the customer as quickly and cost-effectively as possible. Fulfillment – minimizing the time to customer without damaging profitability. Supplier Collaboration – delivering a high level of internal and external synchronization. “From fleet management to warehouse management to simply just track and trace along the cold food chain, these software and technology providers have definitely stepped it up to ensure cold food and beverage products continue moving along the line without incident,” said Marina Mayer, editor-in-chief, Food Logistics and Supply & Demand Chain Executive. “This pandemic has thrown the food industry a curveball, but many of these providers fast-tracked the development and deployment of their solutions to ensure food safety, traceability, visibility and quality assurance. So, to these winners and others in the industry working to make a difference, thank you.” Companies on this year’s 2020 FL100+ Top Software and Technology Providers list are profiled in the November/December 2020 print issue of Food Logistics, as well as online. ‘The world of Juicy’: Inside the brand’s website relaunch aimed at selling a lifestyle The OG velour tracksuit is back. Amid the athleisure market booming and its lookalike brands seeing success, Juicy Couture relaunched its e-commerce site on November 24. So far, its features include new styles and an improved user experience. By the first quarter of next year, it will also host a marketplace featuring pieces meant to complete the Juicy look. The site updates hint at the future of e-commerce. Many of them will also be made to the websites of brands in Juicy parent Authentic Brands Group’s portfolio — there are more than 50. What’s more, the site’s overall redesign was driven by the idea of fueling a community. “We have a core, legacy customer who is a millennial. She’ll always come to us, whether it’s for her fragrance or for a very specific tracksuit with bling,” said Alexandra Taylor, svp of marketing at Authentic Brands Group. “And now we have an [in] with the younger TikTok generation who’s starting to connect with the brand through trends; the aughts are coming back.” The brand shut down its site two weeks before the relaunch to implement new technology and introduce its new style direction with ample impact. An email capture on the site promising a notification at the time of relaunch collected 55,000 contacts, with shoppers largely discovering it through the brand’s organic social posts. The site had 150,000 active users as of December 2, said Taylor. “The demand’s been there since the beginning of the year,” she said. In the pandemic, consumers are finding comfort in athleisure, as well as nostalgic styles. In mid-October, Kim Kardashian’s Skims brand released a velour collection centered on tracksuits. Select sizes are now sold out in all but two styles. Images promoting the collection featured Paris Hiton, who drove the po[CENSORED]rity of Juicy Couture in the 2000s. Fast-fashion brands including Shein, Fashion Nova and Pretty Little Thing are also selling takes on the style, which regularly appears in viral TikTok videos. “In the last 10 years, we’ve seen the rise of the updated athleisure set,” said Taylor. “It tends to be a [seasonal] trend for brands, while we’re offering the assortment year-round.” According to Taylor, Juicy Couture sees a lift in engagement, press impressions and general interest when a competitor or competitive product hits the market, “because everyone associates the traditional velour tracksuit with Juicy.” Out of the gate, 17 styles were offered on the new site, including tracksuit pieces with high waistlines and cropped jackets. Taylor said launching with a limited selection was necessary to ensure the site was live pre-holiday and at a time aligned with the brand’s 25th anniversary. A second drop of 51 styles was released on December 11. The website’s development was also hurried, pulled off in a matter of weeks to hit the target launch date. Partners included headless commerce platform Fabric, which took a mobile-first approach and prioritized simplicity, speed and seamlessness, especially for those being redirected from Instagram, said Faisal Masud, CEO of Fabric. For Juicy’s in-house team, Fabric enabled easy access to site performance analytics and “fool-proof” updating capabilities for all pages. RevCascade powered the dropship-enabled marketplace. “The design is meant to ‘get out of the way,’ so customers can focus on the product selection,” said Masud. Ramping up direct sales and control is a goal. In February, Juicy Couture entered a licensing agreement with U.S.-based NYC Alliance, replacing its partnership with Hong Kong-based Global Brands Group, which “oversorted” the brand’s selection, said Taylor. Vertically integrated NYC Alliance now manages the brand’s design, production and distribution to sales channels, which currently include Nordstrom and Macy’s. In addition, a small capsule collection is being sold at L.A.-based Fred Segal, which was the brand’s launch partner in 1995. That partnership will grow in 2021, said Taylor, and the brand is set to enter additional sales channels early next year. “We’re really trying to rein in our distribution in the U.S.,” said Taylor. “We want to own it and focus on how we can reach our customers in a way that feels authentic to the brand.” As such, retail partners will be restricted to those that will “embrace the brand,” she said. And the product selection will be made up of key, heritage pieces and select “newness” that’s set to sell through. “We’re not going to be left with extra inventory,” she said. Paid marketing around the relaunch has focused on Instagram and TikTok, for reaching “the younger generation,” and Facebook, for the “legacy customer,” said Taylor. Juicy Couture has also tapped paid and gifted influencers from ABG’s proprietary network of 3,000 creators to drive awareness, as well as traffic and conversion. The brand will invest in retargeting campaigns as the site is fine-tuned and stocked with more product. Collaborations are set to remain a key strategy for reaching new audiences. Among ABG’s brands, Juicy Couture is the most-requested collaboration partner after Judith Leiber, said Taylor. In early September, it launched a collab with Italian sportswear brand Kappa, with Sofia Richie as its campaign model. In late October, it followed that up with vegan apparel brand Apparis on a collab that included a faux-fur tracksuit. And on December 7, it launched an underwear line with sustainable intimates brand Parade. The site will soon feature a marketplace selling its collaborations, as well as its licensed products — like its fragrances, managed by Revlon, which are currently sold on juicycouturebeauty.com. It will also house products by “like-minded brands across categories” that the brand has not yet entered. Those brands will include some ABG brands, among others, said Taylor. Juicy Couture plans to launch new categories in the U.S. in 2021. Juicy Couture Luggage is set to launch in the coming weeks. “[The site] is an opportunity for us to bring the whole world of Juicy — that full lifestyle — to our customer,” said Taylor. She said that Juicy Couture’s licensed partners, which manage its international markets including China and Europe, have expanded the brand locally to include widespread categories, from footwear to denim. All reflect the brand’s signature “style, glamour and L.A. heritage,” she said, hinting at plans to follow suit. ABG will be rolling out marketplace capabilities across many of its brands over the next year, Taylor said. In addition, ABG has a portfolio-wide loyalty program in the works, as reported by Glossy in November. Juicy Couture was acquired by Authentic Brands Group in 2013 for $195 million, after founders Gela Nash-Taylor and Pamela Skaist-Levy sold the company in 2003 to Liz Claiborne Inc. At its peak, in the mid-aughts, it was the unofficial outfitter of Hilton and Nicole Richie’s “The Simple Life,” had more than 100 brand stores and pulled in $605 million in annual sales. In step with closing its stores, the brand started selling at Kohl’s in 2014. But it was given new life in 2016 after teaming with Vetements on a collaboration that was shown on the runway. Taylor, who joined ABG with Juicy Couture’s acquisition, said the idea for the tracksuit, launched in 2001, was centered on embracing comfort, glamorously. “It was tongue-in-cheek, at the time,” she said. “But it makes a lot of sense now.”

[Auto] Xpeng launches in Europe with G3 electric crossover
Angrry.exe™ posted a topic in Auto / Moto
Xpeng launches in Europe with G3 electric crossover The G3 is promised to have a WLTP-certified range of 280 miles from a 66kWh battery pack and can charge its battery from 30% to 80% in 30 minutes. It has also been awarded five stars in China’s C-NCAP crash tests. Moreover, the promised price point of around £30,000 for this model would mark out Xpeng as especially competitive. Xpeng, which sold its first car in 2018 and is now listed on the New York Stock Exchange, currently builds two models on its self-developed EV platform. The G3 and the P7 sports saloon will be joined by two new models in 2021 and 2022. The firm has developed its own skateboard architecture, called SEPA, which leans heavily on external sensors. It uses 12 ultrasonic radar sensors, eight high-definition cameras and three millimetrewave radar sensors. Xpeng says the car currently has ‘level 2.5’ autonomous driving and self-parking capabilities. The self-developed vehicle operating system makes significant and regular use of over-the-air software updates, according to Xpeng’s own Chinese-market data from existing customer cars. Brian Gu, Xpeng’s vice chairman and president, told Autocar the company is prepared to take a long-term view on establishing a domestic Chinese brand in Europe. “We believe that technology is key in changing people’s perceptions and we note that [Korean] brands such as Samsung and Kia have succeeded,” Gu said. “We also think that the legacy European auto brands might not have the same brand advantages in the market for EVs. We want to build a long-lasting presence. It is not easy to get a strong brand globally, but we are very confident in our product.” Gu pointed out that the SEPA architecture uses chipsets from global giants Qualcomm and Nvidia, underlining the potential for new types of brand quality in automotive production. Gu said the G3’s roll-out in Norway – supported by its own staff and engineers – would also be used as the start of research into how Xpeng will retail and support its vehicles in the medium term as the brand seeks to establish itself in the new vehicle market. -
Covid rules still to be relaxed over Christmas in UK A relaxation of coronavirus rules over Christmas will still go ahead despite calls for them to be toughened, the four UK nations have agreed. But sterner warnings will be issued to urge people to keep social contact low. UK leaders have come under pressure to review the five-day plan as Covid infections continue to rise in Wales and parts of south-east England. Only two households are advised to mix in Wales, under new stricter advice. Prime Minister Boris Johnson told the House of Commons: "We should exercise extreme caution in the way we celebrate Christmas." He said discussions on Wednesday morning had resulted in "unanimous agreement" between the four UK nations "that we should proceed in principle with the existing regulations because we don't want to criminalise people's long-made plans". However, he added it was "absolutely vital that people should, at this very, very tricky time, exercise a high degree of personal responsibility". He urged people to be particularly careful when they come into contact with vulnerable people - and should avoid contact with elderly people "wherever possible". A statement is expected soon to confirm the details of Wednesday morning's talks. 2px presentational grey line What are the Christmas rules? Between 23 and 27 December, you can form a "Christmas bubble" comprised of people from three households You can travel between tiers and between UK nations to meet your bubble You can only meet in homes, places of worship or public outdoor spaces - not pubs or restaurants You can meet people outside your bubble according to your local rules 2px presentational grey line Earlier, cabinet minister Robert Jenrick urged the public to "use their own judgement" on who to see over the five days of relaxed rules, from 23 to 27 December. Mr Jenrick said the government "can't legislate for every eventuality" so the law which sets out the Christmas relaxations "remains unchanged". However, Mr Jenrick told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that further guidance would be published to show infection rates are rising in many parts of the country, and to reflect that Covid cases surged in parts of the US following the Thanksgiving holiday. How to avoid catching Covid this Christmas What are the rules for meeting up at Christmas? An information campaign is expected to be launched in the days running up to Christmas, with people being urged to think carefully about bubbling with elderly or at-risk relatives. Mr Jenrick said based on the further guidance, the government would ask people to "weigh up the risks to their own loved ones" and "exercise their own good judgement" about their Christmas plans. "You can come together as three families and bubble for up to five days - but I suspect many, many people across the country will choose to do less than that, to protect themselves, their loved ones, and broader society," he said. The government's Christmas travel adviser, Sir Peter Hendy, said ministers' message to the public would be "stay local if you can". He told MPs on the Transport Committee he was confident there would be no overcrowding on trains during the festive period, but urged passengers to book tickets early. Labour has called for the measures over Christmas to be reviewed. Shadow communities secretary Steve Reed told BBC Breakfast that the four UK nations should reconsider whether the proposed easing of restrictions was safe, "given what we now know about the failure of [England's] tiered system to control the rate of infection". It comes after two leading journals said the "rash" decision to ease restrictions would "cost many lives". In a joint editorial, the British Medical Journal and Health Service Journal stressed that demand on the NHS was increasing, adding that a new strain of coronavirus - identified in both England and Wales - "has introduced further potential jeopardy". Graham Medley, a member of the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage), said the "major driver" for how much the disease spreads over the five-day Christmas period was the infection prevalence - and that the current prevalence had started to rise "really quite rapidly in some places". "When the rules were made about Christmas, we didn't know what that prevalence was going to be," Prof Medley told the Today programme. As for the risk of the NHS becoming overwhelmed, he said: "We don't have much headroom." Patients face 12-hour wait as hospital struggles New Covid strain: How worried should we be? After the first round of talks on Tuesday, a UK government source said they were "keen to maintain a UK-wide approach". Scotland's First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, had earlier told the Scottish Parliament there was a "case" for tightening the planned freedoms to combat a rise in infections. In Wales, First Minister, Mark Drakeford, said "the choice is a grim one", but the current plans were a "hard-won agreement" he would not put aside "lightly". A spokeswoman for Northern Ireland's First Minister Arlene Foster and Deputy First Minister Michelle O'Neill said they would be holding discussions with their medical and scientific advisers. Despite the significant pressure for a rethink, leaders from the UK are likely to stick to the deal they agreed last month. There are no plans for a change of regulations in England - and it's unlikely Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland will make changes either. But there are real concerns among decision makers about the impact the relaxations could have - in particular the number of people who will be travelling across the UK. So you can expect to hear much stronger advice that just because you can mix, that doesn't mean you should. Ministers are preparing to warn people they should limit their interactions before forming a Christmas bubble, that they should think carefully before mixing with elderly or at-risk relatives, and that where possible people should stay local and avoid travel. Leaders are still trying to strike a balance between allowing people to visit relatives who they may not have seen for months, without allowing the virus to run rampant. But many still believe that relaxing rules just as many areas are seeing a significant increase in cases is too risky, and will lead to a considerably more difficult period at the start of next year. Presentational grey line The resumption of talks comes as nearly 10.8 million people in London, and parts of Essex and Hertfordshire joined England's toughest tier of restrictions at 00:01 GMT. It means some 34 million people in England are now living under the toughest rules - around 61% of England's po[CENSORED]tion. Banner Under tier three - very high alert - rules, pubs and restaurants must close, except for takeaway and delivery, and indoor entertainment venues such as theatres, bowling alleys and cinemas must remain shut. Ministers are also due to review other English tiers today - with an announcement due on Thursday. On Tuesday, the Scottish government announced that three council areas - Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and East Lothian - are to have tougher restrictions imposed from Friday in a bid to reverse rising numbers of cases. It was also announced that a further 506 people in the UK had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19, bringing the total to 64,908. Another 18,450 infections were confirmed.

Among Us Out Now On Nintendo Switch With Cross-Play Nintendo closed out Tuesday's indie-focused video presentation with what was perhaps its biggest announcement of the day: The hit deception game Among Us is coming to Switch, and like a few other titles spotlighted during the broadcast, it's available to purchase through the eShop right now. Although it originally released in 2018, Among Us was one of this year's biggest breakout successes, skyrocketing in po[CENSORED]rity on Twitch thanks to its blend of social elements and subterfuge. Nintendo confirmed to GameSpot that the Switch version of Among Us supports cross-play with other platforms, which has been key to its success on PC and iOS/Android. There was no word on any additional features coming to this versions of the game, although with cross-play, feature parity is to be expected. This version of Among Us costs $5 USD, much like the PC version; on mobile, an ad-supported version can be downloaded for free. Developer Innersloth had been working on a sequel to Among Us, but the studio recently announced that it would be scrapping that follow-up and instead focusing on supporting the original game with that planned content. "All of the content we had planned for Among Us 2 will instead go into Among Us 1," the studio wrote in a blog post. "This is probably the more difficult choice because it means going deep into the core code of the game and reworking several parts of it. We have lots of things planned and we're excited to bring new content to everyone as you continue to enjoy playing." Among Us isn't the only game to surprise launch on Switch this week. The po[CENSORED]r action-puzzler Grindstone also released on Nintendo's hybrid system following the Indie World stream, as did the laid-back community sim game Calico. There were a few other surprise announcements during the presentation. Spelunky and Spelunky 2 are both coming to Nintendo Switch next summer, while Super Meat Boy Forever hits the console this month, on December 23. You can catch up on all the biggest news from the presentation in our Indie World recap.

Nvidia Hosting GeForce Event in January: New GPUs Coming? Nvidia said on Wednesday that it would host its "GeForce RTX: Game On" event in mid-January to reveal the "latest innovations in gaming and graphics." The company naturally did not give a clue about the exact nature of the announcement, but it will definitely cover consumer graphics. GeForce RTX: Game On will take place on January 12, 2021, at 9:00 AM PST. The broadcast will be presented by Jeff Fisher, senior vice president of Nvidia's GeForce business, so it will more than likely cover a GeForce product or products. The broadcast will take place at the time of virtual CES, which starts on January 11 and ends on January 14. Given the scope of the trade show, it is logical for Nvidia to use it for a significant announcement. Yesterday it was reported that Nvidia might formally introduce its cheapest Ampere GPU yet — the GeForce RTX 3060 — which is a significant launch. Meanwhile, Nvidia could also unveil its first notebook GeForce RTX GPUs based on the Ampere architecture at CES, considering how po[CENSORED]r gaming laptops are today. Over the past few weeks Nvidia's management said that it had multiple Ampere-powered products in the pipeline. We do not know for sure what Nvidia is planning to reveal on January 12, 2021, but the company says it will be an important announcement for gaming, so stay tuned.
