Two British-Israeli sisters have been killed and their mother has been injured in a shooting in the occupied West Bank. They were in a car that crashed after being shot at near the Hamra Junction, in the north of the Jordan Valley. The mayor of the settlement of Efrat said the sisters, who were in their 20s, and their 48-year-old mother lived there and were immigrants from the UK. The UK Foreign Office said it was "saddened" by the news. "We are saddened to hear about the deaths of two British-Israeli citizens and the serious injuries sustained by a third individual," a statement said. The Israeli military said its forces were blocking roads in the area and had "started a pursuit of the terrorists". The shooting took place hours after Israeli warplanes carried out air strikes in southern Lebanon and the Gaza Strip. The military said they were in retaliation for the biggest rocket attack on Israel launched from Lebanon for 17 years, which it blamed on the Palestinian militant group Hamas. The rocket barrage followed two nights of Israeli police raids at the al-Aqsa mosque in occupied East Jerusalem that caused anger across the region. Israel strikes Lebanon and Gaza after rocket fire Later on Friday, Israel said one person had died and several others had been injured in a separate shooting incident in Tel Aviv. The Israel military said the earlier incident in the Jordan Valley was initially reported as a collision between an Israeli car and a Palestinian car. But when troops arrived they found several bullet holes in the Israeli vehicle and determined that it was an attack. Israeli public broadcaster Kan reported that 22 bullet casings were found, apparently from a Kalashnikov assault rifle. A volunteer medic with the United Hatzalah ambulance service said he rushed to the scene and found the three victims in a critical condition. Together with other first responders, I performed CPR on the injured in an attempt to save their lives," Oded Shabbat said. "One injured person was transported by helicopter to the hospital for further care." The Efrat Local Council said in a Facebook post that the three women were a mother and her two daughters who lived in the West Bank settlement, which is south of Jerusalem. It added that it was not yet permitted to identify them. The mayor of Efrat, Oded Revivi, said the family were immigrants from the UK, originally from London, and that they were travelling to Tiberius, located on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, for a holiday when the attack happened. Israeli media also cited Mr Revivi as saying that the sisters' father had been driving ahead of them in another car when theirs was attacked. He reportedly turned around and arrived at the scene to find his wife and daughters being treated by paramedics. The head of the Israeli military's Central Command, which oversees the West Bank, called it an "extremely severe terrorist attack" and promised that its troops knew how to find those responsible. "We are reinforcing forces in all sectors. We were unable to prevent this attack, but we will do everything we can to prevent the following attacks," Maj-Gen Yehuda Fuchs added. Israel Police commissioner Kobi Shabtai meanwhile called on all Israelis with firearms licences to start carrying their weapons. "This is a murderous attack that reminds us how relevant the threat of terrorism in its various forms is," he said. Hamas did not claim it was behind the shooting but praised it as "a natural response to [Israel's] ongoing crimes against the al-Aqsa mosque and its barbaric aggression against Lebanon and the steadfast Gaza". There has been an intensification of violence between Israel and the Palestinians since the start of this year. More than 90 Palestinians - militants and civilians - have been killed by Israeli forces. If those behind Friday's shooting are confirmed to be Palestinian, then 17 Israelis and a Ukrainian - all civilians, except for an Israeli paramilitary police officer - have been killed in Palestinian attacks [https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-65211160]1 point

New plans for post-Brexit border checks on goods coming into the UK will deter many EU suppliers and push up food prices, a trade body has said. The government says its proposals will prevent delays by reducing the need for physical checks for many goods. But the Cold Chain Federation said it was "deeply concerned" by the complex forms and costs involved to exporters. The Cabinet Office said it was a "huge step forward for the safety, security and efficiency of our borders". The plans - which have been delayed several times - are designed to introduce checks the UK is required to make under its Brexit trade agreement with the EU. Under the draft proposals published by the government there would be: Testing of animal and plant products to protect against diseases such as African swine fever and Xylella Checks carried out away from ports to avoid scenes witnessed at Dover last weekend One digital system allowing the customs and regulatory process to be streamlined via a "single trade window" allowing traders to submit information about goods A pilot trusted-trader scheme for frequent importers Health certificates for animal and plant products from the EU by 31 October. But Shane Brennan, chief executive of the Cold Chain Federation, which represents chilled food traders, told the BBC's Today programme that the government had not followed through on promises of a regime to be "radically redesigned and rethought". "Imagine you're a UK and EU food exporter of Parma ham or buffalo mozzarella. As of October you need to know more complex rules, find a local vet, pay them between €200-700 to fill in complex forms, find a specialist haulier, pay a customs agent and pay UK inspection charges of up to £42. "A significant number of those types of exporters will choose not to do it," he said. Brexit import checks delayed for fourth time Businesses criticise delays in EU import checks UK measures to tackle African Swine Fever threat Mr Brennan said if the draft proposals went through as planned there would be a "painful realignment with significant short-term disruption" for the UK. "Nothing in these plans is going to stop that from happening. We will get food from around the world but it will be more expensive, there will be less choice, it will be slower and more complicated to do." Marco Forgione, director general of the Institute of Export and International Trade, told the BBC it was important small businesses have "the knowledge, the expertise and the support to cope with the new processes and requirements". However, he said he supported the "truly digital" plans and claimed one European food provider the institute was working with said it would reduce its costs by up to £30m a year through the digital-first approach. Cabinet Office minister Baroness Neville-Rolfe said: "Our proposals strike a balance between giving consumers and businesses confidence while reducing the costs and friction for businesses, which in turn will help to grow the economy." However, the Liberal Democrats said the new model would "make trade between us and Europe harder". "The government's claims that these plans are going to ease trading chaos are downright dishonest," said Lib Dem Treasury spokeswoman Sarah Olney. The government will spend six weeks consulting with business before publishing a final model for trade checks later in the year. https://www.bbc.com/news/business-651997051 point

One of the Bengal tigers rescued during the operation of the State of Mexico Prosecutor's Office. There are the photos. A white lion lying quietly in the sun, an African tiger sleeping in the shade of his cage, and a white fox prowling the grounds. The search carried out by the authorities in a piece of land in the State of Mexico has revealed 47 live animals, seven stuffed exotic animals, and several clandestine taps for the huachicoleo, the illegal extraction of fuel for sale. The police have arrested eight people and the property has been secured until they determine what they are going to do with the animals. Upon entering the property, the agents found 25 exotic animals. In addition to the lion and the tiger, there were two pumas, a Bengal tiger, a deer, a gray fox, a coyote, an owl, and several eagles, "among others," adds the Prosecutor's Office in its report. Inside the house there were 7 stuffed animals. One of the photos shows a deer in an awkward position, with its hind legs in the air, as if it is in full flight from the stuffed fox behind it. The first clues suggest that, to finance this kind of private zoo, the detainees were selling stolen fuel. The property had everything necessary to carry out this activity: a container with 14,000 liters of diesel, buses, machinery, pipes, motorcycles, and an installation connected to the subsoil that could possibly lead to a clandestine intake of hydrocarbons. A possible clandestine tap for water extraction was also found, reports the Prosecutor's Office. The regulation on exotic animals in Mexico varies depending on the animal in question. The Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat) considers that tigers cannot be taken for a walk or be considered pets, because they are predators and are regulated by the General Law of Wildlife. Even so, Mexican laws allow you to have an exotic animal as long as they are not considered endangered, such as the scarlet macaw or howler monkey. In addition, the papers must be in order and the animal must receive dignified and respectful treatment. The authorities have not reported on the status of the animals found on the property. The images that the Prosecutor's Office has released show the lions and tigers, apparently, in good condition. Although they have not left the enclosure in which they have been confined for a long time. The laws allow having these animals but not walking them, because they are considered too dangerous for the general po[CENSORED]tion. Although getting them is becoming easier thanks to social networks. https://elpais.com/mexico/2023-04-06/dos-pumas-un-tigre-de-bengala-y-un-leon-blanco-la-policia-encuentra-47-animales-en-un-predio-del-estado-de-mexico.html1 point

In central Paris, riot police intervened to disperse protesters after objects were thrown and containers were set on fire. During the protests a fire broke out in the marquee of the cafe where President Emmanuel Macron celebrated his electoral victory. The police fired tear gas and charged the protesters. Similar minor incidents were reported in other cities. The Ministry of the Interior deployed 11,500 agents throughout France. The policing of protests has become a national debate in its own right. Complaints of the use of disproportionate force by the police have returned. France's interior ministry has blamed the radical left as it has done since the start of the protests. https://es.euronews.com/2023/04/06/francia-la-mayoria-de-las-protestas-han-transcurrido-sin-incidentes1 point

The animals at North Ferriby Riding for the Disabled provide therapy for people with disabilities An animal charity that helps people with disabilities has hit out after its site was broken into and vandalised. North Ferriby Riding for the Disabled said it was "absolutely horrified" to find its vehicle had been driven onto a field of alpacas, ponies and sheep. Volunteer Jill Spriggs said the animals were left "traumatised" as the culprits damaged a fence during their buggy joyride early on Wednesday. Police said they were investigating reports of a burglary at the centre.Volunteer Jill Spriggs described the break-in as "really despicable" Ms Spriggs said the vandals smashed one CCTV camera but the incident had been caught on one of the centre's other CCTV cameras. She said volunteers arrived at the centre on Riverside Walkway to discover its buggy had been "hotwired" and used for a joyride around the field before it was rammed into a fence causing significant damage. "It's just so sad and really, really devastating that somebody could do this to a charity," said Ms Spriggs. "It's not only the cost of things that it takes to repair, its the violation of having somebody up here in the middle of the night and the trauma to the animals, stressing them out, but they are thankfully recovering from that now."The charity has started an online fundraising campaign to pay for repairs and buy a new vehicle. It has so far raised nearly £650 in under 20 hours. Ms Spriggs said the animals were "very lucky" not have been physically harmed as CCTV images showed the suspects smashing one of the security cameras before joyriding among them. She said the animals provided therapy for people with disabilities and the centre would continue to run as normal with its regular activities such as alpaca walking and sheep feeding. Humberside Police has appealed for anyone with information to come forward. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-humber-652066751 point
