Nokia, earlier this year, changed its logo to a more modern minimalistic design, after many years of sporting a familiar logo. The brand has recently launched several smartphones, including Nokia C32, Nokia C22, Nokia G22, Nokia C12 and Nokia C12 Pro. Now, Nokia has announced Pure UI, a new user interface for its forthcoming B2B and enterprise products. Notably, the Pure UI will not be available on Nokia smartphones manufactured by HMD Global. The Nokia Pure UI, according to the official website, has a distinct appearance with a sense of ease and minimalist design. The new Nokia Pure UI comes with a new design language. Although it won't be used on any Nokia smartphones, it will be available on all software UI developed or planned to be created in the upcoming future by Nokia. The brand claims that the style is meant to be consistent, versatile, and future-proof, and it has a clean, minimalistic appearance. There are several elements, beginning with layouts and recommendations, that define the whole appearance. The Nokia Pure typeface, which will be utilised throughout the UI, is a key component of the new look. The Pure UI introduced new icons based on different strokes, the width of which can be adjusted to meet the display specifications and functionality of a particular device. Smooth animations are also used when an element must draw the attention of the user. In addition, Nokia has created basic features that developers can use to quickly create consistent-looking screens. A dark mode is also supported in the UI, with components and symbols adapting their styles accordingly. Nokia Pure UI claims to offer robust elements that can be used to develop complex web-based dashboards. The interface is intended to be scaled from small wrist-worn screens to large wall-mounted display panels.1 point

Windows 11 has received another preview build in the Dev channel, and it brings in a number of tweaks and additions, including beefing up a feature that should help your PC use a bit less electricity. That would be Content Adaptive Brightness Control (CABC), which as of preview build 23424, works not just with laptops on battery power, but when they’re plugged in – and indeed with desktop PCs too. What CABC does is intelligently dim (or lighten) certain parts of the screen depending on what content is being displayed, the idea being that it can cut back power usage without hampering the ‘visual experience’. In other words, the tweaking on the dimming front shouldn’t make any noticeable difference to the image you’re looking at on-screen, and it should save you a bit of power (and therefore cash, over time). The feature can be set to be always on, or it can be disabled, or alternatively you can choose to have CABC kick in only if you’re on battery power (on a laptop of course). What else is new for build 23424? There’s a new widget board which is now bigger, so it’s three columns wide (rather than two) and much roomier (assuming the device’s screen has enough real-estate to cope). Along with this, there’s the usual gamut of fixes and minor tweaks, all of which are detailed in the usual blog post(opens in new tab) published with every preview build. Notable pieces of minor tinkering include improving the speed of running searches within the Settings panel, and a change to produce better performance when playing games with a high polling mouse (a super-precise fancy gaming mouse, basically). Who doesn't like April Fools' day, a day each year when we let our inner pranksters out to play harmless jokes on our friends and family? It's also become a day each year when PC hardware vendors can unleash their creativity and announce ridiculous products without repercussion. Over the years, we've seen some unique and hilarious inventions from hardware brands. Sometimes, the announcements are clearly hoaxes, but others are so well done that you may think it's real. So, following the annual tradition, we've compiled a small round-up of the most unusual and interesting April Fool's day hardware announcements. You'll love the Sapphire Top RX 7999 XTT Mega(opens in new tab) if you like overengineered graphics cards. The RDNA 3 graphics card comes out of Sapphire's trunk of unreleased graphics cards. The triple-slot graphics card has a trio of cooling fans and vibrant RGB lighting. While the specifications are a mystery, Sapphire confirmed that it rocks "100GB of GDDR0401" memory and impressive clock speeds. The Sapphire Top RX 7999 XTT Mega is built for future 14K gaming. However, the graphics card is only available today, so don't think twice before pulling out your credit card. Asus has revealed the ROG Ally(opens in new tab), the brand's first gaming handheld console. The device uses an unspecified, custom-made AMD Ryzen APU. It's on Windows and supports different gaming platforms. Equipped with a Full HD display, the ROG Ally flaunts a dual-fan cooling solution to run cool and silent in your hands. The ROG Ally is compatible with Asus' ROG XG Mobile eGPU, which employs a GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop GPU to take your gaming experience to another level. The eGPU allows ROG Ally owners to stream their favorite games on the big screen, similar to the Nintendo Switch. Asus even put up a preorder minisite(opens in new tab) at Best Buy. MSI(opens in new tab) unveiled a unique energy drink that's made for gamers. The drink is sugar-free and elevates gamers' energy levels to great heights. Unfortunately, MSI didn't share what flavors the drink is available in. However, the ad claims that it's cooling and refreshing. If your cat needs a comfortable and relaxing bed, Gigabyte(opens in new tab) has you covered. The manufacturer has launched the Aorus Cat Master, a cat bed that's 280mm wide that sits on top of your PC case. The bed features a flexible mesh design that facilitates airflow toward your favorite companion. The Aorus Cat Master is not only comfy but also looks great, thanks to the integrated RGB lighting on the bed stands. NZXT is better known for PC cases or CPU liquid coolers. So, you know something bizarre was going on when NZXT tweeted(opens in new tab) what appeared to be an AI-generated render of the company's first alleged graphics card. It's a shame it was a joke since consumers could use another competitor in the graphics card market after EVGA's exit. The graphics card doesn't look half bad, sporting a beautiful, all-white exterior to match the company's motherboards. The dual-slot graphics card features a standard cooler with NZXT-branded two cooling fans. The rear I/O cover has a unique design flaunting a vent with a circular pattern, three DisplayPort outputs, and one HDMI port. Meanwhile, be quiet!(opens in new tab) has rolled out a press release (yes, an actual press release) announcing the company's Zero Wings AI fans. The bladeless fans (yes, you read that right) leverage the brand's Controlled Airflow Technology (CAT) design and FANOS AI technology that controls the Zero Wings AI's fan speed and airflow, depending on the environment. Thanks to the bladeless design, Zero Wings AI fans can direct your system's airflow in any direction. For example, if your graphics card is running too hot, the fans send a stream of air toward it. be quiet! claims that the Zero Wings AI's performance is equivalent to a standard 120mm fan spinning at 8,500 RPM. The advantage of the Zero Wings AI is that it emits zero noise. Hey, silence is literally built into be quiet's name, and if it works for Dyson(opens in new tab), why not for PCs? Razer has revealed the Razer Razer(opens in new tab), which the brand touts as the world's first gaming mouse that doubles as a razor for... shaving. Featuring Razer Chroma RGB, the Razer Razer wields 1,337 micro blades to provide a clean shave on even the most delicate skin. The razor shaves at 360 FPS (follicles per second), so gamers can remove the hair from their faces in record-breaking time. Silverstone(opens in new tab) has revealed the company's SST-FLP01-W and SST-FLP01-B cases that pay tribute to the PC cases from the '90s. Although Silverstone defines the case as white, it's more old-fashioned beige. Yes, there's even a Turbo button on the case. The SST-FLP01-W accepts Micro ATX, ATX, and even SSI-CEB motherboards. In addition, there's enough spacing for graphics cards up to 300mm in length, so the SST-FLP01-W should have no problems accepting today's best graphics cards. The SST-FLP01-W's most unique selling point is the two 5.25-inch floppy disk bays, which you don't see on cases anymore. So if you still have the original Doom stored away somewhere, now's the time to replay the iconic title. The SST-FLP01-W also has three 12cm cooling fans and USB Type-C support.1 point

Google’s Bard AI has found itself at the center of controversy again, this time over allegations that the Bing rival was trained using data pulled from OpenAI’s ChatGPT. As you may be aware, ChatGPT is the power behind the throne of Bing AI, and the accusation of nefarious activities behind the scenes comes from a report by The Information(opens in new tab). We’re told that Jacob Devlin, a software engineer at Google – an ex-engineer, we might add, having departed the firm over this affair – claims that Google used ChatGPT data (scraped from the ShareGPT website, apparently) to develop Bard. Devlin notes that he warned Google against doing so, as this clearly went against OpenAI’s terms of service. According to the report, Google ceased using the mentioned data after the warnings from Devlin (who left Google to join OpenAI, we’re informed). Google denies any of this, though. A company spokesperson, Chris Pappas, told The Verge(opens in new tab): “Bard is not trained on any data from ShareGPT or ChatGPT.” Analysis: A denial amid some desperation There we have it, then – a clear denial from Google in no uncertain terms that nothing underhand was going on data-wise with Bard. And to be fair, there’s certainly no evidence that Bard’s answers are remotely like the ones given by ChatGPT. (Devlin had further warned that the alleged data hoovering could mean just that, and it’d be obvious enough what had gone on as a result). We suppose the trouble with this episode is that it very much feels like Google has rushed Bard to release – dropping clangers while doing so – as it was forced to play catchup with Microsoft’s Bing AI. Given that the latter is now successfully pushing search engine adoption to Bing, already at this early stage, all this could make it easy enough for some to believe that Google might be getting a bit desperate with tactics behind the scenes. Whether or not the tale about poached data is true – we’ll take Google’s word that it isn’t – the report still makes an interesting revelation that Google’s Brain AI group is now working with AI firm DeepMind (both of these existing under the Alphabet umbrella, the parent company). DeepMind has seemingly been recruited into the mix to swiftly hone and power up Bard, and it’s notable because the two AI outfits are big rivals and are very much being forced to collaborate on this. This again sketches a picture of a rather desperate scramble to get Bard steadier on its feet, while Microsoft’s Bing AI keeps getting updated with new features at a fair old rate of knots. (Although fresh rumblings about one of the potential next ‘features’ for the Bing chatbot have us very concerned, it has to be said). You may also recall alarm bells being rung on the privacy front when Bard itself made an apparent revelation that it used internal Gmail data for training, again prompting Google to tell us that this is not the case and that the bot got things wrong. Bard getting things wrong, of course, is very much part of a bigger issue.1 point

President Joe Biden’s pick to lead the Federal Aviation Administration is withdrawing his name from nomination due to “an onslaught of unfounded Republican attacks” on the nominee’s service and experience, a White House official told CNN. Phillip Washington’s nomination was first announced by the White House last year, but has faced strong criticism from Republican lawmakers over a number of issues, including Washington’s slim aviation credentials and his potential legal entanglements. The White House respects Washington’s decision to withdraw his name and praised his public service record and qualifications to lead the FAA, the official said. The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation was scheduled to vote on Washington’s nomination on Wednesday, but that vote was postponed. A Republican Senate aide told CNN after the postponed vote that “he was pulled because they don’t have the votes to report him out of committee.” Because Republicans remained unified in their opposition to Washington’s prospective leadership, “his nomination is on life support,” the aide said. The nomination withdrawal was first reported by Reuters. Washington, the current CEO of the Denver International Airport, has held leadership roles at municipal transit organizations, including in Denver and Los Angeles, focused on bus and rail lines. He also led the Biden-Harris transition team for the Department of Transportation. Prior to his work in transportation, Washington served in the military for 24 years. While Washington has worked in transportation-related positions since 2000, he had no experience in the aviation industry prior to joining the Denver airport in 2021 – something that became a major concern among committee members. The White House will work to select a new nominee to lead the FAA, the official said. “Politics must not hold up confirming an Administrator to lead the FAA, and we will move expeditiously to nominate a new candidate for FAA Administrator. We believe the Senate owes it to the American people to swiftly consider and confirm a leader to this key safety agency,” the official said.1 point

Seeing the happy face of my cat, William, at the catflap used to make my heart sink. Usually, a limp body would be protruding from his mouth. Worse still, sometimes the corpse was struggling, resulting in William chasing the luckless mouse or young rat around my kitchen for half an hour or more. For me, this was the dark side of cat ownership. Yet, apparently it was also a sign that I had a cat with an extrovert temperament, with confidence in the safety of his home territory, according to a new study. The findings add to a growing body of evidence that cats have different personality traits, just like humans. The “feline five” personality traits, according to earlier researchers, are neuroticism (insecure, shy and anxious), dominance (bullying and aggressive to other cats), impulsiveness (erratic and reckless behaviour), agreeableness (gentle and friendly towards humans) and extroversion. Extrovert felines are active, clever, very curious and, according to a new Applied Animal Behaviour Science study, serial killers. Cats hunt for enjoyment, even though most domestic cats have plenty of food at home. A hunter cat’s idea of a good day is to go out and kill something. It is this habit of hunting for enjoyment rather than food that infuriates wildlife lovers such as Chris Packham, who has urged the RSPB and RSPCA to speak out about cats attacking garden birds. All my cats have loved to hunt. I love mice and I am sorry cats kill them, but I have never considered it fair to my felines to keep them shut up indoors all their lives, unable to practise the hunting they love. Does this mean they have all been extroverts? Judging by the study’s findings, it would appear so. There was ginger Toby, who was very agreeable, but being cross-eyed, not a successful hunter. Nevertheless, he brought home a rat once that ran up the corner of the wall before, fortunately, falling into a wellington boot that I was holding underneath (wellies are great for capturing rodents). There was fluffy, tabby and white William, who used to sit for days outside my neighbour’s woodpile in order to ambush the occasional weasel. William was gentle and agreeable, but also an extrovert. He roamed far and wide in the neighbouring fields. So, have I just by chance only had extrovert cats? This seemed a bit unlikely to me when I considered Tilly, my adored tortoiseshell. She was definitely shy and anxious (neuroticism), and also very loving and gentle to me (agreeableness). Yet she was a terrific hunter. Admittedly, she never brought her prey into the house – a sign that she did not feel fully confident even at home. Was she then a non-extrovert skilled hunter? I try to follow the science, but I had doubts about this particular link between hunting and feline extroversion. There seemed to be a disconnect between my scientific knowledge and my anecdotal experience. However, the arrival of Mr Spangles in my life recently has put my doubts to rest. Grey, middle-aged Mr Spangles does not do predation. Not at all. He goes out briefly into the garden then hides behind the garden shed, ignoring the pigeons on the wall and the frogs in the tiny pond. When he first arrived, he did not even do hunting play. He shrank back with fear from my attempts to engage his interest with a fishing rod toy. Clearly, Mr Spangles is not an extrovert. He is a neurotic. The trait of neuroticism influences almost all his behaviour. It wipes out any trait of agreeableness, as he nips me frequently. Neuroticism dominates his behaviour, and though I am teaching him to play with a fishing rod toy, I do not think local wildlife have anything to fear from him. He is a cat Chris Packham would be proud of.1 point

Vladimir Putin says Russia has not “created a military alliance with China and does not threaten any countries." The comment follows Chinese President Xi Jinping’s three-day state visit to Moscow last week, which was closely watched for signs China might step up support for Russia. The US administration maintains China has been providing “non-lethal” assistance to Russia through its companies. Speaking during a TV interview Putin also accused the West of “starting to build a new axis similar to the one built by fascist Germany and militaristic Japan.” Some background: Xi visited Putin for the first time since the invasion of Ukraine, a trip which Beijing cast as a "journey of peace." But the visit came just days after the International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Putin on account of war crimes, which US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said showed China's intent to provide "diplomatic cover" for alleged Russian atrocities in Ukraine. China has claimed neutrality in the conflict, seeking to portray itself as a peacemaker. At the same time is has backed Kremlin rhetoric blaming NATO for the war and refused to condemn the invasion.1 point
