  20. Specialists inject a rabbit during the development of a vaccine against Covid-19 in animals, in Vladimir, Russia on December 9, 2020. (CNN)As governments across the globe scramble to secure Covid-19 vaccine doses for humans, Russia has registered the world's first coronavirus vaccine for animals, state media outlet TASS reported Wednesday. The vaccine is named Carnivak-Cov, TASS said, citing Konstantin Savenkov, the deputy head of Russia's Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance (Rosselkhoznadzor.) "Carnivak-Cov, a sorbate inactivated vaccine against the coronavirus infection for carnivorous animals, developed by Rosselkhoznadzor's Federal Center for Animal Health, has been registered in Russia. So far, it is the world's first and only product for preventing Covid-19 in animals," Savenkov said Wednesday. The vaccine will likely go into mass production as early as April, according to the TASS report. Clinical trials of Carnivak-Cov began last October, Savenkov said. The research involved dogs, cats, foxes, Arctic foxes, minks and other animals. Savenkov said all the vaccinated animals developed antibodies and that the outcome of the research gave Russia "grounds to conclude that the vaccine is safe and has strong immunogenic effect." The report said that the effect of the vaccine "is estimated to last no less than six months," quoting Savenkov. "According to Russian scientists, the use of the vaccine can prevent further mutations of the virus" the official said, adding that multiple firms from Greece, Poland and Austria plan to buy the vaccine. Savenkov added that companies from the US, Canada and Singapore have also "demonstrated interest." In May last year, Denmark culled 17 million minks over concerns the animals were spreading a mutated form of coronavirus. A new report from the World Health Organization has also said Covid-19 probably spread to people through an animal. Russia was the first country in the world last year to approve a coronavirus vaccine in humans, though its early rollout before Phase 3 trials had finished was criticized globally. Interim analysis of the Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine released in February suggests that it is 91.6% effective against symptomatic Covid-19 and 100% effective against severe and moderate

  21. Auto insurance providers are facing mounting pressure from clients and various consumer groups, who are demanding bigger refunds amid a significant reduction in claims during the pandemic, according to a Forbes report. In California, the country’s largest insurance market, Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara has issued a directive ordering car insurers to provide information on how the additional rebates will be paid out to policyholders, who he said were “overcharged” last year as the pandemic decreased accident risks. An analysis by the insurance commissioner’s office obtained by Forbes showed that from March to September 2020, the 10 largest auto insurers in the state refunded an average of 9% in premiums, when they should have returned 17%. By December, the number of insurers offering partial refunds dropped to four. “Returning insurance premiums is a stimulus that people need right now, and they deserve it as long as they continue to drive less and our roads are safer as a result,” Lara said in a YouTube video. His order comes as several policyholders in Nevada have sued their auto insurance providers, accusing them of overcharging during the pandemic, when the number of accidents and miles driven has declined. Carmen Balber, executive director of the California group Consumer Watchdog, told Forbes that these lawsuits, along with Lara’s demand, could force car insurers across the US to pay out additional refunds to policyholders. “Every insurance commissioner in the country has the power to shine a spotlight on the profits auto insurance companies are making in their state and say that consumers are owed more,” she said. In Massachusetts, the Division of Insurance followed Lara’s lead asking insurers to submit rate filings, which include data about claims and expenses in 2020, not later than June 30. The department said it wanted to make sure auto insurers are factoring in “pandemic-related shifts in vehicle traffic” in setting premiums. However, the Center for Economic Justice revealed that besides Lara, no other state insurance commissioner has required insurers to issue refunds to policyholders. Car insurance providers across the country, apart from those in California, have been returning money to clients on a voluntary basis. The group also told Forbes that auto insurers have seen claims dip by $25 million since the pandemic began but have returned less than half of that amount to customers. It added that it has been working with the Consumer Federation of America in urging state insurance commissioners to demand insurers to return money that policyholders deserve. In response, the American Property Casualty Insurance Association (APCIA) said that auto insurers have provided more than $14 billion in refunds and credits to customers in 2020 to reflect reduced traffic during the pandemic. “Insurers understood the urgency of helping businesses and individuals recover from the unprecedented crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and took immediate action to adapt premiums when driving was reduced in 2020,” said Mark Sektnan, vice president of the trade group, in a statement obtained by Forbes. “Insurers continue to work with policyholders to adjust their policies in 2021.”

  22. Go for glow—this has been the mantra for beauty influencers, experts and aficionados during the pandemic. What may have started as DIY face masks and scrubs has now moved into the exciting world of edible beauty. “With growing concern over use of harmful chemicals in cosmetics, customers are now looking for more natural, food-based ingredients in them. This use of edible grade ingredients in cosmetics and beauty products gives customers an assurance of using safe products on their skin and hair,” says Chaitanya Nallan, co-founder, Vedix, an ayurvedic beauty brand. Akshay Pai, founder and CEO, Nutrova, a health supplements company, adds that the cells in our skin and hair depend on the nutrients we consume, to grow and thrive. Providing them the right nutrients can ensure that our skin and hair are at their healthiest. “We carried out a first-of-its-kind clinical study on the effect of a drink containing collagen peptides on the skin health of Indian women (which was published in the international Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology). The study showed dramatic improvements to skin health. The body of data supporting the effects of nutrition on skin and hair health continues to grow, setting a strong foundation for ingestible beauty,” says Pai. Sushant Raorane, co-founder and director, Adroit Biomed, explains: “Edible beauty isn’t just about supplements and beauty-from-within products; it’s about the holistic approach towards the growth of innovative evidence-based beauty industry. Since the past few years, edible beauty products have become quite po[CENSORED]r as people started to understand the significance of beauty-from-within,” he says.

  25. XMG Announces Rocket Lake, RTX 3080-Equipped 'Ultra 17' Gaming Laptop XMG today announced its first laptop equipped with Intel's new Rocket Lake processors, interchangeable RTX 30 Series graphics, and a bevy of other features that are supposed to ease the pain enthusiasts have suffered because of the ongoing chip shortage. It's called the Ultra 17, and the first units could reach consumers as early as May. Let's start with the CPU. The XMG Ultra 17 can be configured with 10th Gen Core processors for people willing to sacrifice performance for affordability, but the focus is on the 11th Gen CPUs that debuted today. XMG offers seven models: the i5-11500, 11600, and 11600K; the i7-11700 and 11700K; and the i9-11900 and 11900K. Check out our review of the i9-11900K and the i5-11600K for details on their performance. The company offers fewer graphics options—just the GeForce RTX 3060 (6GB), 3070 (8GB), and 3080 (16GB). But there's a lot of flexibility here, too, with XMG claiming that "this GPU takes the form of an interchangeable card, opposed to being soldered into the mainboard," and that it's "the first graphics card in the mobile sector that is already connected via a full 16 PCI Express 4.0 lanes" and capable of a TGP of 165W. XMG also offers a bunch of M.2 SSD storage options between 200GB and 2TB from a variety of manufacturers, two different Wi-Fi modules, and support for up to 128GB (4 x 32GB) of DDR4-3200 memory from Samsung. (As well as smaller kits from Crucial.) The keyboard features per-key RGB back-lighting and is available in many languages, too, in case you worried the company had forgotten to add pretty lights. But the main arguments for the Ultra 17 being a desktop replacement—aside from the CPU and GPU of course—are the laptop's display and connectivity options. There are two 17.3-inch display options: a 1080p version with a 300Hz refresh rate and a 4K version with a 60Hz refresh rate that also covers 100% of the Adobe RGB spectrum. Both versions of the display offer Nvidia G-Sync support as well.

  28. This DIY Kit Turns Your Game Boy Advance SP Into An Arcade The Game Boy Advance SP is one of the best handheld systems ever made, fixing nearly every issue the original Game Boy Advance model had while also lookin a whole lot sleeker. It's also, apparently, the perfect system to use in a DIY-style tiny arcade kit, and you can buy one for yourself now. Available in a variety of styles from the Etsy seller RetroJoyGaming, these Game Boy Advance mini arcade kits come with pre-sized pieces of wood that have been stained and oiled, leaving room for you to pop your open system in and start gaming like you're playing on an arcade cabinet. There are even little marked cutouts for where the shoulder and power buttons go so you don't need to remove it to turn it off or play a more complex game. You'll also get a design template in case you want to then add your own custom artwork to it, and you can pop your system back out if you want to use it the standard way again. because of the cartridge slot being on the bottom, it's also easier to swap out a game when you want to play something new. Sure, there aren't any coins, but you can always cut out your own little slot to pretend. As an optional mod, you can add a tiny joystick to the control pad, though this does require drilling through the existing pad and screwing it in place and should really only be done if you don't plan on using the Game Boy Advance SP for anything else. It's certainly a unique take on the at-home arcade space and quite a bit cheaper than the pre-made machines available from other companies. With lots of arcade ports available on the Game Boy Advance, as well, it'll feel even more authentic to play on it.

  29. Raspberry Pi Zero W Streams Live Video from Stratosphere We love the Raspberry Pi and would do anything to elevate its status when it's rightly deserved but we can't top the efforts of the Project Horus team who recently launched a Pi Zero into the Earth's stratosphere. Not only did they take our favorite SBC to a new level but they also used it to stream a live video of the journey to viewers around the world. The project is officially called Horus 55. It relies on a main component known as the DVB-S Payload, developed by makers Mark VK5QI and Peter VK5KX over the past year. It's attached to a weather balloon and designed to transmit flight data in real-time. Inside is a Raspberry Pi Zero W, making this one of the best Raspberry Pi projects we've ever seen leave the troposphere. The Pi Zero was used to capture video input for transmission back to the ground station. It didn't take much to make the unit mobile, the Raspberry Pi system was powered using eight AA batteries. According to the Horus 55 website, the flight video was live-streamed to YouTube where hundreds of viewers got a first-hand view of the experiment. Once the balloon ruptured, the payload came crashing back to Earth. Viewers were able to see part of the descent in real-time. The unit landed on private property, but the owners were kind enough to allow the team to retrieve their hard work.

  30. Weekend poll: Are you going to buy a OnePlus 9 or 9 Pro? The 2021 smartphone season is starting to pick up, and last week OnePlus released its 9 series of phones, following up on last year's OnePlus 8T and OnePlus 8 series. If you were interested in either phone, then you've probably read our reviews for the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro by now and weighed your various options. So, we're curious to know if you are planning to get either. Opinions will certainly vary, but we felt a little more critical of both the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro than the models they replaced. OnePlus's much-hyped Hasselblad partnership sadly didn't end up improving photography performance as much as we'd have liked, and prices continue to creep up even as the company's software update commitment remains stuck in 2018. In the face of the Galaxy S21 series, which saw prices drop in 2021 compared to last year's models, It's pretty hard for us to recommend a OnePlus flagship. Still, either phone could present the right mix of features at the right price for the right person. OnePlus is almost alone in offering an unlockable bootloader at this price point, making them the go-to phones for the root and ROM crowd, and not everyone likes Samsung's software. That's not to mention OnePlus's super-fast charging, which is a surprisingly useful feature and which no other phone in the US comes near. I can't presume to dictate your taste to you — everyone values different things in a smartphone, as last week's poll proves. But if you are in the market for a smartphone, are you sold on a OnePlus 9 or 9 Pro already, or will you give them a pass?

  31. Fortnite Zero Crisis Finale Will Leave The Game Next Week Fortnite Season 6 kicked off with the game's first-ever single-player event, the Zero Crisis Finale. If you missed it when it debuted last week, the solo nature of the event meant it could be accessed at any time after its debut on March 16, but that window is soon closing. The Fortnite Zero Crisis Finale playlist will leave the game next week during the game's regularly scheduled downtime. Epic hasn't given a precise date and time yet, but the team has assured fans that despite this week's challenges mostly going live on Tuesday, the normal Thursday schedule will resume for the rest of the season. That suggests your last chance to play the Zero Crisis Finale will be sometime late Wednesday or early Thursday depending on your time zone. Of course, you could also just watch it in the video below. If you'd rather play it yourself, we won't spoil it all. The story mission's total runtime is less than 15 minutes, including a cinematic directed by the Russo Brothers, and features a playable section that lets you try and fix the Zero Point which floated ominously at the center of the Season 5 map. During the Zero Crisis Finale, you'll also come face to face with The Foundation, a mystery character whom fans believe is secretly portrayed by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. On top of all that, you'll see some fun crossovers, like Ellen Ripley and Sarah Conner teaming up to take on a xenomorph and a T-800, or Kratos struggling to take down an anthropomorphized stack of pancakes. Yeah, Fortnite gets pretty weird. Note that you can use any of your favorite cosmetics in the mission, so be sure to set your favorite hero as active before you jump into the playlist if you want to see them helping Agent Jones, The Foundation, and other characters in their quest to save the Fortnite multiverse. As for what's new since the Zero Crisis Finale, the Season 6 map changes come as a direct result of your mission's fallout.

  32. Upton Talks Raspberry Pi SoC: Why We Named it RP2040 In a recent Elektor "Meet the Engineers – Part 1" livestream Raspberry Pi co-founder Eben Upton and SparkFun founder Nathan Seidle discussed their RP2040 boards and, during the livestream, Upton explained the meaning of the digits in the RP2040 name and explored the possible future of the chip which powers the Raspberry Pi Pico, a chip which may only be seen in one more official board. The heart of the Raspberry Pi Pico and other partner boards is the RP2040, a system on chip that provides the Arm Cortex M0+ running at up to 133 MHz with 264KB of SRAM. In the livestream, Upton decoded the RP2040 name. The number 2 is for two cores because the RP2040's CPU is dual core. The number 0 is for the CPU, an Arm Cortex M0+, the number 4 is for 256KB of RAM 2 ^ 4 x 16KB. The final digit, 0 refers to no flash. Upton then went on to invent another chip to illustrate the convention using a quad core Arm M3 CPU with 256KB of RAM and no flash which he said would be called a 4340, if it existed. Upton went on to say that, if he can do one more chip with his naming convention, then it will be successful. Later in the stream, Upton revealed that "we are unlikely to do more than one or two products with RP2040 in them" so the next 'Pi Silicon' board could be the last from Raspberry Pi to feature the RP2040. Further in the livestream, Upton explained that the Raspberry Pi Pico is in a backlog, with 1.1 million orders being taken and 3 to 400,000 orders being shipped. This leaves a backlog of approximately 800,000 Raspberry Pi Picos, and there are around 60 to 80,000 chips manufactured per week. The best case scenario is that the backlog is cleared in ten weeks but Upton later mentioned that it may take a full quarter. The Raspberry Pi Foundation is not alone in producing RP2040 boards. There are partners such as SparkFun who have three RP2040 boards ready for sale. These include the SparkFun Pro Micro RP2040, which is a DIP package chip similar to the Pico in layout and the SparkFun Thing Plus RP2040, which Seidle confirmed is compatible with Adafruit's Feather form factor and features a full 16MB of flash storage. The curve ball of the three SparkFun boards is the MicroMod RP2040 Processor, a board that resembles an M.2 device and requires a carrier board to break out the GPIO pins. The ultimate goal of this board is to be embedded in custom projects. Further into the call, Upton explained that innovation doesn't just come from one organization and that the community is where the best ideas come from. "Even though we are in a shortage situation for our own product, we are still diverting quite substantial amounts of silicon to partner products," he said. Other partners are Adafruit, which makes the Feather RP2040, Pimoroni with its Tiny 2040 and Arduino with the Nano RP2040 Connect. During the livestream we took part in the Q&A and asked if the RP2040 would find its way onto 'mainstream' Raspberry Pi boards such as the model B. Upton explained that there is "there's no money in the bill of materials for it." In effect, this means that cost of manufacturing a regular Pi with an RP2040 on it would be too high to maintain the current price structure. Upton further explained that there is "no bill of materials space for a 10 cent ADC (Analog to Digital Converter) , there wouldn't be room for an RP2040 in there". Will some of the technology make its way on to future Raspberry Pis? "We are a long way away from a Raspberry Pi 5," Upton said. "Will the capabilities and some of the technologies make their way into future Raspberry Pi products? Almost certainly". Upton also stated that he would love to see the Programmable IO of the Raspberry Pi Pico make its way to the Raspberry Pi.
